Let's try to gather inside jokes from this forum.

Actually, there's a lot more that you'd think. Simple example:
In order to explain someone why we draw YarpsDat with an eyepatch, we'd have to explain that he used to have a big eye as avatar, then Mr.Bob drew that eye dislocated in his fanart for War, and then YarpsDat drew himself with eyepatch to prove that he's not dead.
Which would take a couple of minutes.

not only do I not see why you'd want to go out of your way to make inside jokes, as it then seems like your manufacturing ways to make new people feel unwelcome, but I don't understand why anyone would give a shit about why an avatar has an eyepatch

No, it's the very opposite. At first, the inside jokes keep feeding newcomers with a motivation to stay, so that one day they'll understand the in-jokes. And then, once the newcomers are in the group, it keeps the group together. Just look at...uh...some forum that doesn't have a lot of in-jokes. They're boring.
