Comic styles, what's your fav?

Post by KittyKatBlack »

Recently I noticed a lot of people talking about which styles they like compared to others, and I thought I'd take a poll to see what the mass majority of people like in a comic, as far as artistic style goes.

Hard to say: I kinda prefer a more Marvel/DC kinda style in my comics which probably won't go into any of the categories.

As to how I draw, I probably classify under something that's between manga and real, though probably closer to real. (I know this reads a little funny as I did Mitch and Tesseract, but that other style is the one I work with most often).

My least favourite style has to be manga/anime even though I borrow a few elements out of it. But that seriously is just me - style mixing is cool.

I guess I should have clarified a bit. I didn't want to add TOO many options, I just tried to cover the basics. Marvel/DC would go under realistic, I guess. Anything that looks sort of like american animation that's not Loony Toon style would be Realistic. Anime is self explanitory. Cartoony is Loony Toon style. Furry is a toss up. Anything that's based around the ideas of furries. An example of Furry comics would be one that has ALL furry characters. If there's a mix of different kinds of characters, but some are animals (Like Loony Toons) that would be cartoony, I guess. Abstract is more or less the stuff that doesn't have a classification. Sort of like Devo-Bot's avatar. Whatever means you just don't care, you just like comics, no matter what they look like.

It really depends on what sort of content I'm looking for, to decide what kind of style I like. Good 'ol realistic American-style comics are my favorite for dramatic stuff. For some reason, I prefer CG comics like Achewood (http://www.achewood.com) or Scary-Go-Round (http://www.scarygoround.com) for gag strips, but that probably has more to do with the sort of people who do CG strips than anything, because Wigu (http://www.wigu.com) is also super incredible.

But I just don't like to read manga-style stuff for some reason. I like plenty of anime, but the non-moving pictures just kind of get me down. :-?

Interesting how "David Boring" seems to sit in the same category as "Spawn."

Where's the "whatever" option?
(You could try adding an option. I'm not sure if it works though.)

I think I'll go with realistic, even though I have nothing against the other styles. Manga would be close second, as long as its well drawn. Especially that the line between realistic and manga is often a bit blurred.
Cartoony and abstract are ok too, but they usualy tend to be more about humour, and I preffer comics with story and stuff.
Plus some realistic/manga comics can be used as art refference. And that's a plus.

One question though, how come furry/antrophomorphic is a style on its own? There are realistic furries, manga-esque furries, looney-tune-esque furries ; ) and abstract furries.

Furry was ment for comics that were specificly about furries, not just comics with a furry character in them. I dunno, I just thought I should throw it in. And I DID put a 'Whatever' option, it just didn't show up on the poll, that's wierd. I'll see if I can add it.

Edit- Apparently, I can't. Damn. Sorry about that. I dunno why it didn't show up.

I know why.
You just entered the text, but forgot to click the "add option" button.
Hitting submit doesn't add it.

Ah, you're probably right. Sorry about that. I ment well. -_- It's the thought that counts, right?

Edit - On a side note:

Augh! I went over 100 posts without realizing it. I wanted to do something special for my 100th. Damn. I'm surprised I've hit it already... I just joined like last week... I guess you guys are just really interesting, or I have no life. ^_^; Anyway... back to the poll.

I was going to vote Furry/Anthropomorphic but then I realised I really don't go for any of the language or novelties involved, I just like the visual style of half humans and that's about it. Then I was going to vote Cartoony but that wouldn't be accurate either, I like my realism concepts just as much (or possibly more) than the next man. Anim

I prefer the American Comic Strip style (simplified), like the early Peanuts, or Calvin and Hobbes. Minimalist, yet it works.

I would have to agree with fi13r.

My own comic is realistic. I do that because a. I draw that way and b. I like it. I like Wapsi Square (simplified) and I like Zebra Girl (which has some furry elements, albiet dark and jaded furry). I like Tales of the Questor which is big eyed toon furry. I grew up with Rocky & Bullwinkle, Looney Toones and every subcategory under that. Disney has yet to release a cartoon that doesn't involve furries of some sort. They're usually sidekicks but still. I like anime and manga. I've been reading that stuff since I started college. I don't think I've really seen an abstract comic.

I don't really have a favorite that I would prefer to the exclusion of the others. If I like it, I'll read it. If I don't, I won't.

I do, however, prefer story comic to gag strips. I get into Mega Tokyo but I link to Penny Arcade chiefly because it's popular. I don't really care for the characters at PA. The "story" sucks but the art is excellent. I won't read sprite comics at all. My mind wanders when I try. And, I have found some comics that I can read about 10 strips worth before my brain siezes.

So, in summary: "Good."

I'm not a big fan of furries, myself - at least, not the manga-esque ones... they just grate on my nerves. Maybe they're too cute?

I'll read just about anything if it has a good story and halfway-decent artwork. (Stick figures and sprites don't cut it for me, but that's about it.) I'm a big fan of well-done greyscale, perhaps more so than CG, but I wouldn't say I have an unhealthy bias.

Of course, comics like Penny Arcade, you don't read for the artwork - they're all about gags. I don't like gag comics as much, but I'll admit that I do wander over to Penny Arcade once in a while.

Blah, blah, blah...

Hmm... well more or less my goal with this was to get people to vote on which comic style they prefer to see in a comic. I wasn't trying to bias anyone against any particular type. I was just kind of asking, 'If you could have your perfect comic, what style would it be in.' I guess. Seems a lot of people don't want to pick one because they don't want to seem elitist. I was just curious what styles people prefer as more pleasurable to view. Not particularly which are the best to read.

Mhh ... I like many styles. Very realistic, well-drawn manga , franco-belgique style or marvel-like style - if the artists match their style, it's allright and I really enjoy good work.

But I think I will always love the one style best I'm grown up with - franco-belgique. :) I know I don't draw exactly like that, but was my main influence over years.

Impossible to say. Once you made the comic, it wouldn't be new anymore. It's the variety that makes comics great for me.

My return question would be, "Okay, what are you wanting to make?"

That might sway our opinions a little.

I'm partial to anime/manga style artwork. Unfortunately, it's rare that I find an anime/manga comic with a plot that doesn't turn me off.

There are several comics out there with beautiful artwork done in this style, but not much else. It's supposed to be funny but it isn't, or it's full of nonsensical artsy emotion, or it doesn't have likeable characters, etc... It seems like the authors are so concentrated on making it "mangaesque" with the artistic style, expressions, and so on that they overlook the fact that the rest of the comic sucks.

I love manga and I'd really like to get behind more manga-style webcomics, but it's very hard to find decent ones.

Realistic style turns me off, and always has. I give all comics a chance if their storylines seem interesting, but I have yet to come across a Realistic style comic that I have actually liked, ever. I may be biased against them, but comics done in that style almost always take themselves way too seriously.

I've never been a huge Furry fan... I can see the appeal to some readers, but it's generally been too cutesy for my tastes. I'm quite glad I gave Jack a chance though... If there are more Furry comics like that around, I might have to look further into the genre.

Cartoony seems to be the default catch-all for webcomic style. Most of the comics I read fall under that category. It's also the least defined as a style... After all, creators just going with their own completely original styles without worrying about making it resemble anything generally works best.

Later...

I like mine, though I still think it needs a lot of improvement. It generally gets described as "like anime, only not". Not exactly the most descriptive description I always thought.

Don't like serious comics? Too bad. On the other hand, mine is not as serious as it might seem.
