D you remember your first fans

Post by McDuffies »

Ehh, it was two years ago, but I think the first person I registered reading and linking my comic was Roz of "These days" - of course, back then it was "Tesseract". Then somewhere around that time came links on Slightly Schizophrenic and M.A.C. Studios, a bit later a link from Warren and undoubted appreciation by M.E.Charm (who had no comic on his own to link me at that moment).
I'm really thankfull to all those people, just seeing my link on other comic's page ment a lot to me, perhaps a lot more than it means today. Stats did say that someone was actually reading my comic but links showed that someone liked it too, and of course, a chance to meet those who liked my comic was priceless.
Fan mails came only a lot later.
What about you? Who are first fans of yours that you remember?

First site to link me. I can't remember who sent me my first fanmail, though.

The first fan mail I got was from someone who's still on my forums. He said something about if I had made a cult, he'd join it, or something.
It was all very flattering considering how much my comic sucked back then.

My first fans were four girls and a guy whom I knew from high school. 'course, since they'd read my comics as I drew them, they never really bothered to read'em online ... the first person I know of as far as linking to me is of course the venerable Turnsky.

My first random reader sent me an e-mail that compared my comic to a daisy on a butchering table. I'm still not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

The first folks to link to me were ChaosCricket and NoiseMonkey from Dim Bulb Comics.
Thanks guys! :D

I don't really remember my first fan. But I do remember this guy named "dave" He wrote fan mail every now then, for my first keensapce comic a few years back and he didn't complain which was a plus. As sort of treat I murdered him in one of my comic pages.

I wonder whatever happened to that dude...

My first real fan (besides myself and some of my friends, of course) was a fellah calling himself Arivia. He disappeared for a little bit, but he's just recently popped back up in the forums again now that he's got some free time on his hands.

He's one of the first folks to start pimping out my comic without being asked to, and he's generally a pretty swell dude besides. As a thanks for sticking with RotD for so long, I drew him a quick sketch of the strip's characters around a cake for his birthday . . . making me kind of his fan in return, I guess. ;)

I believe he's one of the only people that read my comic that aren't webcomic artists themselves or people I've known for a while and suckered in from other forums I frequent.

Writing, for me, but yeah. Naflign, Sobbekarra (who thought I was Naflign under a different name), Orakio of the Domes, David Redshaw, Archon, Neilast, Santa and others. For such praise and enthusiasm for my first, tentative written works online, I owe them much. I wouldn't have continued without it.

note the post dates, this is the birthplace of foxfire.. and i know the images don't work, since they've been long since removed from the server i was linking them from.

I started my comic about three-four months ago, and I'm always happy when I spy a new (real) referrer. I think my favourite is this one:
Comic
This... is hilarious... its the funniest comic I've ever seen... I mean, you've got funny... then you've got Dragon Warrior, then you have this comic. It is so good, I have it set as my desktop background... Laugh with me, it is the story of my life
And then a link. Personally I think he's overselling it, but then, I haven't read "Dragon Warrior" in case that turns out to be rubbish and I have to assume mine is worse.

I'll try to remember him.

Somehow I don't remember who it was to first link to us, probably ORBVS. However, I do remember the first email I got about the first (crappy) art I put online, seems to me the guy just wanted me to join his webring. heh heh.

I had a guy who read the entire archive late one night... back then only a few hundred comics, and wrote me to tell me how he annoyed his fiancee by doing so.

The first random fan I got (random meaning someone I hadn't met before, or specifically told to go to my site) came from OnlineComics.net:
This is some funny stuff! Very clever premice indeed. I came for stories about a female pimp (rock the F**k on!) and i stayed for the wacky man-ho anticks. Good Comic. ^_^
My first link came from AoD

I don't think I have a fan yet. I have people who check my comic on a semi regular basis, but no fans.

I remember my first ever piece of mail was from a guy named Mike who I believe had his own Keenspace comic too back then (three and a half years ago, wow) - he said he made a point of periodically looking around to see what people on Keenspace were doing, and then sending an encouraging message to the author of something he liked.

What a nice idea.

Heh... I was a Coolville fan prior to drawing my own comic. I remember that much (though I breezed in at your 6 month mark).

For Sawdust, when it first came out, I palled around with some other comics that popped up around that time. It was like a bunch of guys enlisting and staying buds through boot camp. Unfortunately, they all have dropped out.

But my "internet block" was with Mythocorp and Fiddly Bits. Outside of my personal friends, the first non-webcomic reader to voice his fandom was SimeSublime. He remained one of the only regular forum posters, even through my hiati.

my first fan response was from Mr. Ekshin who asked some important questions, like "Where do they poo?"

I remember this because I've copied and pasted everything into a fan file, even my tagboard comments. When I get linked from a forum, I go to the forum and search for Roughies, and I find some good comments that way.

Mr. Ekshin on Roughies: It's haunting and happy at the same time. I get an eerie happy/creepy feeling every time I read it.
