What kind of comics are you mainly into?

For discussions, announcements, non-technical questions and anything else comics-related or otherwise that doesn't fit in any of the other categories.

I don't mean "well written ones" or things like that. I mean, is there a genre that you generally steer towards, and why? And do other types of comics still have a chance with you? I prefer the humorous slapsticky stuff myself, but I like the occasional drama.

I read a bit of everything, as long as there's a progressing story.

Same here.

That and I like comics by people who do things well that I can't do well--like manga.

I like slice of life comics... but I also love adventure comics... and bizarre furry comics... Mostly I really like satire, I tend to avoid a lot of the more serious comics, except then I read The End of Things and Jack, so that's out of the question.

Honestly, the shorter list is "What I don't read" since that would just be a small tome, rather than the multi-book series of "What I do read."

I mainly read fantasy and sci-fi myself. I tend to stay away from most manga of this genre, because well, it's the same story with different characters (usually). There are the exceptions. But I like my fantasy/sci-fi stories a little dark...serious, not the cushy kind. And then I like reading ones that make me laugh, like SMBC.

Historical fiction, for sure. I also like non-medieval fantasy if it's done right. <3

I tend to get bored of gag comics quickly, but I don't have a lot of epic comics bookmarked, either. I guess I like the sort of comic that accumulates at least a few finished small stories before it goes on indefinite hiatus.

It has to be at least fairly well-written for it to catch my interest. As a whole, serial comics make up probably 2/3 of my bookmarks, with a LARGE portion of that being fantasy serial comics.

Mostly (but certainly not exclusively) newspaper-style strips with some humor, fun characters, and usually some sort of story going on.

Hmm...I like a lot of everything I guess, as long as it's well done. I like weird stuff, and fantasy stuff. I suppose I like story-based more than gag-a-day.

I like weird comics. I like underground-style comix spelled with an "x". I prefer reading anthologies of short stories to long, meandering epics. I would probably read a lot more giant robot comics if there were any giant robot comics on the web.

I'm pretty much open to anything that has decent writing in it.

So, yeah, not much.

I suppose my biggest quirk is that I've never seen a manga webcomic that I like. And I've seen plenty. Of course, if anyone has a suggestion or two or three that they think I might dig, PM me.

I read anything that has decent writing and anything that has decent art. Preferably something with a bit of both because then I start thinking to myself how awesome it would be if the comic only had better writing or art.

I like a little of everything, like these other guys. I do find I'm much more likely to look at comics with good art (imagine that, eh?) or with a unique setting - like Post-Nuke or Alpha Shade. I don't really have any standards for gag strips, it's just about whether I think they're funny. I also make an effort to find comics with gay characters and tend to have much lower standards for returning to read more.

I tend to hate epic fantasy comics and manga, but that has less to do with anything inherent to the genre than with lazy worldbuilding and bad storytelling. Both genres tend heavily towards formulas, and looking at my favorite comics none of them can be described as "formulaic" at any level.

I also have to really like a comic to be willing to read right-to-left. I hate that.

Generally slice of life.

I like sci-fi, but I don't read all that much fantasy stuff, especially not those pretentious m4nga fantasy ones with the long, convoluted storylines and cookie-cutter black and white art, filled to bursting with eye-offending screentones.

I also can't stand surrealist stuff. I don't mind the Chef Brian style of non-sequitur, "random is funny" humour, but I can't get into a long, confusing parade of people with bowling pins for heads, rambling about the subconscious in a neverending monolugue, rife with words that I'm sure were only coined so that sanctimonious "tortured atists" could riddle their dialogue with them and confuse the general public.

(Yes, I do understand the irony of the wordiness of the preceeding sentence.)

Something light hearted in a slice of life sort of setting which doesn't try too hard but focuses its humour around the characters rather than any long overriding story.

Character driven, everyday regularity for me, thank you very much.

I tend to lean towards furry comics at first, or anything really funny (except gamer comics). I'm usually not one for fantasy unless I get pulled in by the characters. So I prefer hilarious comics, but usually, I'll end up sticking with comics that combine humor, drama, action, and romance successfully and have good character development.

Yeah... that should cover most everything out there. :shifty:

My list has a lot of dark humor comics, and of those about half are gag-a-day or nearly so, and half are story based. The rest are serials with the occasional gag strip but basically telling a story or stories in the writer's world. Three are "modern day" type strips. The rest are not on this Earth or not in this time period.

While the art on all of them is generally good or at least consistant, only two or three have realistic art. And only maybe a dozen have truely high quality non-realistic art. The rest range from slightly below average to slightly above average art.

About half the comics are in some way furry. About half the comics are in no way furry.

ALL the comics in my current comic list update semi-regularly. This is, above all else, my core requirement (besides "liking it") for a comic I really get into. I have a second list for comics that update so infrequently that checking once a month will do. There are two comics that are no longer updating regularly that are still in my regular list, because I'm hoping they will start to update again.

About a third of the comics are on ComicGenesis or Keenspot.
