Any life here?
I let my forum lapse into deaditude over the holidays, which was my own fault.

Ah!
Read your "lousy" bio update, and about that rant:
When you can't find the difference between quality and crap, what would you go for? The most visible, the easiest available.
And with that market in mind, what would give the most revenue but mass-produced crap? The most income for the least expenses, marketing is where you get your money from..
Have been that kind of a reader myself, knowledge of what you really like and how to get there is the only help you can get.
And.. the mass-market authors don't need to be lousy artists, far from. But try to crank out a books worth every two months and see where it gets you. That's what you have to do to make a decent income in that sector..

True - that's a bit like the Curse of the Sophomore stint, where an artist makes a followup to an enormously popular breakout item.
Sometimes it's because people glorify the first so much that nothing would compare to it, but usually it's just that the artist put their heart and soul into the first one, and the second it's usually "keep on truckin'..."

Absolutely.
There's no question why mass produced crap gets made. That's what sells. And sadly, that's what a lot of people want.
And yeah, crud can easily be made by otherwise talented and creative people, just working within the system. The fabled sophmore curse is part of that too, for sure.
I don't mean to sound elitist, but this is just how I've grown to feel about things. When I'm in a movie theater and people are laughing and oohing and ahhing over previews for the latest recycled, derivitave romantic comedies, or movies that seem to consist entirely of fast, shiny things exploding, I want to scream. A while ago, I caught an episode of Friends, a show I used to love in high school, and hadn't seen for a long time - and I was just struck by how mediocre and predictable it was. Maybe the old ones were funnier. And don't even ask me about music.
I'm really not one of those people who feels they're too cool to like anything popular, and mass produced entertainment is just the devil. There's been recent stuff that I've loved. When I was younger, I was easily impressed, and I basically thought pop culture was God. But I just feel like over the past few years, my eyes opened and my lame-detector kicked into action full blast. Which is a good thing, because when something is truly good now, I think I can see it and appreciate it.
Wow, this turned into a long rant. I'm sorry.
Also, I'll add a footnote - I'm not trying to relate this to my own comics and stuff, and claim they're great. Nah. But hey, I'm trying, and learning.

Also, I made fun of my roommate and her boyfriend for renting the movie "XXX" (not porn, y'know, the one with Vin Diesel), which did not make me the Popularity Queen of the Living Room.

So, you're growing older. I usually attribute it to having seen a lot, and growing tired of it. Which is a pretty natural thing. There's only so many times you can call someone hanging out of a helicopter "exciting".

No, you're not. And
this isn't a long rant.

Your comics and stuff is quite great by its own terms. It's interesting, for a starter. And quite an inspiration at times.

But there's no use to slip on the topic a well-trodden banana.
Got a whiff of
Dasien. Quite funny, in way. Not too much, but..
this doesnt make any sense

Ha!
And thanks for the nice things said about my comic, dalhar...and you're right, I wasn't too sorry about the long rant. Meh!
I'll admit I haven't really taken a good look at Dasien besides seeing it in the Turbocool banner rotation...I feel pretty bad about how few comics I actually get around to checking out, especially ones in our circle. I really can't make valid comments til I take a good look. But yeah, my only exposure to that one has been the banner with a scantily clad lady, and it's an instant turn off for me when comics use that as the main selling point (says hypocritical Kat, with that nude Dylan and Kristan banner in rotation! But that's different, and I don't know why! Anyway, that one's set for retirement once I make a new batch of banners)
Not that that's a concrete rule of whether things are good - take, say,
Loserz, which I thought I wouldn't like at first because it prominently features a skanky girl with her thong strings constantly showing. But it's well written and stylishly drawn and genuinely funny and well done - too bad it's on hiatus.

You know, you could start a new topic for these non-sequitors!
In fact, I think I'll do that.
