I almost died today

Post by MSPcomix »

I just found out that there was a gas leak in my house. They had to come in and shut it off. I could have died. Most intense shit I've ever been though in my life.

well if thats the most tramatic life experience then, concider yourself lucky! Glad you got that taken care of!

I almost died a few times.

A few years back a semi crashed into the side of the car I was riding in.. straight into my door, if it was carrying a load I would have probably been killed.

I once had my skull bashed with an alluminum baseball bat. My skull bones I suppose are dense as I just had a fracture and had to get some dental work to straighten my teeth as well as they could.

When I was a skater I was doing a ollie off some steps to close to the road and a car clipped me. Good thing it was stopping for a red light... I may have not been killed but it would have really sucked.

I was hit by a car once. Luckily I just had a few scrapes though, even though my bike was totaled. The lady who hit me had a nervous breakdown and was sent to the hospital.

Had someone try to run me over with a car when I was in middle school, guy thought I was the kid from across the street who'd been playing ding dong ditch at his house.

Nailed in the head around middle school age with a baseball thrown at full speed by an adult male. Knocked unconscious, mild concussion.

Car accident in high school, collided with an SUV and had I been in a less solidly built car (1989 Oldsmobile) I'd probably have been seriously injured or killed.

I'm deployed to Iraq, have a few "I think I'm gonna die" situations to include-nearly being run over by my own driver, getting lost near Fallujah and then stopping there for 4 hours, being mortared at Basrah, being mortared my first week in theater, my DUKE antennae breaking in the middle of a convoy, driving anywhere with buildings.

Really makes you appreciate the other days, don't it?

A few years ago I was working in a suburban ice cream shop north of Chicago. A guy came in and threatened me with a knife, so I gave him the money from the register. It was scary but mostly intensely surreal.

When I was a baby my mom took me to get stamps from the post office store. Then a little while later that day- I think within the space of only a few hours- a man went inside with a gun and was holding everyone hostage. My mom had watched the news and apparently the people that were trapped inside were trying to tell people walking up outside of the store not to come in so that they wouldn't get trapped too. He ended up killing all of them and committing suicide.

I mean, I guess that doesn't really count since there was a pretty big time buffer there. But if mom's errands had been organized just a little differently both of us could have been murdered. I obviously wasn't aware at the time and she didn't even tell me about this until like two years ago, but thinking about it now really freaks me out.

Let's see.

I had a semi smash into the back of my car and push me into oncoming traffic. It snapped off the driver's seat and threw it and me into the remains of the back seat. The rig hit the car so hard it bent the frame of the rig and the driver had to get out the passenger door. Got whiplash and bruises from that one.

Got trapped in a fenced in area with a pack of ferral dogs. Had to climb a barb wire fence to avoid being attacked and probably eaten. Was chased down a railroad track until I made it into a building, torn and bleeding.

I was assaulted as a manager of a convienence store. Might have been killed if it weren't for other people in the store.

10 pound glass bulb fell 40 feet and landed two feet behind me. That would have killed me.

I'm sure there are a few other times if I put my mind to it. Gas leak is pretty bad though, it could suffocate you. Really the chances of an explosion are slimmer than you think - the percentage of gas to air has to be just right to ignite. It's clearly possible - just not the guaranteed danger everyone thinks it is.

and now of course I avoid deep water.

My dad had one of those fliers stuck to the fridge with the scratch'n'sniff bits that let you know what natural gas smells like, and what to do if you smell it in your house. Kinda neat - but he works for a major power corporation and has fireman training so he was always making sure we knew about that sort of thing.

As for near-death oopses, when I was eightish or so I nearly got my stupid self drowned following my older brother into the Ottawa River in an attempt to swim to a small island that happened to look like it was close to the shore.
It wasn't, and apparently I was a crappy swimmer. Good thing my brother wasn't.
My mom was beyond pissed and I wasn't allowed to so much as stick my toe into the water for the rest of the summer.

Closest I ever got to dying was nearly being run over by an ambulance and a blow to the head with a solid piece of metal that missed my temple by less than a centimeter.

God I could go on for hours, I was a dangerous kid. My favorite is I was rustling around tall grass. Picture Jurassic Park 2's long grass scene, except a preteen running through it. Couldn't see shit, suddenly I'm all "I have this feeling I should stop running.... NOW.
I stop and look down and I have half a foot off a cliff edge.
Then I chased a balloon across a busy roaaaaad, got whooping cough when I was under one which is apparently baaaad, I feel down a flight of stairs and cracked my skuuuuull... *keeps going*

I must be lucky. I never was in situations where my life was on the line. I was hurt, but nothing life threatening. Kind of like the time I fell head first into a brick wall. That hurt and as a sixth grader it was pretty much okay for me to cry. :P

I fell from a one-legged chair once as a kid, and hit the back of my head on the sharp corner of my kitchen wall, which was made of marble. I had to get stitches. For a moment I told my parents that it didn't really hurt anymore, when I was still bleeding, I think that might've scared the brix out of them.

I almost got run over by a truck once while trying to cross the crosswalk while the pedestrian light was green. Now I only cross that some crosswalk when the pedestrian light is red.

I had the same deal, only with a car filled with old people.
I got up, marveled at my unscathed mp3 player which had fallen to the concrete when they hit me, and kept walking to work.

...shenanigans ensued, old people got a last warning on their license, my mom dragged me to the hospital, and i got about half the night off work. not too bad.

Wait, but if you kept walking, why did "shenanigans ensued" and how come you were dragged to the hospital?

well, it wouldn't cost her anything to find out if there was anything wrong or not ... better safe than sorry

Hm, right, right. So, what about the lady? Did you have to remember her license plate number to go after her?

Now that's what I call luck.

Well if I don't could several times I had to be sewed up and one almost drowning when I was a kid... I barely remember them so it's not like I could relieve traumatic experiences. If I died back then, I wouldn't have even remembered it.

When I was visiting my home back during the war, it was several kilometers from the front line so lost bullets or grenades were not unheard of, every local village psycho was armed and dangerous and there were a lot of armed robbers, so threat was constant, though usually not immediate, more like lingering in the air, you know, constantly covering windows, using only rooms that look away from the street, not leaving the yard unsupervised, not talking to strange men and all that... Most of direct threats fell on my parent's back and they did a lot to shelter us from it.
I also took my high school graduation exams under the bombing, but I never felt like I was in any immediate danger.
I suppose I was sort of lucky when it comes to that. Like, several years ago, due to my father's involvement in politics, his opponent arranged for a bomb to be thrown in our backyard. Noone was hurt, but they were scared a lot, I was away at the time so I heard about it only a few days later. Years earlier than that, my father was attacked by an insane sympathizer by the oposing party at a footbal game, barely escaping. Earlier that evening he offered me to go to a game, but I didn't feel like going. So I guess I have a plenty of luck in not being at the place of the life-threatening situation.

I was about sixteen at the time, was tired out of my head, and since I had nothing worse than a scrape on my elbow I figured I was fine to go back to work.
Some well-meaning old lady saw the whole thing, chased down the other old people, then chased me down at work, got my number, called my mom and scared the hell out of her. So she stormed into my work to kick my ass for letting that woman call her and brought me to the hospital in case I had whiplash or something.

I've always had a sort of "oh, I'll just walk it off" approach to things so my mom knows I wouldn't go to the doctor to get something looked at unless I realized I totally would not be able to function.
Weird overcompensation for being a gigantic crybaby as a child.

Ah! Some lady chased after you. Whoa...

Yea, I have that kind of personality too. I'm not very fond of taking medicine so I usually walk off my colds and such.
