Keenspace.com Giving Season wishlist 2004
Okay, Time to try something new. (Yes I know it's halloween/harvest day/fall season)
I'd like people to "request" a feature. This isn't a promise that any will be implemented, however I'd like people to know what they want to make Keenspace better.
However if people can agree on at least one specific feature that they'd all like I'll try and get that done by end of 2004. Okay?

What the hell, how can you be a keenspace wanna-be? It's a free hosting service. Stop posing and draw and damn comic.
As for something we could add to keenspace....maybe a ranking list of keenspace comics by popularity....I guess it would measure how many visits or page views people get. I dunno, you guys have done so much already for keenspace, it's hard to think of whatelse we need.

We already have that. It's http://guide.keenspace.com

Oh, I have a comic, just not a Keenspace one. It's on my own webspace and being a comic which is shortly to end, I know it fits in the available space quite easily. Meantime, I avoid the adverts.McBean wrote:What the hell, how can you be a keenspace wanna-be? It's a free hosting service. Stop posing and draw and damn comic.
If I do another comic, it'll be Keenspace.*

* Briefly. I expect Spot to bang on my door after, oh, three comics or so.

Trying to get the kinks out of the ad-banners so they load faster would be nice, though if that's the fastest the banner can load, discard this idea.

Joel had some good ideas here. I'll have to pitch my vote for the "click through to the next comic" thing. The chapter buttons would be nice, too.

I agree with the next and previous chapter buttons...but I'm not sure how you would work those.
More up-to-date website monthly stats? Mine haven't updated since May.
Maybe a monthly newsletter, similar to the one onlinecomics.net runs, that people can submit comic news to?

I think it would be interesting to somehow include a reader-based ranking system and maybe let them give short reviews of the comics. The problems with this is that it's prone to cheating, it's something the top 100 sites do already and it's still prone to popularity.
More interesting but probably less possible would be a google-like ranking system that showed comics based on the number of other comics that linked to it, modified by the quality (number of comics linking to said comic) of the comics linking to the site. It would be interesting to see just how many little niche groups there are and push highly connected, unpopular comics to the surface.
A keenspace ad server would be nice or get somebody to fix gavzad, though I understand that both these are next to impossible for managerial reasons.
Something that would would not add a load on autokeen: site templates. If a user is totally clueless about HTML or doesn't want to mess with it, don't give them an online editor. Just give them a wizard that lets them choose from a couple default styles, lets them mess with colors, add a logo and upload comics. The resulting site could be XHTML and CSS compliant without the user touching the code. You could even allow the wizard to add tagboard or counter code that the user copied from another site. Best of all, this wouldn't require autokeen to be modified.
Clicking the comic image to advance to the next strip would be excellent. I think Joel mentioned that.
Some official documentation explaining "appropriate" material and why certain "inappropriate" materials were cause for takedown. For example, Ghastly's Jesus sex comic and the evil Bert pics that the owners of Sesame Street called for a takedown of a while back.
Some official documentation on the guts of autokeen. What all the tags are and how they affect the site, specifically to get ***css_calendar*** included in the list with a howto on maybe how to remove the W links and so on.
Some official notice of how big a comic needs to be, how big an avatar needs to be, how big sig banners need to be. Where the ad banner needs to be and where to include a link back to keenspace. Why hotlinking has been disabled and how Norton Security/Firewall interacts with this. People are a little sceptical when they don't get this info from an official source. Include what types of files and content are appropriate (not mp3s, avis, etc.). If this information is officially stated then people can't complain. Otherwise you get "well, I didn't see that in the FAQ so I'm not going to do it" They think it's optional when they can actually lose their site over it.

Ah, thanks. I tried to find that earlier but somehow failed.Mercury_Hat wrote:viewtopic.php?p=711840#711840

Actually, they can be done with Javascript but it's messier. Better to have them integrated and straightforward.Haru to Ashura wrote:I agree with the next and previous chapter buttons...but I'm not sure how you would work those.

i'd like to see new work done with the newsbox/newshack. I love what it does for pageviews but I also have seen it slanted with people who don't have newsboxes and also certain sites get more hits than others and I think it would be great to possibly even it out somehow.
also I'd like to see more rewards for sites that update regularly. I know newshack takes away sites that don't update as often but I'd like to see more promotion for us poor saps who update every other day.
otherwise I want to say I love keenspace and everything you do for us. Kisai and Stredwolf you people are godsends and you make life wonderful for us, whether or not we apprecaite it.

Hmm
How about optional ***back_10_days*** and ***forward_10_days*** Autokeen-buttons.
I've seen other comics have it and I think its really useful if the comic has like 500 strips. Then again there IS the calendar system AND maybe the chapter thingy. Still I think it'd be cool to HAVE that as an option.

I'd like to see the ***big_calendar*** tag improved to (a) allow CSS styling of it and (b) remove the broken "W" links. Other than that, I have no complaints about leaving the service just the way it is.

I think showing the top ten webcomics on space would be a cool idea as well. Not only that, but might have a section where it shows the latest new comics that are coming out. This way to promote new comics that come in who might not get any recognition all that fast. Sort of like a
"Current Hits"
and a
"New Release"
box things. A person can set up an image in their keenspace account and hit submit when they'd like to be placed in the new release section. Meanwhile the "current hits" (top ten) would load up an image that the user would set up to load anytime their comic got into the ranking.
Not totally sure if that all makes sense, I'm not good at explaining things.

The "W" links are part of KeenSpot Premium (aka Ad-Free browsing). I've been bugging Nate and Gav about that but nothing seems to be working.
I'm half tempted to try faking it out a bit.
