THE NEVER ENDING BATTLE! Which Graphics program is better?!

Post by [AlmightyPyro] »

We've all had the fight. Which is better? PSP, Photoshop, GIMP, Paint?

I have been playing with Photoshop recently, and I do like it. but I sstill like PSP7 better for inking a comic.

Everyone has the opinion so espress yours!! Will the PSP Pirates destroy the Photoshop Ninja's?! Or will the GIMP warriors destroy all?
I'm glad 90's style forum signatures don't exist anymore.

Since I've never used anything else, I'll have to go with the Gimp....

My vote goes to PSP. But i've only used it and GIMP of those.
Ofc, these are not the only ones...
How about Flash, Painter, Illustrator, or above all else MS Paint !

If your on a budget, GIMP BABY! Ya can't beat free! :D

Paint is le suck no matter how you look at it. One can do great things with it but there are better tools out there. Like Paint.NET! And I havn't used any of the others... 'cept for a 30 day trial for PSP.

Macromedia Fireworks.

In my experience, equal to Photoshop for bitmap-type graphics but with much greater flexibility for vector graphics. I can color and do text without having to fight with the damn thing.

I also use it in the lab for putting together figures.

Photoshop. I've been using it for six years and it's a habit very hard to break, plus it's not a bad program at all if you know your way around it - which I like to think I do.

Other than that, there's Painter, it's very good for non-technical computer drawing and just plain old pretty pictures, Painter is awesome.

Flash - I hear good things about its vector-y-ness (Photoshop vectors suck pretty bad) so I'm interested in trying it someday, I haven't got the program though.

PS is great stuff.

Painter is spectacular, but I don't have the full version so it doesn't get my full vote. TAKE THAT, Corel!

Gimp 2.0 all the way. I'm on a budget and it's the best you can get for free. I will admitt it crashes occasionally. Photoshop is okay, but way out of my price range.

Since I don't use windows for my comic my only real choice is GIMP. Inkscape doesn't make the cut even though I think vector graphics are THE way to go (or will be in he near future). The interface just isn't up to speed. In order to get my art into vector form, though, I would need to either make some serious changes to the way I draw or scan at an ultra high resolution.

Photoshop and the GIMP are very close in my opinion. The interfaces are quite different and I can see where people have problems moving between the two but to say one is less than the other is silly. Photoshop has more filters and features but the grunt work I need for my comic is doable on either. I like the way GIMP saves images better than Photoshop's save for the web feature but Photoshop is one up on GIMP because it tells you how big the resulting PNG or GIF will be when GIMP just lets you change the compression ratio. GIMP's Jpeg saving window is superior to save for the web, though.

Despite this, vector graphics will always save smaller than anything either Photoshop or GIMP can put out. For large comics, small size is essential. So, Flash wins. Too bad I can't use it.

EDIT: I just installed Paint.NET. It's a nice toy but it's barely at the level of GIMP 1.2. It has layers but doesn't create a new layer for each text object. The text isn't editable after it's placed either. I didn't see an elliptical select tool so the only way to make word balloons is to freehand the shape. It has the look of photoshop, but that's all.

I'm sorry but I'd have to say my butt is the best one. But since I can't choose that I'll say Photoshop, I tried paintshop first and never really liked it.

I'll have to cast my vote for Photoshop. PSP didn't like my computer very much and I've been using Photoshop for the past 3 years and it hasn't steered me wrong yet.
I want to get the full version of painter some time too, since the one I have right now doesn't support layers so it suuuuuucks.

I've only ever used Paintshop Pro and I tried GIMP maybe once. Photoshop scares me. Paintshop Pro is cheap compared to PS, too, a new copy's around 100 bucks :D .

GIMP is the suxxors, and definite proof that you get what you pay for (in this case, nothing).

PSP feels like a kid's graphic editor, and Photoshop is too expensive.

Give me Corel Photopaint.
Faith is what credulity becomes when it finally achieves escape velocity from the constraints of terrestrial discourse- reasonableness, internal coherence, civility, and candor. Thus, the men who commited the atrocities of September 11 were neither cowards nor lunatics of any sort, but Men of Faith- perfect faith- and this, it must finally be acknowleged, is a terrible thing to be.

Bah. There is no better/crappier.

The best program in the world in the hands of someone who doesn't know how to use it still sucks.

Even MS-Paint is capable of producing good stuff it you know how.

Photoshop 7, b'otches.

I have GIMP 2.0 installed on my comp, but I've never learned how to use it properly. I might like it better if I could use it.
