off panel collection

Post by Anarchist »

hello all- i wanted to put this here, becuase i know, a lot of you sometimes try, but can't manage to put a comic up, so they put up an off panel. i myself recently did this, it's a short one day hiatus really.

wanna post any of yours?
mine are not up yet, i have to scan and ink them, then i'll edit.

Actually, many of the comics in the current "storyline" (Ramblings of a Bygone Era) are old ideas that, because I liked them so much, I went back and redrew them to suit the current style of the comic. For the most part, I'm doing this to allow myself to come up with new stuff without having to miss updates... or something.

I pull my off-panels from the archives periodically now, at my readers' request. They're usually not much more than an explanation of why there's no comic, although I've done one for each of my 100 milestones...

Well if I'm understanding things correctly it's a form of filler that shows a sort of "Behind the Scenes" look at the comic such as dipicting what the characters do when they're not "on"

Think of it iterms of being "off camera"

At least that's what I think is being talked about.

I'm guessing he means something like filler or "dead piro day" artwork, something that's not part of the comic itself...

I do them from time to time, mostly either when something occurs to me (for instance, a jab at Boston), or when I'm stalling for time between chapters (next week...) but I've also been removing them from the archives periodically and sticking them into a secondary site that I'll (eventually) be linking into the main site's archives. Even between chapters, they're too disruptive to the narrative for me to leave in place for more than a week or two.

I personally figure, if I don't have enough time to do my actual page, I don't have enough time to do a filler either, so I may as well work through the page and get it up slightly late...

Like I said, my fillers are for buying time between chapters (which I use for page layouts and new character designs), or when I just feel like tossing out something extra (mocking lite-brite bombs).

I've done two. One was a page of character sketches, and the second was a short strip in a different style. Admittedly, I grabbed some things from my computer because it was during the holidays, and I was with family and friends and "real" people  bad bad comic artist.

I've never done filler, doesn't mean I won't just haven't yet. I'll throw in the occassional this is what's going on with these characters so you don't forget aboot them durring a really long story arc. It's also a little forshadowing.

If I do one, usually it's along the lines of a mock page. Like the one I did for the previous Friday the 13th.

Or pieces of stuff that I'm working on but don't want to share too much of.

Or sketchies of new costume concepts.

Or holiday extras, which are never up for more than 24 hours. I want them to be surprises.

Then there's occasional fan comment, that somewhat inspires me to do stupid things like this.

Then there was the time I made the collage of all the stupid faces of my main character.

Huh. I guess I do more of those than I thought I did.

I post daily, so yeah, I occasionally save some of my remaining nerves and do some filler: holidays, guest art, how my characters might appear on South Park..

Back in the Patchwork Heroes days, I had a "Backstage" section that was periodically updated. It was in addition to the main comic, though, not instead of it. I also used two "Intermission" sequences between the three acts of the piece.

I eventually got bored of it and it petered out.

I do them every once in awhile, but never on the actual update day. And I always pull them out of the archives afterwards so as not to interrupt the storyline. They're mixed in between my Filler and my Guest Art sections.

Hmm...recently I did a sneaky "excuse to be lazy" page with this Easter special...though perhaps that is too flashy to be considered lazy...
