FCBD 2008: Submissions!

Post by Zwuh »

Greets! Having been newly drafted into helping the perpetually swamped Cortland with the ComicGenesis Free Comic Book Day Book, I'm making this thread specifically to bug people about submissions.

Things are a little different this time around, in case you didn't know, so I'll give everyone a basic lowdown:

* Each submission should be five pages long (although it could potentially be less if we can get two worthwhile shorter submissions)
* The overall theme is RUN. Interpret that however you like.
* Unlike previous years, the book will not be a random collection of snippets and advertising space for people's webcomics. Your submission should be a self-contained story (or jokes, if that's your thing) with a beginning, middle and end.
* You can use characters and/or setting from your existing comic if you MUST, but it's somewhat discouraged. Even if you do use existing characters of your own, your submission still has to stand alone. That means no TO BE CONTINUED or FOR MORE, READ MY COMIC.
* Final product will be black n' white/greyscale AFAIK.

Deadline is currently January 24th. After that, the submissions will go to the panel of judges (TBC) and the top 5 will be chosen to go into the book.

Submissions which don't make it into the book will be put up onto a FCBD "page" which will be linked in the pages of the book itself. So if you don't get in, you can still have your work viewed by anyone and everyone once the book is out.

Other technical details will be forthcoming. In the meantime, post here if you are interested in submitting something, so we can get an idea of who is working. Any questions?

I need a project so i will consider this, but Technical information like image size and use of colour is strongly going to influence whether I am interested or not.

As a side note, I will be updating the FCBD wiki page to help keep everybody on the same page with what needs to be done putting the book together. First item on the agenda, naturally is a cover, but other such things as selling ad space in the book and taking donations is also going to be extremely important over the next couple of months. When we have submissions for the book, they will be linked and posted here as well.

I'm confused, does this mean I can still submit something for the book?

Hmm... "RUN", and (the 'new' ((well not really)) version ((which isn't on comic genesis, but yeah)) of) Felney is about a guy with lots and lots of knackered cars that are permenantly being "done up". I may be able to do something with that... but no gaurantees, i have enough to be getting on with XD

Submit all you want, but unless you are churning out good stuff, I doubt you will get in.

I guess the easiest way would be to email them to me (redslime.netATgmail.com) once they're done, since I seem to be handling submissions. All technical specifics for the actual page size/resolution/etc. can be found on the wiki page cortland mentioned I think.

I know it's coming, but size requirements (at least a widthXheight ratio) would be nice.

From the wiki page:
The size our printer CURRENTLY recommends is 6.875 x 10.5" for FULL BLEED with 6.625 x 10.25" for IMAGE AREA aka TRIM SIZE.

The Format

* The final "trim" size of the book will be 6.625" x 10.25" with "full bleeds", therefore the artwork you submit needs to measure 6.875 x 10.5" image files at 600dpi (meaning 4125 pixels by 6300 pixels), grayscale or bitmap saved in TIFF format.
* NOTE ON BLEEDS: A "bleed" in printing terms means that your artwork can extend out to the very edge of the paper, with no need for a "margin." This allows you to create more artistically interesting designs with your page layout, but please BEAR IN MIND that when drawing you should not have any critical text or copy within a 1/4" margin of the paper. Traditional presses do shift and sometimes may be a little bit off on the very edge of the paper.
* Please use LZW compression or ZIP your final image files, since a full-sized greyscale TIFF page will be about 25MB uncompressed. If for some reason, you can't save your work in TIFF format, please let the editor know and we will work something out.

Aha, i do, just the new version of it isn't, most people remember it as a "keenspace comic", which shows how long it's been since it updated XD

Just a suggestion to maybe put this thread in the "Announcements" section so it doesn't fall off the front page...

Well, that kind of sucks.

I'm still submitting something. And I'll be contacting Diamond to let them know why I won't be in any comic book stores on May 3, too.

It wasn't his decision, so don't get too indignant, although I do agree it's odd that we only found this out through an interview. :/

He defends us well, though.
Since we’re not being allowed to participate in FCBD 2008, we won’t be trying to drive our millions of readers into comic shops this year.
