St. Louis is tops for crime this year. I just read about it the other day on Yahoo! News.
Here's a Reuters blurb: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20101122/lf_ ... _stlouis_1

Went to St Louis in May. Not sure it deserves inclusion on this list.
Some real cesspits on there.

Think the mayor actually said that the other day. Though he may have said "murder."

I'm seriously surprised that Gary is so low on that list.

Actually I'm surprised Saint Louis is even on there. Yeah it's got a lot of problems, but compared to Detroit?
so not true! The first place you ever visited in the US was the Newark airport! Which...okay, Newark is pretty awful. Nevermind.Mo wrote:Hahaha, funny how the no. 1 on the list is the ONE place in the US I've been to... ever...

There aren't many major cities that average non-American would know on there. We always think that it's New York, Chicago and Los Angeles that are dangerous. I mean, I've never seen a crime movie set in Camden, New Jersey or Compton, California.

Re: Top 10 Worst Cities In The U.S.
Actually, New York is currently one of the best cities in the US as far as crime rate goes. They've really turned things around. However, the numbers have been manipulated somewhat. Apparently there's a huge scandal with NYPD officers trying to fullfill a 'quota' of minor crimes while ignoring some major ones. Nevertheless, it is loads better than it used to be.
LA is still kind of a hellhole, though.
Chicago...well, it has it's problems but you're not going to get instantly mugged or anything if you go there. It's got some great sights and museums, too. Just stay away from the southside.

St. Louis and Crime
Keep in mind that the outlying suburbs and smaller towns around St. Louis (i.e. where the first few cookouts took place) aren't part of the city's statistical derivations. Long ago, the county divorced itself from the city (or vice versa depending on who you talk to). What you have is a report of the goings on in the city proper only. And, even though they weren't in the city limits, the Kolters have a number of, um, interesting stories about living in University City not far from the St. Louis city limits.MixedMyth wrote:Actually I'm surprised Saint Louis is even on there. Well, top ten ain't bad. Erm, good, I mean. And look at the competition.MixedMyth wrote:I'm seriously surprised that Gary is so low on that list.
You in Chicago much, MM?
Chicago is a great city, McDuffies, but the places that are bad are among the worst in the country. Oakland, Camden, it's just all hell. (Though Gary and Compton are very close to Chicago and Los Angeles, respectively.)
That said, there have been three shootings outside of my L stop in the past week.

Re: Top 10 Worst Cities In The U.S.
I'm having trouble comparing it to the state here. There are certainly parts of Belgrade I wouldn't like to be caught in after dark... then again I tended to walk home half-drunk from all kinds of hellholes, so there's a lot of luck, and stick-to-the-wide-avenues involved.
I tended to think that Belgrade was equally safe at any given time of the day, since some of more shocking crimes happened during daytime, and in rather unexpectedly public places.

oh and Compton was made infamous by N.W.A.'s 'Straight out of Compton' album.
