Comic Genesis site!

Post by Joel Fagin »

I need the input of the board on something.

In the original website mock-up, I replaced the guide link with a series of genre links which are a bit more user friendly. However, I also just made them up on the fly, so... Whadda you guys want?

Currently, I'm thinking...

Comics by Joel Fagin, Favourite comics of Joel Fagin, sci-fi, fantasy, gaming, manga, anthro, school and college, romance, workplace, by language, by content rating and all comics.

(I removed "By popularity" - which is in the mockup above - since I realised it's the same as "All comics".)

Even if you're happy with what's there, I'd still like further ideas. I may need to pad it out to make three neat columns on the webpage.

Oh, and any comments on the order while I'm here?

There should be a humor section =/

Also something like "weird" or "experimental"

Wonderful. Finally Keenspace/spot main page actually looks like it's a webcomic host.
Plus I like that "submit" and "join" links are above comics. Readers of comics are supposed to be in larger number than visitors.

I hope Jops will find what he's looking for, though.

It just dawned on me that the circular pogs might not work, since we can't rely on the comic author to use the same masking. (we can fix the size, but I'm hesitant to say we can make circular halos)

My two suggestions, make sure that if non-circular (but still square boxed areas) are used, it doesn't break.

Second, we might be able to use GD or imagemagick to either shadow the image provided the author uploads a color key or alpha masked image or have some kind of standard image. I'm not concerned about the better artists knowning how to do this themselves, but assisting the artists that are not experienced in image manipulation is tricky. I know in theory we can draw circles in GD/Imagemagick, but as for masking it to the circle, *shrug* ... I know how to do it in SVG.

Might have to have an approval process like the signups for the pogs, where if it doesn't line up, it get's rejected for a do-over.

I don't want to delay the front page at all since it's been looking unprofessional for too long and the CG logo's have been broken since the switchover.

I have got a pog template ready. All that's required is that a picture to be squeezed in between the background and halo layers. Instructions are included.

But it does assume that people have Photoshop (or similar).

I also have a similar template for Genchan but that's far less of a problem since she's optional anyway.

It looks really nice, and I love the color scheme and buttons and stuff. Though be aware of one small typo: "one's below" shouldn't have an apostrophe.

Thanks. I actually caught that last night. The mockup's just old.

Oh, that's brilliant. Very useful. You missed "Sprite", though, so bonus points for that. Image

Edit: RPGs and manga, too.

Is it Anthromorphic or Anthropomorphic, though? Heck, did I even spell "anthropomorphic" right?

It's anthropomorphic, though it's usually shortened to anthro'.

Doh! for missing Manga.

I reckoned RPGs would fit under some gaming / fantasy hybrid.

And sprites would be gaming.

Because that would mean counting creation mediums as well, wouldn't it? You'd have to stick lego and photocomics and stickfigures as well.

I'd just like to point out that I'm somewhat positive that you were speaking in English. Anything beyond that is mere speculation on my part.

Joel, that is awesome. It really invites people to look around. That design has singlehandedly destroyed my biggest complaint about ComicGenesis and their very un-user friendly home page.

Yes. The whole thing is based on the Guide. All the links will do is sort or filter the Guide according to those categories.

In fact, what we want is pretty much already done here. Putting them on the front page is simply more direct and accessable.

I should point out that the Guide does not currently have a sci-fi category, although it does have "future", "androids" and suchlike which are a pretty good indication.

I also meant to add something along these lines earlier. I forgot. Apologies.
