Don't have any pictures I drew as a child, but this album showcases self-portraits from the time I was in 9th grade, until now. (14th grade) Conveniently, my main character is something of a self-portrait, so you can see me at my now-best at the link down there.

Going through an old childhood journal... been showcasing some of the funniest bits to the chat :P
Here's an illustration of a journal entry, drawn when I was seven:

Just now I sat down and made a "modernized" version of it - no pencils, just a felt tip pen and some crayola markers:

Of course, for best examples of recent artwork there's always my deviantart account - but I thought the above was a pretty good example of progression.

When I was really little I drew these funny egg-like people that were sometimes pretty hilarious.

Then I got into a stage where I drew nothing but snakes, alligators and dragon-like things. Basically anything reptillian with big sharp teeth.

Then I started copying comic books, so there were lots of superheroes and that was sort of the beginning of me getting a better grasp on body dimensions and so on.

Eventually I started developing a more cartoon-ish style while at the same time continuing to improve my anatomy. And that eventually lead me to where I am now.

I started with a circle that had two stick legs coming out the bottom and a bar across the middle for the arms. I don't have proof of this, but I recall it quite well. I also remember pretty clearly the day I discovered that if I drew CLOTHES, the people came out looking much more realistic! That was kindergarten, I think, only it happened at the preschool where I went after school for daycare.

Then I discovered how simple it was to draw in the anime style and tried that for a while. I have a stash of what are essentially early comics of spiky-haired triangle faces getting pies thrown at them. Elementary school, I believe.

In middle school I drew wolves tearing people apart. Middle school sucked ass.

And now I'm drawing sarcastic webcomics. Woohoo!

I used to draw a series of comics called "Doodles" where various stick figure characters criticized society around them, I also made fun of absolutely everything I could find. It was probably the edgiest comic ever produced by a 5th grader.

When I was in 2nd grade, though, I had a penchant for drawing Kirby. I loved to make Kirby drawings.

What? Thirteen is legally childhood!

Post by Cope »

Not exactly a childhood picture in the strictest sense of the word, but I drew this when I was thirteen. Anything earlier was drawn entirely in pencil and is now too faint to scan.

Y'know, I look at this now and am amazed at how much I haven't improved...

Great. I was 15 or 16 then...and spending my time in class drawing the shortlived but much hyped at the time gay elephant Clarence...they will never see the light of day again...although the old loose leaf papers are still folded in a cupboard somewhere...

I do remember starting to draw stickmen when I was about four and mum yelling at me for being lazy and going backwards...apparently I drew full figures of a sort at an earlier age, but I don't have anything pre mid highschool.

The oldest works I have are done when I was 15, anything I had before then is long gone. Its a real pity. :(

hmm

something old?

Well, I started the path down to where I am now several years ago, starting out with this very pic here - this was at least five or six years ago:

Image

Then I got a scanner and started coloring stuff using PSP... (the pic here being the first I ever colored using PSP)

Image

Then I got a tablet...

I could have whipped out some REALLY old pics from when I was really young, but my current style has nothing to do with what I did then...

The name's Sprite yo! Don't be steppin'! =]

Actually there is a contest running right now, but no one really seems interested in it. Oh well maybe I'll have better luck next time on the idea, but I'll keep this one in mind.

Now:
Clicky my webcomic here!

It's amazing that I still manage to maintain my style after so many years.
(It's also a hint that I never improve much)

I have some old sketchs back at home. And I actually made it a point to improve on my style that I did way back in grade school, high school, etc. I guess I might be an exception though.

It's a shame you didn't continue that style you were doing at age 12. It's both unique and familiar at the same time.

What really strikes me about my old drawings is how recognizable they are as having been drawn by me. It's uncanny how you can tell even my oldest drawings were done by the person that draws PQM.
