Awkward things you might say as an artist
Just a list of things I've said or thought that have gotten THAT look.
(some with context)
"This butt doesn't look right"
"I think my boobs are a little lopsided"
"Oh men are easier but I hate penises" (discussing life-drawing and overheard)
"That's interesting anatomy"
"I need to warm up or my hand gets stiff"
"I did a marathon session last night now my hand hurts" (responding to a mate asking how the comic's going and again overheard)
"Damn I don't have a rubber" (rubber is Aussie slang for an eraser)
"I prefer small breasts but they're harder to work with" (answering a vendor's question on why I don't draw big tits)
"It's easier to start naked, then dress them up" (same conversation as above on if I'm drawing a nudie pic)
"I've done some nude work but not often"
"Stop touching my pens" (said with a mouthful of food so one keyword was misheard)
"I mostly do teenagers" (discussing the ages of my characters)

Me? saying dirty double-entendres on purpose? Who do you think I am, Cornpone or something?McDuffies wrote:I think you're saying those things on purpose.

I usually draw in the darkened cave of my own room, so I rarely get to say awkward things to people. Something that does happen, though, is I'll draw a picture and not realize until it's beyond saving that there's some subtle suggestions in the artwork. Or, more frequently, every speech bubble I draw ends up looking like a twig and berries. Why must so many of my dialogue balloons have ballsacks?
(i just went back to look to see if i could find prime ballsack examples to share. it was actually quite hard for me to find them, i guess they pop up less frequently than i think)

Nah, I never have anyone around when I'm working on the strip, so the best I could contribute would be various comments to the dog to stop trying to jump on my lap, bury his chew toy under the desk, or attempt to get me to play 'that game where I run around barking and you get frustrated'.
I did end up with a cloud or something like that which looked suspiciously anatomical... thank you, Speech Bubble, for covering that slip!

Re: Awkward things you might say as an artist
I'm nearly always at home and by myself in my office/man cave when I'm drawing. Even those few times I work on artwork at work I'm by myself. However, once or twice I've been working when someone's happened by. In a way, I actually would welcome them asking me what I was doing, so I could show 'em. Course, part of me is also a little hesitant to do so, too, lest I get that "Oh, so you're one of *those* people (i.e. furries), eh?" look. I've already had a conversation with one of the guys explaining the difference between anthro art and furry art.

I usually don't comment my own "art". But I'm always the first one to go THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!! in this sort of situation.

Neither do I really, but the more that people know I do this stuff the more questions I get asked (especially at work 'cause I draw between customers in the morning) and it's kind of rude not to answer.Mastermind wrote:I usually don't comment my own "art".
Also I have a tendency to think out loud when I forget people are around.

And when they're hard, it takes a long time to finish them. Can get tiring for the hands. You might go through several rubbers before you're done with one.Mo wrote:Yeah, they can be hard...RobboAKAscooby wrote:"Oh men are easier but I hate penises"

That's why I avoid doing it in public (aw crap, I walked right into this one). People ask questions that seem simple to them and one-sentence answers always end up awkward.RobboAKAscooby wrote:Neither do I really, but the more that people know I do this stuff the more questions I get asked (especially at work 'cause I draw between customers in the morning) and it's kind of rude not to answer.Mastermind wrote:I usually don't comment my own "art".

but.. but... drawing in public is a great device to chat up the ladies. Or to look like a creepy lookie-lou.

I can't remember the last time I drew in public.
I don't know what you people are talking about.VeryCuddlyCornpone wrote:And when they're hard, it takes a long time to finish them. Can get tiring for the hands. That's just was we call them here, I don't even think its slang.RobboAKAscooby wrote:"Damn I don't have a rubber" (rubber is Aussie slang for an eraser)
Though the phrase "Heeere's Jonny!" has its own double-entendre to make up for it.
Aw, I haven't played that game in years. Kinda miss it now.Mastermind wrote:I usually don't comment my own "art". But I'm always the first one to go THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!! in this sort of situation.
*Sits drawing people in a park* *Girl comes up to me* "Hey. Were you just drawing me?" "Yeah" "Can I see?" "Sure" *Shows her the picture* "Why do I look fat!?"Phact0rri wrote:but.. but... drawing in public is a great device to chat up the ladies. Or to look like a creepy lookie-lou.
And that is why I don't draw in public. I really should work on not making people look fat, or old.

The rare times I was noticed to draw people, I never was seen as a creepy person. However, there was a few who asked me to give them the sketch afterward.Phact0rri wrote:but.. but... drawing in public is a great device to chat up the ladies. Or to look like a creepy lookie-lou.
