Black & white or colour?

Post by Paul Escobar »

When you make comics, do you work in black & white or in colour?

What were your considerations (if any) that made you choose the one over the other for your comics?

I've mostly done short black & white comics so far, and that look seems to fit well with the style of humour I make use of in those - colour wouldn't do anything for them. However, I'm currently doing page layouts for a more story-driven project which I think would work better in colour - something about presenting a "serious" fictional world seems to me to call for colour, for some reason I can't quite put my finger on. (Colouring is obviously a lot of additional work, so I honestly wouldn't mind someone offering an artistically valid reason to do it in black & white... rather than the reason of just wanting to avoid the extra work... ahem.)

when i worked on paper - i prefered color to flat out black and white , it gives far more avalable shades than just black and white -

i liked the prismcolor , colored pencils and Koh r Nor ( sp?) tech pens rangeing from 2 to .000001 black ink - :D

i used comic book ( not manga or anime ) or realistic stuff as a art style influenced by Geroge Perez , John Byern , Alex Ross , ect...

I like the starkness and contrast of black and white. It also simplifies matters, one less thing to think about. I think too many webcartoonists fail to really think through their color decisions.

I think my digitally coloured comics look far better than my old hand-inked black-and-white ones.

I don't have the money to have it coloured, and I'm sure as fuck not doing it.

I made a bit of a compromise. I wanted to see the pages in color, and since my story is character driven, I wanted the people to be really recognizable, which I thought color would help. But, I also didn't really have the time to color the pages, in addition to really not liking coloring in photoshop most of the time.

I thought of coloring traditionally, but the cost of the paper for the markers, and the markers themselves would have been too great.

So I decided, several comics in, that I would color a page when a new character appeared, when a big event in the story happened, or when the pages hit some kind of milestone number wise. So far, it's working out pretty well. Until I have time and patience to color them all, this works for me.

All I need to figure out now is if I want to add some kind of crosshatching or something for the black and white pages.

Black and white, 'cuz that's just how I roll. I find the thought of colouring things a bit daunting, really.

One thing that's nice about using black and white for the web is that you know your work is going to look the same to everybody who views it, whereas with color you're at the whim of whatever platform, browser, or monitor they're using. I've been pretty shocked at times how different those colors can look from computer to computer.

Not enough black & white Lego in your collection?

You could always take black & white photos, or reduce the color ones to greyscale... :)

Yes but unlike most people, doing things in black and white is actually more work for Lego.

I work in colour because it helps better define things and frankly makes my comic look better.

I started out in greyscale then worked my way up. I just ran out of shades of grey, and needed to branch out.

I work in both. I'm the Renaissance Man.

I work in color because I suck at color. I prefer my earlier gray scale pages, but I figure I can't get any better at color if I don't give it a try.

I work in color. I find it adds a lot of character to my work (and really hides the flaws.) My line art isn't good at all, really. If I don't work in color, I stay in pencil so at least I still have some of that "character." B&W isn't for me.

I use colour and there are two reasons why. Firstly, I don't draw well enough to be able to get away with black and white. I need to slathr my artwork in digital pigments to hide how bad it is.

Secondly, it suits the setting, feel and style of the comic.

So you're saying Legostar Galactica is in color because he's lazy...? :)

I love both, I love combining the two to see what it'll transform into after I'm done with it. So it really depends on how I feel n__n
