Irrelevant curiosity

Post by Clem »

I just wondered whether people on this forum have seen all of the acts quoted in this storyline. If I got them all they are:

Lords of Acid
Chuck Berry
Foreigner
Bill Haley and the Comets
Dead Kennedys (Maria's jacket logo)
Don McLean
Aaron Neville (I'm guessing on the version of Earth Angel)
Bob Seger
Muddy Waters

I have seen Chuck Berry, Bob Seger and Muddy Waters. I tried to see the Dead kennedys but fate intervened. Seger, at the time, was basically a locally popular bar band. I saw him as the pre-opening act of a triple bill at a skating rink. The actual opening act was a too doped up to sing, frequently sticking his head in a tub of ice water to stay conscious, Iggy Pop (and the Stooges). The headliner was a local one hit wonder enjoying his Warholian fifteen minutes. After the show, I picked up a hitchhiker from the concert. He was wearing a cape and a motorcycle helmet. The first thing he said when he got in the car was "I'm the son of Satan. I can turn invisible." Sounds sort of like a Strange Daze moment.

If it was a Strange Daze moment, then you'd have been driving down the freeway at 85mph a half hour later when the smell of fresh brimstone reached your nostrils, and when you looked to your right you'd have seen an apparently empty passenger's seat.

GAH! I just found out Flogging Molly was in El Paso last night! All it would have cost me is a $12 ticket to hear one of my favorite bands! ARGH!!!

*sigh* Anyway, I've never actually been to a concert or heard a band live. In the few instances a band I like shows up anywhere near where I live, I have generally always been too busy or too late to get a ticket. Also never been told by someone that they are the son of Satan; I have had an individual tell me about how the world was going to end in 2000 due to thermo-nuclear warheads deploying in response to the Y2k bug.

Before, or AFTER, 2000?

Before. It was a nice day, I had an hour before my next class and no major assignments that I needed to work on, so I decided to kick back and just enjoy the sun for a while. The guy came up to me, said "You look worried," and launched into a rather rambling explanation about Y2k, Russian Nukes, Nostradamus, etc. Fairly generic, standard millenialistic apocrypha, basically. I thanked him and went back to enjoying the day.

That's a cool word, apocrypha, and used correctly. I only had a vague meaning in my head so I had to look it up. I'll have to remember it, I know some people I could use it against.
I also wonder what that guy told himself after the disasters didn't happen. I know I was worried that stuff would stop working properly, stuff like factory control software/firmware. But this guy seemed like he was fairly sure it would happen. Many people like this (in my fairly limited experience) seem to just latch onto the next phantom issue instead of figuring out where they went wrong, so they do not sound so foolish.
I hate it when you find out about a concert the day after it happened. I don't normally like going to concerts, but there are a few I'd like to see. I remember finding out about a Susan Aglukark concert the day it was to happen, and I was at work, I had to hustle to get off in time to try and get across town. Good thing I was alone, paired seats were long gone by the time I got there. Then there was the BNL concert I found out about many months in advance, then forgot about  , I would have missed it entirely, but my family got me tickets for Christmas, that was a cool gift.

Apocrypha is a word I'm fairly comfortable with, given that a whole lot of the Strange Daze universe is based on various Apocryphal writings and beliefs. For instance, Kali/Narrator as the supreme being is based on Gnostic beliefs regarding the Demiurge (or the God of the Earth) a sort of false god who rules over the earthly realm. I don't know if I've mentioned it, but in this world part of the reason for the Rebellion against God was due to Angels/Devils falling in love with mortals, and being punished for it. This was also a fairly widely held belief at one point in time. Also, Thera is actually Nephilim; half-human, half-angel. This is part of the reason why other angels aren't entirely comfortable around her, for her fairly large size, and why she isn't able to manifest wings.
