Well, THAT kicks the hell out of my theories of Esurio, at least...

Might be the best theory so far (and observe, people, how it fits nicely into my theory on the Dreams vs. Reality)

OK, OK, you might want to edit my theory a bit (mayhap by removing most 'creatures'?) to make it fit, but it does! Colby is simply a very powerful Dreamer - he dreams while awake!

That's a hell of an idea, Piano Boy. Very interesting indeed.

*Ponders those thoughts.*

piano boy (or anyone else for that matter),
in today's panel (69), iris stated that she can pretty much wipe her memory/past at will. would her being an autonomous creature still correlate w/your theory o'everyone (iris included) being a figment o'colby's imagination?

hum. i noticed that too. that certainly puts a new spin on things that (1) she and colby have in essence 'doo-looped' back to the beginning (sorta) and that (2) Iris' wording suggests that she can erase her own memory by her own free will.

gotta hand it to you, Z-man...you certainly have a knack for keeping us guessing!!

I think this story is clearly based on the song "Third Eye" by TOOL. I think Zubby Just might be a TOOLhead. yup.

"Dreaming of that face again,
its bright and blue and shimmering,
grinning wide and comforting me with
its three warm and wild eyes." (well, no one has three eyes...there ARE 3 pairs of eyes (Colby, Iris and Blake)...or if you poked out one of iris' there would be three between her and colby...back to the song...)

"On my back and tumbling down that hole and back again rising upand wiping the webs and the dew from my withered eye. In Out In Out In Out" (Hmmm...the tree is the hole, clearly Colby is trying to see more clearly, open his eye, understand...)

"A child's rhyme stuck in my head. It said that life is but a dream. I've spent so many years in question to find I've known this all along." (Just a theme throughout the story.)

""So good to see you. I've missed you so much. So glad it's over. I've missed you so much. Came out to watch you play. Why are you running?" Shrouding all the ground around me. Is this holy crow above me."
(Colby is reunited with Iris. Crow? the Balloon of course. Iris is encourgaing Colby to let go, come out and play, dont run away.)

"Black as holes within a memory and blue as our new second sun. I stick my hand into his shadow to pull the pieces from the sand. Which I attempt to reassemble to see just who I might have been. I do not recognize the vessel, but the eyes seem so familiar. Like phosphorescent desert buttons singing one familiar song... "So good to see you. I've missed you so much. So glad it's over. I've missed you so much. Came out to watch you play. Why are you running away?" Prying open my third eye." (Here we just go more into the trip with Iris. I dont think we've seen any of this yet.)

"So good to see you once again. I thought that you were hiding. And you thought that I had run away. Chasing the tail of dogma. I opened my eye and there we were." (This is where we see Colby's conflict with religion. Blake has been had and has no will. This is why we see biblical references. The Dude with horns is "the man" or society. He has overwhelmed blake, and now Colby's best friend is gonna chop down his tree. Colby is by himself.)

"So good to see you once again I thought that you were hiding from me. And you thought that I had run away. Chasing a trail of smoke and reason. Prying open my third eye." (Here is more of Colby running away. Colby wants answers, he needs justification, he asks "why?")

So, you see it fits well. I think that perhaps Iris is Colby's anima. The whole telephone thing is Colby's subconcious trying to reach him. I think maybe Colby's parents are out of town and Colby has taken the opportuntity to trip out on some psychotropic treats, and is trying to understand himself and develop his spirituality. Blake is obviously the narrow minded narc who is easily swayed by outside forces. He's gonna rat Colby out, I would guess. So whats up with the comet or whtever that Iris came in on? Well...think about it. Colby just got back from the city. He probably picked up some goodies there and decided to trip out in the woods. So Colby is on a lil psychadelic spiritual quest with his "self."

Hmmmm.... I like the twist that the story has taken, with Colby encountering a strangely-dressed not-quite-Iris, and in the underworld, no less.

The remark about erasing memories rings a bell. In, SF I have encountered this as a defense mechanism for beings undergoing serious life-extension; the idea being that you have to purge your memory (which has not evolved to cope with the life extension you now enjoy) in order to stay sane. See, for instance, Roger Zelazny's "Today We Choose Faces".

Iris and Ensurio may be time-travellers, or even immortals (which is just another form of time travel when you come down to it). The appearance of Ygaddrisil in the living room argues perhaps for the latter?

Regards,
Muttley

well what i can say? that made my day (ooh, i rhymed!)

ok, back to the thread... i'm extremely curious how iris' ability to manipulate/erase her past will be explored and her possible link to esurio.

damn you zubba! damn you *shakes fist*! i can't manage to pull myself away, even if i wanted to (and all the yelling, just pretense).

*just playing around with my theory*

Currently: Iris is a Dreambeing. Colby is a Daydreamer (the most powerful creature ever to exist - it dreams while being awake).

Esurio is indeed serious (but he lacks an S!) and he is, too, a Dreambeing. In fact, maybe he was the keeper of Iris before she escaped through the Barrier? Who knows? I do think it's pretty clear that Iris jhas taken the form of Colby's innocent childish daydreams whilst Esurio (being the Dreambeing of Seriousness) tries to limit her power over the Daydreamer Colby by chopping down the tree and so on. He is indeed the embodiment of "growing up and getting serious".

Or, Jimbo is just trying to make a really nice point about people growing up and losing their childhood dreams... If he is, god bless his soul, for he has succeeded. However, if my earlier thesis is correct, I will probably declare Jim a saint and run around singing stupid songs. And dancing.

...maybe this is just a metaphore about growing up... When you begin to grow up, and becomes old enough to understand that there is no turning back, many children force themselves into playing childish games, not really ready to let go. Hence, the tree and the "underworld" (very Wonderland-esque). You see the grown-up world as a kind of an enemy, who tries to kill your childhood treams (hence Esurio). But sooner or later, you have to face the fact that you DO have to grow up. Therefore, the embodiment of our childhood dreams (Iris) is taking Colby to Esurio, the embodiment of the grown-up world.

In an airship, no less, as a symbol of... er... I dunno. That's not the point.

maybe i'm reading into to it, just a tad too much...

iris states and i quote:
"the last time i remember seeing him, we had an argument. i told him i just wanted to... have roots...b-but usually we get along well."

roots? hmm. what if iris and the tree are tied, two sides o'the same coin or maybe the tree is just another manisfestation o'iris since there seems to be an airship iris, a tree iris, and a floating thru abyss iris...

you guys make coming up w/theories look so easy, no es justo.

Wow. This list got big. I go away for a little while and the whole world hops on board!

And Pippy's back! I guess every forum needs a villain. (although his anagram of Esurio is the best so far, be it lacking in an extra letter 's').

Piano Man, you're a damn genius. Genius I tell you! The whole rotary dial/esurio head connection gave me goosebumbs. Up until now, I just figured he had a Viewmaster slide stuck to his forehead.

And Tar Baby, we all do a dance of joy when we appear in tarry quotations.

gee. *g* don't know what i did to become so popular.....heh.

as for the comic itself, i find Iris' "roots" comment very intriguing. just when i think the Z-man has opened all doors and windows so that potential plotlines - directions they could go in, i mean - are virtually endless, he opens up another trap door somewhere. like the roots comment. and i also hafta comment on her outfit - very nostalgic. is there a time-travel or time-travel-ish type slant to the plot now? not that anybody here knows or that Z-man is going to ruin the surprise by answering my question, but i guess i'm thinking out loud.

though really, at this point, i'm still more intrigued in the part that Blake is playing in all this. i guess b/c i know someone JUST like Blake....even looks kinda like him, though i KNOW he doesn't live in Canada....

bleh. rambling. sorry! *stumbles bedward, having had a long, tumbled and otherwise discombobulated week*

Any predictions on what nefarious business Esurio needs to "attend to" in the kitchen?

I'm afraid.
Of course, I'm the one that isn't JP Sloan or Jim North.

I thought it was obvious... he's heading to the kitchen to make a four course dinner with dessert.

I can't believe you couldn't tell that Esurio was a five-star chef!
