An observation, and a question.

This isn't really about comics, so I thought I'd stick this post here.

Since coming back, I've noticed (and come across a few threads discussing) how slow the forums are these days. If this is the elephant in the room, I apologize, but I've been out of the loop a while.

I'm wondering if part of the problem is that we don't seem that...well...friendly. When someone posts a "HI! OMG I'M NEW" thread, it's instantly locked, often without even a post telling the person to head to the intro thread, and then when someone does post in the Intro thread, they generally get no response.

So I guess what I'm asking is whether we should lighten up a bit and let the newbies have their "Hi, my name is:" threads? Being welcomed individually and having a chance to interact with us in a silly, no pressure way is a good way to get to see what we're like...because honestly, in my opinion, right now we look like we're all business and no play.

I know the majority of us have been on this board a long time. We've read the same threads about the same things 10,000 times, but every day new people with limited experience join and want to talk about things. If you joined a new forum, would you want to read through old threads to find an answer to your question, or would you rather have an interactive discussion with others about it? Would you rather introduce yourself in a thread that gets no replies, or be replied to by 20 people? Even if you're only getting their normal answer to a new person, it's still new to the newbie, and makes them feel like someone is actually here, and at least interested in their arrival enough to post.

Anyway, that's my two cents...or three. Not sure what the exchange rate of thoughts to cash is anymore.

Okay now that I'm done that. The reason we decided to create a 'hi we're new thread is two-fold'. First, GD had just turned into a list of 'hi I'm new' threads, and second, they were rarely checked. I know I wouldn't go into a 'hi I'm new' thread and go 'oh hey welcome to CG, have a nice time'. It was easier just to collate them in one place and hope that the new people talked to eachother in the new forums.

Honestly though. We didn't make 'hi we're new' threads when we started, we just slowly integrated ourselves into the forums. I don't see why that's suddenly a problem.

Just my two cents.

I can't speak for anyone but myself. Rather, I choose not to speak for anyone but myself. Personally, I don't feel the connection here like I used to. I don't have a comic anymore, I almost never write anymore, I don't get to indulge in my miniature painting anymore and that was my only connection to being an artist since I never drew. I don't have the passion for comics/art that many of you have, for me I just enjoy reading them because its a great escape from the regularity of life.

As a result, I don't belong in any of the forums but Off Topic. I'm never in jams unless someone puts me there. I don't have a comic to get fanart, I don't have any way of producing fanart. I don't doodle. I'm in the military, deployed to a still hostile region thousands of miles from my home which is itself thousands of miles away from the country I was born in. I'm not super close, we can talk about personal crap, type friends with anyone on this forum. Chat is fucking dead for its own reasons, and I'm rarely in there anyways.

Put all of that together, and I just feel like an outsider 90% of the time. I've been a member of the forums, and a relatively active part of the community for several years now, so what does that say about the forums?

Cliques have formed over the past, solidified and refined, and many of the veterans have there own thing going on. The community is fractured, divided, and really there's no magical easy fix to make it all happy and fun. People come and go, personalities change, lives change, and the community changes. This is just a step, and in this step the group is no longer cohesive. In time, things will change.

Quite frankly? I don't care like I used to.

And part of joining a forum is reading the rules, so I don't feel particularly guilty about locking a thread like that when the proper thread for it is right there at the top of the page. If you didn't need the posts for legitimate reasons, I'd just delete the threads outright :b .

Okay, serious answer. I'm just not as active around here as I used to be. It's nothing to do with CG specifically . . . I've just been rather apathetic concerning most forums in general. Which happens to me from time to time. Y'know. 'Cause I usually only hang out in Off-Topic anymore, I don't generally see people come in via the introductory thread. Though with the advent of McDuffies fuzzling here in OT, that's changing somewhat. No one can resist hanging out at least a little with folks who are into mercilessly fuzzling McD until he just ain't got no fuzz left on him, even if they are newbies.

Yeah, forums are deader than they used to be. Nowadays if I visit once a day, I can hope to see 5-6 threads with new posts on OT, which is nothing. I don't think it's a slump that will pass, 'cause it's been lasting for a few years now.
You could say, for instance, since there are no jams, that we managed to threaten everyone to the point of being afraid to start a jam, and that's probably partly true. But it doesn't explain why a legitimately good idea like thumbnail jam gets unanswered... I think it's just that noone's interested.

I can speak for myself why I'm not in it. I'm simply not putting much effort into forums these days, I'm still around but I can't remember the last time I scanned something to post it here, mostly I'm coming around to kill 15 min or so. A sort of circle of life on forums has been that it's always reliant on college kids, early 20-somethings with more free time to be most active on forums. Eventually people get jobs, kids, bored or whatever, and leave forums, and if you ask them why they don't visit anymore, they reply that they don't have time from real life duties and all. Well I do have the time to visit once or twice a day and even occasionally review the hell out of everyone, but compared to how much time I used to spend, that's not a lot.

Perhaps you have a point, perhaps it's that new generation of freshly enthusiastic college kids hasn't appeared. I'd atribute that partly to the thing that webcomics aren't a new ground nowadays, they're not a great lure for enthusiastic kids who wants self-expression, and people in general take them more seriously.
But if there's a possibility that removing the "Hi I'm new" thread will bring back new crowd, I'm for it. After all, the rule was made when forum was much more active and there were five such threads each day. I mean, I personally am not confident that it would change anything, but if there's a chance, why the hell not - we have nothing to lose, after all we can always reinstate the rule again if things turn ugly.

I think a lot of the Oldbies who have been around a while just aren't really into things like they use to be. Most of us are now out of school and don't have the time to devote, like we use to.

I haven't been here long but I don't get the feeling that allowing people introduction threads would fix what ails the forum, I think the real issue is that new people start a comic, log in, see nothing much going on and continue their comic without thinking much of the forums.

I always found it strange, it seems like there are so many comics hosted and so few people posting...

Also, I don't want it to sound like I was suggesting letting them have threads would fix everything and take the forum back to the level of community it was at 3 years ago. I can see both sides of the coin, though, and can understand why the intro thread was set up originally.

Another possible factor to the slump I thought of: It might also be that more new webcomic artists are just getting their own sites to start out with. It's not like webspace is really very expensive...and let's be honest, I'm not old yet (not 30 until November, damnit!) but the kids graduating high school now are WAY more tech savvy than me, despite my best attempts to stay up with everything. Maybe they're just not as interested in traditional style forums as they are in social media based interaction.

Close. Racy things were said, people were booted by proxy (complaints in redslime brought neko from there to keenspace for the boot) and everyone dispersed shortly thereafter. Not too sure about the abuse of ops being prevalent - this was the one event that effectively divided everyone.

And now that you've read most of the event, you might notice that the community and people within it took themselves way too seriously. The drama and internet politics just aren't worth it, and if you don't like things, find like minded people move on. It's what everyone else did.

Another possible factor to the slump I thought of: It might also be that more new webcomic artists are just getting their own sites to start out with. It's not like webspace is really very expensive...and let's be honest, I'm not old yet (not 30 until November, damnit!) but the kids graduating high school now are WAY more tech savvy than me, despite my best attempts to stay up with everything. Maybe they're just not as interested in traditional style forums as they are in social media based interaction.
