Leon awoke warm and refreshed, wrapped tightly in his blanket. His head felt much clearer now, able to take on the new day. He yawned and stretched his arms, opening his eyes and discovering Ayshe was gone. He judged from the amount of light streaming in that the morning had left hours ago.

"Shit..." he said, coughing a bit. He'd missed breakfast, and Kathryn, probably. Rayne's examination was probably already done, and, true to form, the results could probably be summed up as, "Uh, we don't know shit."

He got up and walked over to the window, unable to disregard Ayshe's sleeping place as he walked by it. He found it remarkable that, despite everything that had happened, despite the amazing circumstances surrounding impossible physical metamorphoses, despite the endangerment all of them had been through, his mind could only concentrate on one trivial thing.

He now had a very large sum of money, and Sanctuary was full of bars.

He giggled maliciously for a moment, imagining the vicious hangovers that were yet to come. He went out into the hallway and walked upstairs, figuring it was possible Kathryn had come back to her room. He knocked a few times but got no answer. He was about to go back downstairs when he heard a barely audible crack followed by a thump coming from above.

He listened for a moment as the cracks continued. It definitely wasn't a fight, the time between shots was too regulated. Furrowing his brow, he walked up the stairwell, one hand ready to draw a weapon. The cracks became more distinct as he got closer, sounding more like sparks than anything.

He stopped as he saw the door to the room in question, realizing what was going on. A smile crept across his face.

Rayne's room was up here, and he'd had an examination today.

He turned to go back downstairs, but stopped when he realized Rayne might know where Kathryn is. He went to turn the handle, but halted, then knocked on the door.

"Uh, Rayne? It's Leon."

There was no reply. He knocked again, thinking maybe he'd first tried mid-crack, but there was still nothing.

"Shit...uh...I'm coming in. Okay?"

Much to his amazement, he'd walked into a completely empty room.

Silence had suddenly descended upon the small room, an eerie, viscous silence that permeated the cramped walls of the day lit apartment. Gradually, almost so not to disturbed the blanket of motionless air, Leon crept into the living quarters, the stench of ozone shooting through his nostrils like a spike driven deep into his sinuses. Several light orbs hung in the deathly still air outside the lone bedroom, throbbing dully as their infused power slowly depleted. However, as the armed racconan peered around the corner of the door frame a definite sigh relief escaped him as his eyes fell upon the young kit standing like a statue in the middle of the small room, quite unharmed, and yet assuming the most unusual pose. Intrigued, Leon decided to observe just what the child had been up too, remaining quite mute as he watched from his partly obscured vantage point.

The boy's eyes narrowed on his adversary, limbs stretched and frozen in his battle pose, the mental war between the two foes strengthening as the hatred boiled between them. Suddenly, without warning, the kit spun his arms back in a smooth ark, grabbing a hat that was tucked into his belt and brining it to his head within the same streamlined movement. Then, with a quick jerk of his foot, he kicked up a rood that had been resting on the floor beside him, just catching it between his finger and bringing it to bear like a child might hold a wizards staff , assuming a second, rather more cocky pose as he blew off a small crack of sparks from his fingers.
"Dark-Mage Rayne enters the fray! Its down time Sephroth!"
Leon cocked his head in total bemusment as the as Rayne began to spin the shaft in his right paw, making 'whoosh'-ing noises as thought trying to make up for lack of professional sound effects. What was this? Some kind of bazaar human ritual?
The 'sound effects' became ever more vigorous with every twirl of the rod, the kit apparently fully amerced in his persut. Then, suddenly, the child the staff backward, bellowing a loud war cry as he slammed his left hand forward.
"SPARKLER-GA!"
A rushing melee of sparks and popping lighting bolts shot forth from the young boy's fingertips, striking his target with all the accuracy of an egg thrown over a wall, the tiny bucking embers bouncing off the floor and nearby walls with almost as much frequency as they did the on the intended target. After a second or so, Rayne cut the flow and discreetly tugged on a string that ran by his foot. The block removed, the black and charred hat stand toppled sideways and clattered across the floor, defeated for the ninth time on what was turning out to be a very uneven field of battle.
The kit whooped, dancing around a little and swinging the wizards hat in the air "HAHA! Teach ya' to try an' drop a meteor on my planet, Sephroth!"
It was amazing how giddy one could get over such a seemingly pointless victory, yet here in lay the novelty and innocence of child hood. In fact, Rayne so caught up in his playful exploits that he hadn't even noticed the audience that were now watching him.
A genteel cough from Leon nearly made the unsuspecting kit leap out of his skin, letting out a surprised 'meep!' as he spun around, turning so quickly that it could have burned a hole in the rug. Dispite the fact his ears remained in a realitivly upright position, they did flush an increadably deep crimson, his entire posture turning to putty with sour flavored embarrassment as he realised just who it was.
" … Eheh… how, errr long have you been like, standing there?"

"Oh, not long," Leon said, smirking slightly at the hat on the floor. "I wouldn't want to interrupt the final battle or anything." Rayne blushed even more vehemently.

"But that's fine," he said quickly, hoping to alleviate some of the embarrassment. "I did the same thing; hell, I still do.... I mean, you were thrust from one world, which may have sucked, to another one, which does suck. No surprise you'd want to make your own."

Rayne almost smiled at the irony behind the origins of his fantasy.

"Anyway," he said, seeing the kit was clearly uncomfortable, "I was just curious if you knew where Kath was. I...sort of need to talk to her."

"Oh…" the kit mumbled quietly, fiddling awkwardly with the hat in his hands "She went out to the market this morning after my examination. Not sure how long ago that was."
Attention wandering slightly, Rayne suddenly became once again aware of the mess the room was in. Furniture upturned, a bed sheet he'd used as a cape tossed to one side along with most of the cussions from the bevy-nest and various 'non-fragile' ornaments scattered around the floor, bearing the black scars from his 'target practice'. The dozen or so glowing orbs still floating randomly around the room wern't helping its tornado-struck appearance either, and while thankfuly nothing was broken, the kit sudenly became weary that he realy should have restrained himself a little more.
"Errr, I was gona clear up, I swear. I didn' think anyone would be back so soon." The kit stammered, moving to gather up the scattered cushions "So.. where did you go? You weren't at breakfast?"

"Ah, well...I had a rough night, so I slept in a bit." He moved his hand disinterestedly through one of the glowing orbs, feeling a slight pang of regret and frustration. Granted, he was always surrounded by lux, especially in Sanctuary, but the irony of the situation made it eternally worse. His trademark smirk forced its way onto his face, ensuring everyone but Rayne and himself that he was fine.

"And by a bit, of course I mean through all of the morning." He sighed, craning his neck upward. "There's no way I'd find Kath in the marketplace without a fucking army..."

"So how was your examination?" he asked, hoping to somehow break the ice between them.

"It was…Different." The boy muttered, keeping his focus on the cushions as he dumped one load in the Bevi and began to gather another "Still kinda' depressing though, just backed up everything I already know. I'm a runt, went though some bad stuff before I can remember and I apparently suck at magic." The kit smirked a little at the last one, standing up a little and holding out his palm to make another small orb appear above its surface "Though frankly I don't see that it makes much difference. It's still totaly awsome."

"It has its perks," Leon said, "but I guess humans see it differently. Well, humans from another dimension...who have been changed to rac'conans...who have amnesia..."

"Holy shit," he said, smiling, "We're in a bad novel."

The kit chuckled slightly "Yeah, or a realy bad B-movie. All we need now is a spooky old house and a Duse Ex Machina or two and we'd have an oscar for sure!"

"B-movie?" he said. "Ah, nevermind. One of these days, though, you're gonna have to tell me all about where you come from. After all, I'm a bona fide protector guardian guy now. All very official. Strictly confidential." He was suddenly inspired.

"Hey, Rayne, what did you used to do for fun?"

"Not much…" The kit muttered, now absentmindedly hugging the pillow he'd picked up and adjusting the hat a little "I didn' have a lot of friends, so apart from watching documentorys on TV I didn't really do much else. Spent a lotta' time in the library when I was at school, an' I suck at team sports, powerkiting the only one I'm any good at." He muttered, mentaly noting the scar on his leg as he tried to think of something a little less nerdish to say.

"Well, we don't call them by that name, but who knows?" he said, sitting down on the floor. It was quite a sight, Rayne standing among his little orbs of play, almost smiling thinking of past memories.

"You look...comfortable," he said. "That is—" he started after seeing Rayne's confused look, "—you don't look so much like the body your using is new. You're...adapting, so to speak. You may make one hell of a rac'conan yet."

"…I am?"
It was as though someone had sneaked up from behind and tipped a bucket of ice cold water over his head. The kit grew very silent, almost seeming to withdraw back into his shell temporarily, tensing up his shoulders slightly and looking down at the floor emptily as this news swept a cold shiver down through his body. So he was loosing it, it wasn't just his imagination or paranoia. That last shred of his identity which he'd been clinging to and the only thing separated him from the thing he had become was sliding away from his grasp. He'd let his guard down only for a moment, but that was all it had taken for him to slip further into this stereotype, this 'new person', and he'd frolicked for hours without even noticing It felt as though he'd simply abandoned the lines for those few hours, lost control, had he really been 'acting' like a racconan child?
His humanity was slowly being eroded, thread by thread, dozens at a time braking whenever he lost control or forgot to keep the tention, even for a moment. He couldn't allow it. He couldn't loose anymore of who he was lest he simply fade into this 'other thing' that was gradualy taking comand of his life. And yet, the harder he held on, the tighter he made his grip on the past, the more it seemed to slip though his fingers.

The kit gave a shivering breath, suddenly feeling immense knot of fear welling up within him, twisting its way to the surface before falling back to a more manageable depth as he hugged the pillow a little closer. He glanced at Leon for a second before returning his eyes to the floor, partly ashamed, partly wondering.

"I don't think I really want to be Rac'conan..."

A small, forced smile twitched at the corner of his mouth as he replied, the genre mimicking the rogues like for like, both knowing the meaning in social and personal context.

During a pause in the conversation, Jaksun cleared his throat.

"Oops," Kyvan said, "Looks like I should be getting back to work."

Kyvan and Jaksun stood up and the later left several beads on the table, enough to cover his and Kyvan's meals plus tip.

"You're welcome to come along, Ayshe," Kyvan said, "Unless you wanted to take the others to your family's shop?"

Like a child being scolded by his father, Leon felt at once a great humbleness and guilt, drilling duly into his heart at the sight of the troubled child before him. He couldn't help but wonder how one so small could affect him so wholly and completely in only a moment of contempt.

The smile faded.

Silence pervaded the area for what seemed like an eternity. He tried twice to say something...say anything. His mouth was dry and unresponsive, as though it was finally sick of all the filth traveling through it. It finally felt all so trivial, as if his entire journey paled in comparison to the few days Rayne had been in their world.

I'm so...selfish.

"You know what?" he said, casting a cursory glance at one of the floating orbs. "Me neither."

The kit looked up with a sullen expression, a smile quivering at the edge of his lips as though he was slightly amused by Leon's response. Truth be told, he wasn't sure whether the tailless rac' was serious, or just being agreeable, and he couldn't really see Leon being either of those things.
"So, what's your excuse?" he asked innocently, waddling over to gather up the blanket.

"Well, my experiences being a rac'conan haven't been exemplary," he said, "as I'm sure you understand. It's like this..." He got up and began placing some of the cushions back where they belonged.

"Say you're on a luftship, or whatever your world's equivalent is, assuming you can fly. If that luftship crashes, but you survive, you'd probably develop a fear of luftships. This is natural," he said, attempting to brush off some of the black markings on one of the unlucky cushions. "But more than that, you'd try to find alternatives to flying. However, these will never be as efficient as flying itself; at least until we develop the technology that will allow us to phase out flying permanently.

"So, while I love my rac'conan body—my handsome face, my generally clean fur, my striking good looks, of course—god damn it, even my tailless ass—I wouldn't mind a change."

He reached down and picked up the bed sheet which served as Rayne's cape.

"It appears you feel the same way."

Rayne scratched the side of his head, not really sure what Leon was trying to say but getting the general gist of the metaphor.
"I guess so," he mumbled "Though we have Plane's instead of Luftship's. And a plane crash isn't something you walk away from."

He couldn't help but grin at that.

"Maybe I'll be dead before this is all over, then."

The room was, by now, relatively clean, save a few burn marks here and there. Leon wondered for a moment if Rayne felt awkward at his presence, and was then surprised by the realization that he would care if he was. He wanted to get Rayne out of the building; he wanted to let Rayne experience Sanctuary without being yanked around like some animal on a leash.

"Can you leave? This building, I mean. I don't know how the beauro-craps are dealing with that..."

"Oh, I'm not aloud to leave the collage," the kit said awkwardly, lifting a stool to its upright position "The guard said it's not safe, and he's following me to make sure I don't go outside too --not that I mind." He added quickly, afraid that the Rouge might try to do something about it "besides, it sounds like every reporter in the city will be scrabbeling after me, and I've always got magic to keep me occupied in the meentime."

"Fair enough, though you honestly don't look much different from any other kit. I can't imagine the media would recognize unless you were with a big guard, which is exactly why you'd want to leave now in the first place.

"Doesn't matter, though. Besides, I'm curious exactly what lux you've learned. Anything more than 'sparkler-ga'?"
