Evil
Take a peek at my current frontpage comic... (the one for the 15th feb 06)
I was just thinking - how evil are you about your webcomic?
Oh and uh, my webcomic is a tad NSFW (to put it mildly)
but how evil are you to your comic? Are you a little cartoonist/sadist?
(and I know I put this half an hour before my comic'll update...)

There are many ways to be evil to comicking. There's the good evil, where you're constantly injuring you characters and playing with their heads; and there's the bad evil, where you pour out bad art and weak writing before going on a lengthy haitus every couple weeks.
Which one were you referring to?

My opinion is that the most evil thing you can do to your characters is to put them in a bland story, make their characterisation flat, not to give them satisfaction of actually being characters of a good comic.
If we can talk about characters in terms of living beings, then their purpose here is to participate in the story. If the comic is bad than their existence is missed.
That means that if something bad happening to the character is requirement for the story, then there is nothing sadistic about it.
I generally don't believe in art psychoanalysis, not in it's simple form where every author who puts women as victims is instantly proclaimed a mysoginist, every author who puts characters under physical pain is called sadist and every writer who writes horror is called crazy. I remember reading a study where someone specualted that entire new German cinematography is phallic-obsessed and that all moders German directors are latent gays. That kind of observing of art is ridiculous.

It's one of the reasons I went from ComicGen to WCN. Yes, I'm willing to pay money every year, but I prefer to have the freedom to put what I want on my site to make money for myselfjesusabdullah wrote:Vorticus wrote:Busted!Mercury Hat wrote:By "evil" do you mean breaking the rules by putting the advertisement banner at the bottom of your website?I missed that rule myself. Good think I never broke it on accident.
When it comes down to it though, not paying anything, and not being able to advertise for yourself is still a really good way to start....as you really shouldn't be making money instantly unless you're famous from some other industry or something.
Caught in the headlamp glare of your own blinding vanity/Mesmerised by the stare of your shallow personality
Gorging the junk food of flattery you drag your fat ego around/Everyone floored by the battering you give to whoever's around
Oh Narcissus you petulant child admiring yourself in the curve of my eyes/Oh Narcissus you angel beguiled unsated by self you do nothing but die
