Think I should Change Hosting?

Post by lightbulbs »

I've been waiting on a coding question for over a month now. In it's thread it's gone unanswered, in a PM sent to tech support it's sat unread for come tomorrow will make a month. While the answer is pain as day to experienced coders, it isn't to me and there is a refusal to break down the coding into understandable terms. Because of this I'm thinking about changing my comic's hosting. Does any one know of another free hosting company that does automatic updating?

No yank about offline stuff. Almost a month with minus one day is plenty of time.

That's really up for you to decide.

This is a really small community. The active base is really tiny, as you've surely noticed. You can't always count on somebody being able to answer a specific question. It's unfortunate, yeah, but that's how it is around here. Most of the old guard have moved on and haven't returned.

And if you're talking about the Disqus thread, it may be that no one is able to phrase their responses any differently in a way that would be helpful to you.

There's plenty of free blogs, and stuff like that you can go to. there's free PHP sites where you can make/use your own updating script but you will run into the same problem with free services. This is volunteer work, and no one is holding you to use the services, or will be all that depressed if you use another site. Many people in this community don't use the web hosting provided.

I also have replied. Probably repeating what everyone has said in a reworded (and probably more confusing if I know me) manner.

But like the others have said, most of the active crew on here aren't technical wizards so if you start asking specific questions your not going to get tons of replies.

Too bad the wiki lies about the forums and when you join you're not prepared that help center is on life support. I don't do any fancy coding and I like the freedom of design so I returned here with my new comic. You picked a tricky issue and so the worst flaw of CG came out.
To be honest, when I look at some comics' page comments I don't get the point of it. Everyone just says which panel or expression they like best or goes "oh my what happens next" and it probably adds work with trolls and spam. BUT of course there is Achewood, where comments multiply hilarity on every page.
If it's really important to you, maybe try and contact the user who got that code to work but if you decide to switch services, leave your CG page as a mirror just in case.

I actually work IT for a living-- but like most people who use to be around more, my life has gotten busy to the point, that I mostly check this forum when I'm not doing anything at work. and I RARELY go to the help forums. I really should.

Now I would love to find a hosting site that offers free coding help-- as I don't know if I've ever seen that outside of this place. You should hit google with your coding question, that's what I do when I program myself into a hole.

also could you link said thread, or send me a PM. as i see two Threads in help under you, both which Cuddly helped you out on. so I'm a little confused.

I've been a little hard on CG but one thing I do like about it over many of the other hosts is the web 1.0 interface that doesn't go totally bananas if you failed to download last night's Firefox beta. It's just kind of a shame that it's all over the place as far as what directions work for what part. Once you get into a specific routine, I guess it works well enough.

Anyway, look, for $70 a year you can have your own domain and plenty of storage. Spend another $50 for a book to learn PHP or read the PHP manual online for free. You can do a simple comics manager/navigator in under 100 lines of code; add-ons like a comments board or timed releases are more complicated but not impossible.

The only reason I can see to use any free comics hosting in 2011 is if you need templating help or, barring that, a community to draw an audience from.

I'll stick with my personal reason - laziness.

Seriously I have neither the time nor inclination to learn the coding.
I've no problems with the CG setup, sure adding comments would be nice but now it's easy to add facebook comments and just about everyone has facebook pages for promoting their projects (which I'll do when I get the free time).

I'm poor. That's my reason. I've no idea how much it would cost to have my own domain but until RTP itself is generating the money to pay for it I'm not going to want to spend money on hosting.

You got a reply from red wolf and kisai. That's more then most people get, yet you still cry about no one helping you?

I gave up helping people in the help center. It was too frustrating.

Huh... totally thought I posted again in this thread :eyebrow:

But yeah, there's a million free places to host. I too am not well moneyed, and the money I do budget toward comics gets spent on markers and paper (so techincally I guess I'm making myself poor by not switching ot didgital art, but whatever)

I'm curious as to whether OP will return to this thread.

No, Opie, not you!

But that goes only if you're already somewhat savvy in html and programming in general. For those who haven't programmed before, php is likely equal to foreign language. Free hosting like CG is most useful for people who only want to use it to display art with minimal effort in other areas.

To be honest, that's not much of an excuse. Summoning administrators shouldn't be an occurrence equal to a small miracle.

Yes. SmackJeeves and Webcomic Nation have their free packages and Drunk Duck now works under the name of The Duck Webcomics. And every free blog site powered by Wordpress should also be usable for webcomic archives.

I need to look into that as well. I figured more places only brings more readers.

Lightbulbs, have you tried OnlineComics.net?
