Actually...

I believe that all life on earth is drawn from a pool, and once you die, that energy returns to the pool, imprinted with all your life's experiences. These experiences (both good and bad) mix into the pool, enriching it. In this way the sum of all life on earth slowly evolves spiritually.

Please don't ask me to defend this with science (all kidding aside).

Kind of like Final Fantasy VII?

My favorite? Possibly Gaiman's Endless. Any afterlife where you get escorted by a Death chica that goshdurn cute has my vote.

Actually, I think that was the Final Fantasy movie.

They both have the same basic idea. FFVII called it the Lifestream while Spirits called it Gaia.

How about Kurt Vonnegut's visions of the afterlife in God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater or Slapstick! or: Lonesome No More?

Basically, a big boring place with nothing to do. You can either be bored forever, or be reborn on Earth as a totally different person who will more than likely experience mostly pain and suffereing.

Or how about Mark Z. Danielewski's vision of the afterlife in House of Leaves. That was eerie as hell.
