A Cult of Kistler

Just thought there might be interested parties around here, but I've recently restarted my old drawing club, A Cult of Kistler. Anyone with a few spare minutes every month can feel free to join in! This month's assignment is to draw Space Hamsters!

For anyone who might not know, Mark Kistler is an art educator who has had a few different shows aimed at kids on PBS here in the U.S. I have a feeling that there might be a few people around these parts who have had some bit of influence by him. The best part of his lessons is that he teaches the solid fundamentals of good draftsmanship, while making it as silly and fun as possible.

Again, this is all for fun, so do join in. You can post any results here or to the Doodles thread, if you'd like, and I can post them to the LJ group, with your permission. I might even make a Facebook club outta this, should there be sufficient interest. In the meantime, draw some Space Hamsters, and keep your eyes peeled for a new assignment in a couple of weeks!

So if I understand this right Space Hamsters is the theme for the month of November. Is there a due date for this? Or is it submit within a timely manner?

There's really no due date, because this is about fun, not deadlines. However, I'll be posting a new assignment for the month of December, so I guess the "optimal" time to draw space hamsters would be by the end of November.

HAha yeah I figured that in a Hamster world that would make sense. I should have done the Tie fighters as Hamster wheels, but I got lazy and couldn't get them to look right. As for the ACTUAL Space Hamster that Mark Kistler drew I remember drawing those things on everything I owned! Brings back good memories of watching those videos in fourth grade.

This is such a RAD idea - if I don't do something by the end of the month I'll eagerly await the December theme.

December's challenge! Draw a treasure chest. On Mark Kistler's Youtube channel is a ten-minute lesson on how to draw foreshortened squares on two-point perspective, and then, at around the five-minute mark, he draws a treasure chest. To spice up the treasure chest, add some context. Where is this treasure located? What does the box contain? Have fun, and good drawing.

(I'm in my finals at school right now, so I have to postpone posting my own effort at the hamsters for a few more days, although I'm pretty excited about how it turned out.)

Also, it seems that there are new episodes of the Imagination Station that have started playing on public television as of this fall. Look for it on your local listings, or bug your town's PBS station to add it to the lineup!
