Comic backups?
how many of your lot have backups of your webcomics? and how?
do you upload your comic to multiple hosts? (but CG and drunkduck for example) or do you have a 'spare' copy of all your webcomic pages and files on your computer (after a while thats gonna take up a lot of space)
personally i have all the original files on my computer - in triplicate! the original "done" jpg files not renamed for dates, just numbered (comic1, comic2...), then i got the layered .PSD files if i need to go fix anything in the comic, and then i got the "ready to upload" date-numbered comic jpgs.
thats over 1800 files in my case - not counting the files for the html files i also got copies of.
what've you got? SHOW ME YOUR MOVES!

Re: Comic backups?
I have all of my comics saved on my laptop in case I want to fiddle around with old ones out of boredom and such. I also keep all the templates for the website in case something happens. And technically I have all the hard copies too since it's hand drawn, the only thing would be if i had to scan and upload them again for some reason it would take a fockload of time and I would have to re-edit them all over again.

Re: Comic backups?
My comics are on the USB key I carry with me - they don't take up much space.
But, that key is backed up to my computer at home. In the data directory.
And my data directory is backed up to DVD.
And because I can, I keep a copy of that DVD in our fireproof vault at work.
My comics flow with that data. So they're on USB, Hard Disk, DVD, and stored in two separate locations.

Re: Comic backups?
I keep backups of my comics in their original scan, large scale color (~3000x4000 pixels), and then the finalized smaller color (~800x1000 pixels) backed up via CDs and my laptop.

You really want to back them up on more than just your computer. If something happens to your computer, you're in real trouble. I have mine back up on an external hard drive and on CD.

But do you keep photocopies in the safe place?
I usually keep all original pdf files on computer, and backup them on dvd once in a while.

Mine too! Although, they're currently collected in about fifty hojillion folders strewn all over the place and god knows where they every single last one of them is. I'm pretty sure some of them have been eaten by Cthulhu by now.Bustertheclown wrote:All of my comics are drawn on paper.
The web-optimised images are what I really strive to keep my hands on. I keep them backed up on CDs and a memory stick for they day when my computer eventually gives up the ghost.

I learned this the hard way.MixedMyth wrote:You really want to back them up on more than just your computer. If something happens to your computer, you're in real trouble. I have mine back up on an external hard drive and on CD.
Consequently I only have about half my archive in psd format - and those are all the horrible black-and-white ones that I want to go back and colour. That's all right though, I save every drawn page in a binder (some in a folder when I went through a phase of drawing on gigantic weirdass marker paper for some reason).
Been reading Wizard how-to books again, I want to pick up some bristolboard and start doing comics on that. Only problem is I'll need a bigger scanner. And Pimp has no money

I do also back all my comic-related files on CD now and then. Was very helpful that year when my computer aneurysm'd twice.

Re: Comic backups?
Luckily I got a copy of it on my hard drive. I also got half of it on my old hard drive, and of course, I still have all the paper versions.

Re: Comic backups?
I have a copy of my archives both full-size and web-size on my laptop, and another full set split between my art computer and James's gaming computer, which I used to use for coloring. I keep meaning to back the newer ones up to my flash drive, hopefully before any of the computers die, but if one of them does I will be motivated to back up from the others.
Actually why don't I do that now?
It's done!

Re: Comic backups?
I actually do my good artwork on Bristol board. It's lovely stuff, especially with micron pens. My scanner isn't all that big, but I usually don't use the entire space of the page... I size it down so it can fit. It works out pretty well.
Re: Comic backups?
Ever since losing a lot of work on a game I'd been writing in about grade 12, I keep everything backed up at least 3 different ways.
Re: Comic backups?
I haven't backed up any comic stuff purely because i have nothing else to back them up to yet
But the second i get an external harddrive or something!! THEY WILL BE LOOKED AFTER.
Honestly.. i highly recommend backups

Re: Comic backups?
All materials are on an external 1 tb hdd. Then from there all pics are burned to a cd and all scripts are printed out. If I have to start over as long a I have the pictures and scripts I am fine. I'm aboot to have to start burning to a dvd due to size issues.

I love bristol board it's nice! i won't draw on anything else anymore. i prefer the smooth to vellum. the nice thing is it last a long time. you can pull it out years later and it will still look good. i keep all of the paper copys of my strips as well as a psd copy an ai copy and the jpg on my ibook and on an external hard drive.MixedMyth wrote:I actually do my good artwork on Bristol board. when they invented scanners they didn't have artists in mind. i can't draw that small. i've been trying to to find an 11 x 17 scanner that's affordable. but till then its scan in parts which works ok for black and white

that's about how many files I'd have if I didn't keep backups. But I have the original PSDs and jpegs on the computer as well as back ups of the PSDs on C.D.s.Webkilla wrote: thats over 1800 files in my case - not counting the files for the html files i also got copies of.

Re: Comic backups?
Having gone through TWO harddisk crashes, in which 1st one I lost everything and 2nd I lost a good portion of recent work... I now back up on both a 2.5" portable drive and a big 3.5" 1 TB powered one.

Everything is drawn on paper. If I lose the computer files, I simply rescan the ones I lost.
