Updating Your Comics

Post by Castle_Builder »

After reading web comics for so long it seems to me that MANY people just seem to draw a strip the day before it updates.

It appears not too many people have a backlog of strips already done that are set to automatically update on a future date or dates.

That being said this is just a wild opinion I have and I could be very wrong.

I thought it might be an interesting topic to know more about.

On average, I start creating my comics about three days after they're supposed to go up.

I start maybe two days before the update. Then, I will watch TV, surf the forums, and then maybe 13 seconds before, I'll attempt to do it. Really should stop doing that.

I usually write mine in batches, completing a full story arc at a time (between 6 up to 20 odd strips) and upload them ready for the dates they are planned for. If I have another story arc written or ready to be worked on, I'll start on the next and build up the buffer, aiming to get as far through a term of comics as I can before going back to the classroom.

In between, that's thinking time. Several weeks to just sit back and slowly start putting together the next few ideas into stories. I've been a bit busy with camp and concert organisation these last few weeks though, so my buffer is falling. I'm right now until early/mid November, so it's just about time to start drawing up the next story arc. That should get me to the end of the year, and I can spend a bit of time thinking again.

In short, quick, intense bursts of drawing followed by longer periods of idea development.
Remember when your imagination was real? When the day seemed
longer than it was, and tomorrow was always another game away?

I tried to have a backlog, but it didn't work out. It was an excuse for me to be lazy. I don't have a backlog anymore, yet I have still updated on time without fail for...wow, it's been 8 months. :)

I chose 'I drew tomorrow's strip today', but, ya know, it's inaccurate. It takes me 3 days to draw a page. More accurate would be, 'I *finished* tomorrow's strip today'.

I always end up doing the bulk of the work the night before. Sometimes I don't finish until after midnight, so I have to manually update the site. I have terrible work habits.

You've now officially started more threads in two and a half months than I started in the entire past year.

And my answer wasn't up there. :-?

I used to have a biiig buffer in the past, about a month ahead or so...then I got lazy (and busy to my defence!!) from time to time and finally drew just in time for updates...or after them in some cases...

Lately I'm using a 2-week buffer...

You know it seems I won't destroy this buffering attempt....

Time will tell...

Whenever I find time to draw, I do it. When I finish, I post it up immediately or the next day. I don't have a schedule, but I try to post one up once a week.

Well cause of this lazy grind that I'm in, I am trying to update a day ahead. I'd like to have a buffer, but honestly I don't have much time to sit down and just draw for hours. I'd rather go out and hang with friends; something that will always be put above doing a silly little webcomic.

sometimes I do a batch and slowly work on them, recently I'd become like 2 weeks ahead of myself but evacuating backed me up to where I do a strip 3 days before it's to go up, but sometimes I have to rush and get it up halfway through the date it's due up right now I'm coloring Fridays for example -_-;;

Since I started posting cleaned-up decade-old comics, I am blissfully many weeks ahead again. This allows me time to work on new material and do it properly.

For a long time between 2003 and 2005, I was only days ahead, if that. This did not allow me to create the best work I possibly could. So I decided that now was as good a time as any to start filling the big gaps in my archives. Haven't missed a day or been less than two weeks ahead since.

I usually start the comic the night before it's supposed to go up. So a lot of my ideas and art is entirely improvised. It probably explains how my humor isn't as refined as it probably could be.
