Sum up your characters in one word

Post by VinnieD »

It's a simple experiment in characterization. Take some characters from your comic and give one word that expresses the character as best as possible.

Some of mine.

Pooky: Lost
Hannibal: Trustworthy
Penelope: Warm
Piago: Free
Nailbat: Hero
Penny: Curious
Petunia: Protective
Mulligan: Hardboiled
Malphas: Megalomaniac
Wesson: Ruthless
Knell: Tragic
Doc: Unyielding
Prof Od.: Mentor
Dee: idealist
Darkness; False
Runo: Loyal
Juju: Mischievious
Euclid: Idiot
Alice: Mysterious

They don't necessarily have to be adjectives. nouns, verbs, pretty much any word as long as its an expression of that character.

Casper: Unassuming
Cody: Loyal
Wendy: Displaced
Grace: Protective
Brylcreem: Patient

Mavis: Unstable
Chastity: Self-assured
Liberty: Follower
Pandora: Reserved
Old Bill: Mentor
The Soldier: Private
Fos: Lonely
Jackson: Genuine
Didj: Proud

*That was trickier than I expected. I'm still not certain I got them all right, too! :)

This is a great exercise when you are trying to pin down your characters. A while ago I did a similar thing where I listed one positive trait and then one negative trait, and another listing the way the character perceives him/herself, and the way another character perceives him/her.

Let's see...

Aggie: Impatient
Clarabelle: Optimistic
Joseph: Determined
Ulysses: Pensive
Tony: Hopeful
Eddie: Reserved
Marie: Stubborn
Cecilia: Resigned

Of course, it's generally not a good plan to base a character entirely around one trait, but it is helpful to have some main roots to return to/subvert from time to time when writing. Characters sometimes drift and get into a nebulous zone of too much going on, or become too Flanderized and one-dimensional. Exercises like these can help if you feel that you're losing touch with your characters, and if you save your answers from year to year, it is interesting to see how characters evolve.

This is rather tough. I avoid characters that can be defined by a few traits. But here goes.

Shannon: tomboy
K'lara: innocent
Erika: anarchist
Trisha: fluttershy
Shoo: Canadian
Diohm: gentlemen
Mendila: deep
Janet: sporty

My characters aren't one-dimensional. I tried, but it doesn't translate very well in a visual medium.
