My, how your characters have evolved.....

Post by Uncaringmachine »

Hey everyone, how about posting a then and now picture of your main characters showing how much they have changed over the years, or months...or days depending on how long you've been doing your comics? Here is Gothy then:

and Gothy now:

My way of drawing him changed drastically. Did yours?

I believe we already had a thread like this just a few months ago . . . anywho, this is the image I made for it again.

Yes, but only because I got much better at drawing, period.
Aside from some major anatomy improvements and such, the only thing that changed about Pimpette was the fact that she stopped wearing her fishnets.

Turkish, on the other hand, has changed his head shape quite a bit since his creation:

Nah, that was a thread about how the drawing style has changed... not the characters.

On that note... my artistic skill has changed, but my characters themselves really haven't.
This is going in my notebook titled "Things I Didn't Know about Surface Dwellers."

My comic's genesis (hah) was so convoluted that I can't even point at a single strip and definitively say "that's the earliest one". Still, here's what two of my main characters looked like in 2003 and last week. I guess I have actually gotten better at this..

Oh yeah, Josh's look has changed drastiacally over the years.

Oh, and I found the first ever Chang design page kicking around!

I added wings later. (And now I kick myself every time I draw them for making them so complex.)

I'm only putting up my main character, two other main-ish characters, and a secondary character. Everyones eyes have changed, but other than that it's mainly just me getting better, and the shading.

Verne:

Anna:

Ginny (Her hair is shorter now, but I'd meant it to be that short in the first place):
Image

Big Louie...sigh...he's never looked the same twice. He's actually supposed to look like a cross between how he did in these two strips:
Image

These three are actually from the same strip, and I still can't get him to look the same! Grr! (Also, I appear to have forgotten that he has a mustache...I need to change that before that strip goes up!):

Katrina was always intended to be one of the main cast, but I just never got around to introducing her until my current storyline (in which she'll play a major roll). And holy crap is that arm in the bottom right corner sample bad.
Image
However, since I never drew her that often once I actually started producing strips, her character design never evolved to match what I was doing with Andrew Creed or the others. Also, the shape of her face was too close to Andrew's and they ended up looking too similar. I recently set aside some time to bring her design up to date. I'm still fiddling with it, but I have a week or so until she shows up.
Image
Since my strip's set in a school, eventually the characters will start looking older (well, once I get better at actually depicting age). At the right is an idea of what I might do with Katrina once Senior Year gets closer.

As I do pictures, my characters really don't change. The quality of the pictures started crappy with a webcam and since I moved to an actual digital camera, the only real differences are hair cuts as not enough time has really passed for physical changes.

Sorry for no pictures, lack of time.
Jason has had a similar hair cut most of the time, it's a bit longer these days.
Sargon has gone from long to short and slowly back to long.
Mine has the greatest changes as I keep cutting it back to being really short very frequently.

Heed these words: I do not draw. Photos if you're lucky.

here's mine again, the evolution in art created the evolution of the character, I originally wanted her to look young for her age but my skills weren't up to capturing that, currently she's 14 but looks 10

the evolution was subtle in the comics but when shown in this one image it's clearly obvious

Didn't we just do this a short while ago?

Hmm, could've sworn like 3-4 months ago.

Anyways, I know I made an image already.

But since I switched from letter sized to tabloid sized, it might've warranted putting an extra image in it

Okay, I was bored and didn't feel like coloring just now, so I took mine a step further than I had in the last post, going through every strip that the main character's been in, and cutting out a bit whenever there's been a change in style, shading, or inking:

Image

Okay, so the last two are pretty dramatic changes than the rest are. The first of those is part of the chapter 4 title page, and the second is part of a comic where I tried a messier, paler style...which only lasts for that one comic.

I'll put up the same one I put up last time this sort of thread appeared about two months ago.

Mine haven't really evolved all that much since their inception. They've been refined a little, but to me they still look almost identical to how they did at the beginning. I'm just a little quicker, more confident and definite in how I draw them now.

Anyway, here's Casper from beginning to about December last year.

Cheers.

The only constant in all incarnations of my comic has been Dave Fizuth, so I'll do him.
