Work Ethic

Post by ArcoJawa »

Wow, it's certainly been awhile since I did anything relevant with Comic Genesis...

Let me explain this really quick: I've had my comic, Black Rhapsody, up on Comic Genesis for a year or so now, and for the past several months I've not been updating the comic since I've been "working" on the animated version. I have quite a bit done (hopefully I'm aloud to do this -heres a scene of the animation: BR Scene 2) but it took me sometime to make it. I've made a resolution to finish the animation before I graduate from college -which is this May. I've always been lazy -just not as lazy as most people- and so while I can produce a lot of stuff rather quickly I tend to do it slowly merely because I don't spend a lot of time working.

So heres the thing; I need to get my work ethic up and finish this before graduation. Any tips would be appreciated.

Everyone works differently and some things work great for others whereas it would destroy others completely. So, I'll list my goals and use whatever you like:

Set lots of small goals placed at reasonably thought through and well placed intervals.
Don't overwork yourself or else you'll burn out and leave the audience with either an unfinished product or a product which isn't done to the best of your abilities.
Once you have a good schedule in place, don't compromise unless it is absolutely necessary for school, work, life... treat the comic like a job (even though its a hobby which I have fun doing).
Follow your schedule once you have a good one; things just flow more easily and naturally out of the creative parts of my mind when I have a routine to follow (even if it is a loose one).
Don't rush or stress out; I just don't put out the same kind of work which I can and know I should be doing and then I get frustrated and that makes me not want to do the comics.

Those things are how I keep my lazy self on track. I just keep reminding myself that once I miss a day, it will be easier to skip another... and another... and then who knows where I'll be. It's not so much about work ethic as it is about determination.

You put more effort in that post than most of your other endeavors.

In my experience, the only way to force a work ethic onto yourself (as opposed to doing "work", be it actual employment or your schoolwork)(and schoolwork should come before anything. not only does it pay off more in the long run, it's alot more fun than actual work) is to devote a portion of your day towards whatever you want to devote it to.

Think about it: No matter who you are, what you do, what you are paid, in the end you only have 24 hours to "spend" in any given day.

Biological functions come first. This includes eating, pooping, fullfilling sexual urges via whatever means appeal to you, and, most importantly of all, SLEEP.

Survival comes next. This includes working the crappy day job.

Invenstment and development comes next. This includes schoolwork, looking for new jobs, etc. If you have a webcomic that you are serious about, you will devote a significant portion of your time to cranking it out.

Social needs: No need to empasize the importance, but if you can't get it at home or work or school, don't look for it online. Go out to a bar once a week or something.

Self-actualzation: If you are not aiming to fullfil this via webcartooning, you are in the wrong forum.

As everyone has already said, different things work for different people. But that isn't much help to you.
For me, I work best when there's someone else around. Which is probably quite abnormal on the face of it. But when there's someone there I actually have to work, if they are a responsible type person that is anyway. When we were still going out, I would go over to my girlfriends to get work done - she'd have work to do as well, so she wouldn't let me distract her. We both got more work done as a result.
