The dragon is dark, scaly, evil, the princess gets EATEN. You've got to love that. All the CGI in the world has never given us a monster as physically imposing as the dragon in that movie.
I'm beating my head against a wall, trying to come with a truly rich and satisfying medieval fantasy adventure film (non-animated), and I'm coming up empty. I love Excalibur, but it's not the same genre, really. Hauer and Pfeiffer rock in Ladyhawk, but it's got that horrible rock soundtrack (and Matthew Broderick).
My favorite fantasy movies are all either modern-era (Big Trouble in Little China) or Terry Gilliam movies--
Which reminds me...I used to play "What if?" with LOTR before it became a reality, and Gilliam was always at the top of my director's wish-list. I LOVE Peter Jackson, but what do you think, fellows?
Could Gilliam have made a better "Rings"?

------------------

Most fantasy movies I've seen are only good because of the nostalgia I have attached to them. As actual "films", they don't hold up very well as far as acting or excitement goes.
That's one of the reasons I'm so pumped about Lord of the Rings (it's out tomorrow!). It sounds like Peter Jackson has really stressed the characters and the acting, even though it has epic battle scenes and fantasic effects. If he pulls it off, that'll be the benchmark.
The ideal is that the actors are playing characters, just like any other movies. That they understand that they're not just walking talking fantasy cliches, but that they're in the role of an individual.
------------------

Alright time to add my 3 or 4 cents to this topic.
Willow. Poor Jim will be shocked but I actually didn't loathe this movie all that much. The two little guys were amusing at times. It's not something I'll watch again. I thought the fight scene at the end was amusing BECAUSE it was two old biddies going at it. It would have been better of course if willow hadn't intervened at the end and simply gotten killed off or something but *shrug*.
Dark crystal: I hate. Hate. Hated. This movie. I thought it sucked personally and being subjected to it over and over again was tantamount to having all my teeth removed by being repeatedly rammed in the face with a very hot poker while aliens looked on and laughed their chittery laugh. *twitch twitch*.
Labyrinth was ok. I like the muppets. Thought some of them were neat, then again I was also a huge muppets fan back in the day. Yo yo
Sarah should of just cut her losses and enjoyed the goblin land w/o worrying about her little brother. Let the foofy goblin king have him and just have horrible hysterics when the parents get home. Start screaming incoherently about the monster that grabbed him, get sedated spend a couple of months being anaylzed and then let go. Sure it'll create a small rift in family dynamics but so what. She was already getting the short end of the stick anyways. In a couple of years she'll have grown old enough to leave and strike out in the world.
DnD Movie: *shakes head* I have not personally seen it but I also don't have to wade into dog shit to know I'm not going to enjoy the results of said wading.
Legend: I liked legend. Course I was also pretty damn young when I saw it. Anyways It was cute and amusing. I distinctly remember this part in the movie I think they edited out later for tv airing, not sure, where the goblins where looking for the girl and she was hiding somewhere (I think it was in a house) and the goblin female(?!) said "may be pretty, may be sweet, ain't half as nice as rotting meat" That was the wickedest line in the entire freaking movie. I suppose I was a bit of a morbid child.
[This message has been edited by Chickstyle (edited 12-18-2001).]
[This message has been edited by Chickstyle (edited 12-18-2001).]

well. i came, saw, and goddamn! it was like finally meeting the characters i have grown up reading about. i know everything that happens, by heart, and yet i still was gripping my poor boyfriend's hand, and then the armrest when he took his abused appendage away from me... and yes, i cried.
they are kidding when they say the next movie doesn't come out until next year, right? sigh...i don't want to wait.
all through highschool my friends and i used to cast that movie, and no one that i would have cast is in it, yet, i don't know if they could have done a better job. there is another showing in two hours... i think i might just be there
take care all... and go see the bloody movie
------------------

Amazing..My wife and I sat stunned, with about 500 other people, at how beautiful this movie was. I am at a loss for words. Nothing compares to this, ever. I can't wait to see it again, and again, and again.
Freakest part:
Bilbo's face when he grabs at the ring from Frodo.
Balrog: Frickin' Nasty!
Peter Jackson has been one of my favorite directors since I saw Bad Taste, Meet the Feebles, and Heavenly Creatures for the first time. Dead Alive proved he could do monsters. The Frightners proved he could do action. TLOTR proves that he can do anything.
------------------

I had a blast watching Fellowship of the Ring today.
Great acting, incredible set and costume design... kick ass special effects. Overall I was stunned at the scope and delivery of this movie. It easily crushes all previous fantasy movies underfoot.
It's not a perfect film, but it is very fulfilling and tells the story well.
I wish the action scenes weren't edited so damn fast. I wanted to see the combat more clearly instead of the richoting camera cuts that ensued. When they did show the action clearly, it was incredible. (Best action scene: Legolas point blank shooting the Urak-Hai with his bow, a whole bunch of them in rapid succession).
The slow scenes though, were totally breathtaking. I think I said "Holy Shit" under my breath a few dozen times at the incredible scenery and breadth of Middle Earth up there on the screen.
Great acting. Emotional and fulfilling. Aragorn, Frodo, Samwise and Gandalf in particular.
Kick ass sound. Booming bass and a full range of effects that nailed me to my seat.
Deserves multiple viewings. Not sure when I'll be able to go next, but hopefully before the holidays are over. Jimbo is a very very happy movie go-er
------------------

Surely none can stand up to our midget/hydra alliance. Although I am willing to extend an olive branch to all those who will accept that Fellowship of the Ring is one serious kick-ass movie!!
I'm sure even the most die-hard purists would be willing to accept the few changes they made.
I will dare to post one criticism however, and maybe it has to do with the theatre I was in; did anyone else find it hard to hear what the characters were saying half the time?
Other than that, I'm trying to figure out when I'm going to be able to see it next...

Okay, when opinions are being flung around I can't leave mine quiet.
13th Warrior: Better than expected and Banderas actually attempts to act somewhat. The realism of the sets and the clothing was stunning. The action was grand. A worthwhile fantasy film.
Legend: Better in memory than it was on video. The line mentioned above is still on the video release. I know because I remember it. The only good things about the movie were the demon (yay Tim Curry!) and the girl when she was in the black dress.
Willow: Again, better in memory than in viewing. I liked it when I was 'young' but am not so thrilled with it now. The Brownies were my favorite part of the film. The sorceress duel was appropriate, although I'll never forgive Rizell for forgetting about the wall of spikes a mere minute or less after Bavmorda just about skewered her own daughter on them. She had Bavmorda spinning in the air, bouncing off wall and ceiling, and never once thought to simply impale her on the wall of spikes? WFT? Also, the double headed dragon was ugly, stupid, and about as terrifying as a partially disected worm. Sorcha was hot, but then I've got a thing for warrior women.
Labrynth: My wife's favorite movie from her youth and one I don't mind sitting through. I thought the muppets were perfect for it and really, it couldn't have been done any other way. Did anybody else notice the parallel between the Goblin king and every young girl's fantasy boyfriend? All looks and lines, claiming to be moving heaven and earth for the girl while in fact just using her to her own ends? Ah well, I think too much. Jennifer Connelly was/is very attractive. Too bad they strapped down her chest for the role. Yes, I'm that shallow.
DnD Movie: This is a fantastic film... for riffing. If you watch the movie in order to watch a movie, it's painful. If you get a bunch of friends together with a few drinks and sit down specifically to MST3K it, it rocks. There's so much material to use. Play "spot the Dwarf" and watch for him to fall in and out of plot holes. Make fun of Jeremy Iron's over acting. ( personally I find if you make "ack ack ack!" noises, a la the Martians from Mars Attacks, it ads a whole new dimension to his role ) Believe it or not, I'm buying this DVD. Purely for the drunk party potential.
Dark Crystal: Could have been better, could have been worse. I was in my young teens when it came out, barely out of childhood, and those damned bug gards creeped me out. Giant ticks will do that to me.
Dragonheart: a couple of good lines, a good animated Dragon, but that's aobut it.
Conan: a funny, funny film.

------------------

'k,
now I've got to say something
soundtrack aside (and ignoring a bit of ending), Ladyhawke was a decent movie
I actually like Labyrinth (admittedly not the *best* movie I've ever seen, but I have some sort of nastalga thing going on and it did freak me out as a kid.....then again I [gulp]....liked....[cough...incoherent mumble...a bit more distinctly] the Never-ending Story (complete with poor acting...I know...I know)
if tongue-in-cheek fantasy counts, the Princess Bride was really good
anyhow, I hope the Lord of the Rings is not a complete butchery of the book, but I'm ready to see it when I get of work armed with my ticket and some slightly damaged optomisim
and now "the time has come" (the walrus said)
bring forth the hobbits

I was floored by pretty much everything But... the Balrog was especially well done, IMO.
I gotta go back and read the book again. It's been about 10 years since I read it, and I never did finish the trilogy. I finally broke down and bought the trilogy, the Hobbit, and the Simarillion. Still looking for the Book of Lost Tales to round everything off.
------------------

Stand out parts for me:
- Legolas blasting the baddies at near point blank with his bow.
- The bass shuddering boom as the tiny ring hits the floor of Bilbo's home.
- The ring wraiths! The ring wraiths!
- Arwen's spell at the river.
- Kick ass landscapes...if this movie doesn't win an Oscar for set design, it's a damn shame.
------------------

I saw it twice on opening day. Despite the gripes of some rabid Tolkienites, I honestly don't think, as a fan of his books for over twenty years, that I could have asked for a more satisfying interpretation of Tolkien's work. I *like* what they did with Arwen, for example, and while I've always wondered exactly who Tom Bombadil is, his part is not necessary to the story as a whole.
There've been some complaints about the extensive fight scenes, too. Well, two paragraph descriptions for a single plant do not interesting cinema make. Would you rather spend five minutes of the movie finding the Athelas plant, or fighting the Balrog? It's a no brainer.
I am a little annoyed that Sean Bean didn't get a Golden Globe nomination for Supporting Actor, though. As good as Gandalf was, I think Boromir was even better.
One final note: The new LotR board game? Quite cool, but very, VERY hard.

Ehrm.
I have seen LotR. Twice. Fell asleep the first time (hadn't slept in 48 hours - multiplayer Shogo might do that)
I must say that while much of the movie was exacly as I wanted it, much, on the other hand, was not.
Points:
MY Saruman is more like Sean Connery. Didn't like this dude at all.
MY Samwise Gamgi is not as chubby.
MY Sauron does NOT look like he was designed by some evil-wannabe fantasy-freak. I mean, come ON! He wasn't impressive at ALL, and he's supposed to be, unless I've missed something the last 6-7 times I've read the books.
I DID like the fiery demon in the mines of Moria. THAT was awesome.
And, you know what? I was a bit disppointed in the abscence of that guy who sings in the woods. I have only read the books in swedish (since I live, indeed, in Sweden) so I don't know his real name... But I missed him. He was edited out.
And I'm pretty sure Arwen wasn't the elf rescuing Frodo.
That's all I have to say in the matter. Didn't hate it, didn't insenely loved it, but LIKED it.
