I know everyone has their own reasons, and I'm curious to know.
I personally have always been creating my own cartoons since I was young, but I never had the right medium to do it. Even when I thought doing my own web cartoon, I thought it's be really hard. Luckily I stumbled across Keenspace.
I chose to do Heroes 'cause it left me with a lot of freedom to make different stories, and I felt their art style would make it sort of stand out. These guys took almost two years of doodling before i got them right
So, lets hear your stories.
Quattro

------------------

I am a mediochre college level art student(anyone with like aspirations who has been to our site will find this encouraging) I got hooked on comics when I was about 12 years old and have wanted to do nothing but ever since. M.A.C. Studios was founded on two unwavering facts. #1 I have neither the desire nor the ability to do anything usefull in life. and #2 Everybody gets bored. Still. Alot of blood, sweat and beers goes into its production and we(Greg Aikenhead=artist/co-writer, Sean Carter=Webmaster-C/co-writer and Neal Murry=co-writer) are all quite proud of it's progression this season
------------------

I decided to do my webcomic Squadron 509 because I want to be a professional someday and need to get into the habit of deadlines (although right now we're on a short hiatus due to emotional problems) Some people use stories and such to filter out frustrations but I use it to dream and put myself into another more happy world instead of my meaningless one.Well I'm rambling yet again. Those are just my thoughts.
------------------

Oh, I want to be as "hip" as those that said "sex"! OH!
Sex.
With a muffin.
Wow, that was hilarious was it not?
Seriously now, when I was little I loved Garfield and for the longest time I wanted to be a comic strip artist. (My first creation, Trigger, still sticks with me.) Then I wanted to delve into cartoons. I was side tracked by anime for a bit, and I was recently put back into my roots by many new discoveries in cartoons (ie: Invader Zim) and comics (ie: Vasquez and Dirge).
I started Aero Child so I could practice on story, humor, drawing style and formatting, and it has helped quite bit. (Though I am simplistic and shall probably always stay that way, but that's fine, other's have succeeded with much worse.)
Something was started so I could put my revived love for American style back into use, and so I could have something very spastic/morbid/sarcastic to work on. And, again, to help me develop humor and style again, and to a point coloring, though I bite ass and probably will bite ass for as long as I live. (Scribbling is fun!)
Jessica

I've always drawn and made up stories. When I was little I wanted to do cartoons for TV but then I realized that I wouldn't be the one drawing it, it'd be a bunch of other people. Then I wanted to do comic strips, but that had strict deadlines and it was hard to be funny all the time.
So then I tried comic books and childrens books and then novels. I never published anything.
I decided to stick with comic books and I discovered web comics.
I figured the Internet would be the easiest way to show my work to people. I still want to get published some day (I might have I own printing press) and make my own books.
------------------

yeah, I forgot about dreaming. I mean, most of us here seem to have read comics as kids to escape the reality, and most comics are pretty far fetched.
Plus, I do my comic as a means of retaliated on reality. Reality is a great resource for ideas. I mean, how often does realiy screw ya? My way of getting back at him! <IMG SRC="http://www.keenspace.com/forums/smile.g ... attro

------------------

Pretty simple in my case. It's a chance to have some fun with my 3D packages, and it seemed like a good idea at the time.
------------------

I've always liked to draw (you'd never tell by the quality of re-used art at my site right now), and I always loved to write fiction. I really haven't done much of either for the last couple of years, and I wanted to see if the same aspirations that were in me many a year (or eight) ago are still in me now.
I drew a comic for my high school paper about four years ago and began to hate it because I always had to censor it in some way, same went for a lot of the writing I did. Now I just want to let loose, say what I wanna say, and promote my comic till my screams turn to weak whispers. I don't really care if people read my strip or not. I'd really like it if they did, but I know there are hundreds of comics on keenspace alone, and many are much better than mine. I write for the sake of writing, I draw (occasionally) for the sake of drawing. I do it because it is there, and because I can do it. I want to be more than my job, more than my education, more than my relationships, and more than I have let myself be lately.
I know I will never be a great comicbook artist like I wanted to be for years, just like I know I will never learn to play guitar like Hendrix, but I won't let that stop me from trying either. Life is too short to do everything, and too long to do nothing. I guess I'm just trying to do what I can with what I have in regards to my comic and my life...
whew, excuse my rambling
------------------

I thought about teaming up with an artist buddy of mine back in '95 and doing a comic book on the Internet, but we never really got anything off the ground. In fact, I completely forgot I'd had the idea until I was 3 months in to Schlock Mercenary.
Basically, I got hooked on a couple of popular web-comics in January of 2000, and after a little introspection I thought "heck, I can do that." So I bought a couple of cheesy "how to draw comics" books and started teaching myself to draw.
Impatient man that I am (sad, but true, even at the ripening age of 33), I went ahead and threw my "practice" time into the act of actually producing strips for a story, thus submitting my readers to a rather embarrassing "early period" between June and November.
I suppose that in the far-flung future as I look back on this with more than a year under my belt I'll extend the embarrassment of the "early period" through 2003. My art is still far, far weaker than my story, and my coloring is pretty pedestrian.
Enough self-deprecatory remarks, though. I'm having fun, my readers seem happy, and I've made a few bucks. It's working out well, and I plan to keep it up forever. Or until I die. Whichever comes first.
--Howard

For me it's a chance to be creative, and also put down on paper the scifientific, profound, practical, and/or just plain weird thoughts that come to mind, and by doing so making sense of them.
Well there's that and the fact I just like to draw.
------------------

(this is a wonderful question to post on a message board by the way) I used to LOATH comics. Its a funny thing really, I used to have the idea that they were all just big beefy superheroes that consisted of
"99% meat" I wrote stories and drew, but it wasn't until 7th grade when i was thirteen that i finally figured out WOW look I can put pictures with words!
I read the book about the innovations and
future of the comic book industry by Scott McCloud and out of a longing to do something both beautiful and original i started drawing comic book pages to see if i could do it..I sucked...
But after time and practice and a long time studying various layouts by both american and Japanese artists i adopted a mutated style.
I really wanted to work for Disney when i was younger, and i still do very much but I think that may be too lofty a goal until then I can always draw comics ^_^ http://lolm.keenspace.com
