Perfectionism
Perfectionism
How much of a perfectionist are you?
I often find myself spending up to an extra hour on a single comic just making sure that all the details are nice and smooth. Sometimes I even scrap an entire idea and redraw a comic from the ground up. I'm sure this is the case with most artists, I just wanted to know the concensus.
For example: I'm on the 7th page of my new comic and I just now started using a new font. Now I'm going to go back and put in that new font on all of the older pages. It's a good thing that I'm not on, say, page 50 or something.
I am, however, much more slapdash with my writing, which is something I need to work on.

I tend to let things go if I'm feeling lazy or up against a deadline. I figure, "it'll be better tomorrow".
Though it's more often a case of the former than the latter.

Nup. No perfectionist here. If I make a slight wobble with my pen then it stays there. I wouldn't want to imagine the frustration that I perceive would go along with being a perfectionist. Give it your best, of course, but there are limits.
I did go and colour the first 160 strips once I changed to colour though, but that was because I wanted to and made that decision, not because I was anal about it. There's so much more to do than pissfart around worrying about bumps and bruises in your artwork, in my reckoning.

Two kinds of perfectionism: Perfect art, or perfect update schedule.Cope wrote:I only try to update on time.
Guess which attracts more readers.

I reallly should redraw those last two panels...
That depends on how bad the art is.
EDIT: and now it looks like I'm dissing Dutch.

I'm such a perfectionist that I don't even bother to draw my comic.
Well, back when I was, I would actually draw 10-20 pages at once so that they'd all have a coherent look to them, but of course I could only update every few months doing that, another reason for that one being cancelled.
But then again, as noted, I may just be confusing perfectionism with laziness. Ah well. I should make one of those self help posters, but instead of a drug addled bum there's just a simple image of a blank computer screen, user passed out on the keyboard underneath, with the caption; "Don't let it happen to you!".

I have the bad kind of perfectionism, which is what kept me from updating the comic (among a variety of reasons). Didn't want to start any projects until I knew I was "good enough" to do them, which basically meant never. And then I set impossible goals for myself with the quality. The execution is never good enough for me, so the results don't often make me very happy.

Fair's fair though. You can slag off at me as long as I can take the piss out of Queenslanders.Cope wrote:That depends on how bad the art is.

Total perfectionist. If I don't like something it get's binned. Which is annoying, because if I've been scripted something that I KNOW is outside my good drawing ability (although that's pretty rare these days) then I just never get it finished. Seriously buggers the updates, but means that when my work is done, it's done well.
Although I'm an arse when it comes to updates anyway, but I tell myself I'll make it up to my readers somehow.

Drawing the comic is actually part of an effort on my part to be less of a perfectionist. It can be very paralyzing, but having to make an update schedule and having my writer push my artistic abilities really forces me to be realistic about my time. That's, of course, not to say my comic is perfect, or that it doesn't take me days to draw it.

I'm a perfectionist when it comes to illustrations or other art, but not really with my comics. I mean, sometimes, yeah. But I do slack more in comic art than other art because I want to get the darn thing updated... not on time, mind you.
Eh.
Sometimes I really think I'm not cut out for comicmaking...
