The Flintstone "Family Guy Style"

Seems Fox has tapped Seth McFarlane (creator of Family Guy) to update/remake the Flintstones. Now I know this news is weeks old but once I heard it I quickly pictured Wilma's boobs getting larger for breasts jokes, Dino suddenly learning to speak, and Pebbles cracking wise ass remarks. Don't get me wrong I love Family Guy and American Dad but I just don't think McFarlane should be the one taking on classic cartoons. Maybe it's just me.

Leave the old, good classic cartoons alone. While I'm not a real Flintstones fan, I don't want to see them ripped apart and turned into the same old trash the rest of today's major cartoon series all seem to try to be.

I heard it was just going to be for some kind of special, like the way the Star Wars parodies were. I hope so, anyway. I know that whatever nincompoopery ends up going on won't ACTUALLY take away from my enjoyment of the original, but I would rather it be left alone anyway.

Look, I *hate* The Flinstones, I'm talking have-refused-to-watch-an-episode-since-this-traumatic-week-long-24/7-martahon-in-my-pre-teens hate, but as comic artists surely we of all people should appreciate that it was the first animated sitcom on primetime, so if nothing else it holds historic significance? Just because the pyramids were built with slaves and aren't as big as I hoped doesn't mean I want to see Trump Pyramids built on the ruins.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of Family Guy. It has its moments...but I can't stand most of it. That said, I hate the Flintstones, too, although their cereal and vitamin chews are mighty tasty.

Hey, "insipid" and "historically significant" are not mutually exclusive. Besides, you've got your analogy all wrong; this is much more akin to building a flashy replica of the Great Pyramid of Giza in Las Vegas. In other words, the old Flintstones episodes aren't going to disappear.

I kinda of liked Family Guy when it was new, but it got kind of stale after it was cancelled the first time and came back. American Dad was stupid from day one.

Of course, it's possible Seth might be able to create something different from Family Guy / American Dad which is actually decent, sort of like how Matt Groening created both the Simpsons and Futurama. I'll give him a chance, though my hopes aren't super high.

Family Guy is like junk food. Sometimes I crave it, but it never gives me a deep sense of fulfillment. I can always count on it tasting almost exactly the same as it did before with little margin for quality variation.

American Dad, however, seems from what I've seen to be purely soapboxing using caricatures as vehicles to deliver over-simplified, one-sided political complaints. Like an animated political cartoon, only with less labels and more generous smugness.

Seth MacFarlane does what he does and makes fortunes that I could never dream of, and for that I say good for him. But when I am settling down to watch animated fare that I know I will find pleasing on more than just an id level, I know who I can count on. Matt Groening, and *swoon* Mike Judge

NNOOO! Growing up I liked Dino because he was one the few Hanna-Barbera pets that didn't talk in an annoying voice (Scooby...cough).

Seems that there is a lot of dislike of the Flintstones, I won't argue whether it was great or crap. The reason I started this topic was the full circle of it all which I'm certain will lead to ruin.

True the Flintstones were just a copy of the Honeymooners but their edgy primetime antics (well back then they were; Wilma gave birth, got a job, while Betty dealt with headaches of adoption) was the model for the Simpsons. Which in turn was copied by another animated family, the Griffons. So basically you have the guy who created a copy of the copy now in charge of the original. That doesn't sound right.

Of course, it's possible Seth might be able to create something different from Family Guy / American Dad which is actually decent, sort of like how Matt Groening created both the Simpsons and Futurama. I'll give him a chance, though my hopes aren't super high.

Problem is he already had two chances. And although everyone is quick to say how much American Dad sucks, no one mentions the Cleveland Show. That show is a clear sign that he is unwilling to leave his comfort zone.

I read somewhere there were insanely complicated negotiations with the rights-holders in order to bring it to series, and that it's McFarland, not Fox particularly, that really wants to do this. Time will tell..
