I guess I don't spend enough time on the
Keenspace-specific forums to know what the
rules are for participation in these extra-
comicular events, because by the time I hear
about them it's too late for me to get in on
them! (Except the KeenCon at SDCC this year,
which I will be attending!) But if they do
have a Bikeeni Summer event this year, I'll
try to get in on it.

I didn't think I quite warranted a ticker tape
parade! But I am honored that you think I do.
Yes, I'll be at the San Diego Con on Friday.

How can anyone get enough time and money together to travel hundreds, or thousands of miles to an unfamiliar city where the streets don't go where the map says, to find a Con??
I work full-time, and make a reasonable income, but anything outside of my own state is completely out of the question - I was doing well to drop in at Conifur last year for a few hours.
What's the secret?

Going to the Con has to be a Very Important thing to you. Hmmm... Well, I'm new to all of this. Maybe I'll be able to attend more than one afternoon of a Con this year, and find out what all is going on.

Comic books aren't my thing; I frankly find most of them absolutely silly (with a few, such as Bone, SCUD, JTHM, and the like being the exceptions that prove the rule). Online comics ARE, but those cartoonists will probably be in rather short supply, on the whole. I'll be pimping my comic, but right now I'm not even bothering to produce it because I just can't manage to find the motivation (no one else cares, why should I?).
So why bother? Why the expense and the effort? Well, it's mostly symbolic. The fact of the matter is, the majority of the financing is coming from my parents as a graduation present. So A) it's a celebration of never setting foot in that little piece of hell on earth affectionately known as high school. And I'll be on my own. Utterly. No authority figures, beyond the objective ones employed by the local government, for thousands of miles. B) I'll finally be doing something alone, I mean really-truly-on-my-own. As an added bonus, I've never been off the east coast, so that sweetens the pot.
There was a C), but that involved meeting people I very rarely speak to anymore, so, well, whaddayagonna do.
