Awkward Bug Bites?

Obviously, it's peak Summer time and bugs are out there frolicking like the dickens! Naturally, bug bites come hand in hand with this. But sometimes, you get those irritating sons of bitches in the most annoying, and sometimes awkward of places.

Take me for example. I have one so close to my thumb nail that I don't know what to do with it. Coincidentally, I also have another one just as close to my big-toe nail. I also have another one on the sole of my foot! I mean, how does that even happen? Can they bite through my socks? I do wear thin socks though... but still! And then I also have a big one, right on my bone, where the tibia meets your foot.

I once had one behind my knee cap.

I hope I'll never get one in my ear. That's gonna kill me!

I read recently that mosquitos love the smell of feet, so that's why you might get a lot more bites in that area of the body. Now that I think about it, my friends with smellier feet do tend to have more bug bites than I do.

I had 6 horribly itchy mosquito bites on my sole once (and my feet don't smell). Now I use tea tree oil as a repellant and keep rose geraniums in my room so nothing bites me anymore.

Well everyone has a scent even if its mild and not that noticeable. Feet especially with socks and stuff do sweat, your skin has to breathe! Thats to say it might not be a very noticeable odor but its there. I'd also be one that it might actually be the moisture of feet that draws Mosquitoes more than the smell.

Yes, I know how human physiology works. I meant they don't smell, as in badly. I could stick a toe up my nose and nothing and some people really have a problem. My uncle attracts flies when he takes his shoes off.

True Story, when I was seven years old, my friend came over and we made a tent either in my room or outside and were playing in it, but she took her shoes off and her feet smelled so bad that I told her I had to go eat lunch and that we couldn't play anymore.

I'm not one of the people in the world who hates feet, but I HATE foot smell. I have a very sensitive nose and often can pick up on things that others around me don't notice at all, which is cool and superpowersy sometimes, but all too often it is a curse rather than a blessing. I'm much more mindful of different body odors, for example. Sometimes I wish I couldn't smell people's scalps, that's a particularly icky one.

And no, mosquitos should not have better noses, if they did they'd be able to smell you from further away. They shouldn't have any smell sensory at all, I say.

I use my girlfriend as a mosquito protection. All mosquitos always attack her instead of me, it's kind of fenomenon.
I'm gonna tell her that she has smellier feet than I do.

It's tough to describe. Basically, your scalp produces oils that keep your hair healthy, which is how people's hair seems greasy or oily if they haven't washed it in a while. The smell might be found on the inside of a hat if somebody's been wearing it a long time.

The best comparison I guess is that I would describe feet as having kind of a pinchy, pungent smell that you notice right away. Same thing (for me at least) when it comes to scalp smell. Like this pinchy, musty odor.

It's not there all the time, usually only if the person has been sweating a lot or hasn't washed their hair in a while (or washed but didn't pay much attention to the scalp). And I don't notice it unless the person is really close (unless it's extra stanky).

For me greasy hair smells like castor oil with a hint of vinegar. Feet smell like buttered popcorn. VeryCuddlyCornpone can you smell freshly tanned people from a distance too? I can't describe that though, but it's not unpleasant.

Maybe it's cause I'm a guy, or maybe it's because I've literally been required to go over a week without showering on multiple occasions (whilst engaged in quite a fair bit of sweat inducing activities) that I just don't notice body smells unless it's REALLY bad. And even then I can generally put up with it.

You'd be surprised though what can be accomplished by baby wipes when it comes to hygiene. Also, mosquitos are attracted to sweat and body heat. Because your feet are a high sweat zone (a by-product of which can be smelly feet) they will be drawn to that area. Also also, you generally have thinner skin in some areas there so its easier for them to get to blood vessels. I've had to deal with some horrible mosquito bites, particularly when I was at Fort Lewis, WA where the damn things just SWARM you. I was using mosquito netting, repellant, whatever I could think of. If it did any good I wouldn't know because my legs were covered with bites so bad that I had to verbally tell myself not to scratch.

And that's why I now take a tube of hydrocortisone to the field and when camping.

Oh that's a great way to describe it!!! Definitely that weird vinegary scent. I can't smell freshly tanned people, but I have noticed that my skin does smell a bit different after I've been out in the sun for a while, probably due to the chemical reactions going on in the skin layer. It's one of those smells that I've never NOTICED that I've noticed until you pointed it out.

Also the taste of pepto bismol has always reminded me of root beer, only not caffeinated and much creamier.

That makes a lot of sense. I imagine if it was something that I had been exposed to more often I wouldn't notice it as much and probably wouldn't be bothered as much either. I think another part of it though is that I have a stronger sense of smell than many of the people I've discussed this with, and also more sensitive taste (which makes me embarassingly picky when it comes to food ). AND I have a lot of associations with smells, so things that never used to bother me may invoke a stronger reaction if I have a bad experience associated with one.

My boyfriend's dad's remedy is to take a cloth soaked in really hot (maybe boiling, I forget) water and slap it on the bite for a second or two. It obviously hurts like fuck but after that I guess it just deactivates the itchiness. (And not in the sense of your bite area just hurts so much that you don't feel anything else, I think it actually does something to numb it)

Related to smells, I have found recently that I rather like the smell of Lanacane and hydrocortisone cream, because even though I should associate them with having itchy awful bug bites, they remind me of summers being with my family down the shore

Me too.
I do hate the smell of other people's rooms though. I never smell rooms in which I live, but as a child I hesitated to spend the night or even dine in other people's houses because I didn't like the smell of other people's living spaces.
