Re: Get Ya Freak On.
You prolly some songs from Moloko, only you don't know it's them. They were everywhere in their heyday, there were times when I couldn't flip programs on tv without hearing "Sing it back".
I've heard new R.E.M. today. I'm not impressed, it seems like they don't intend to expand their musical palette, only to drain the one they've already got. They seem to be in a kind of "Phil Collins" phase, though well deserved, and there's a few likeable songs in there anyways.
I've heard new Moby too, and was kinda dissapointed. I take Moby for innovator who goes a step further in pop-techno fusion with every new release, but this one seemed very generic. Using smaples/found objects as instruments for pop songs is a great idea, but once you master it things become easy because originality is in picking up obscure samples from around. When he uses audience cheer to simulate stage feeling and later you realise that the same audience clip is repeating over and over, it's a nice gag and you get a chuckle... but I don't see a concept around which the songs are built and clips chosen, which was the case with earlier albums, or so I imagined. Plus I like when Moby himself sings, and he does it rarely here.

Ha, I think the Moby songs I like the most are where the samples do the singing. Though now that I think about it Porcelain is pretty awesome.
I like the new REM single. Haven't heard the album. The single isn't groundbreaking, but it's got energy, something we haven't gotten from these guys in a while.
What can you Canadians tell me about You Say Party!! We Say Die!!! Other than that they have a great bandname.

I agree with this statement. I also found myself liking that 'we are all made of stars' track.. despite its over use in popular media.Yeahduff wrote:Ha, I think the Moby songs I like the most are where the samples do the singing. Though now that I think about it Porcelain is pretty awesome.

It can be difficult, but I try not to let popular media ruin songs for me. I still like "Such Great Heights" despite the association with UPS now.

Makes me think of how Outback Steakhouse stole "Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games." Asshats.

Hah. We don't have those restaurants around here, so I can just sit back and chuckle about it, reworked lyrics and all. Incidentally, I kind of prefer The Sunlandic Twins to Satanic Panic in the Attic, which puts me at odds with basically everyone.Jesusabdullah wrote:Makes me think of how Outback Steakhouse stole "Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games." Also, sadly, I have nothing to say about YSPWSD. Maybe I should give them a listen.

Re: Get Ya Freak On.
I was in this hipster type restaurant last month when that song came on. My brother's like, "I know I've heard this song before."
I'd be pretty pissed about it if I were an Of Montreal fan. I'm at peace with songs in commercials, but altering a song for a commercial is another matter. (The savvy spacer will notice echoes from another thread.)
This is the We Say Die song I've been hearing on M2. Sublet will say I like it because the girl in the video is cute, but this song was in my head the entire day after I heard it and I didn't mind at all. I may just have to bite the bullet and cough up ten bucks.

Re: Get Ya Freak On.
The thing is, I consider myself a huge of Montreal fan, and I still don't especially mind -- particularly if it means that someday, someone will ask "Who did that song in the Outback commercial?", investigate, and maybe become another supporter. I would be indignant if a business just stole a song from my favourite band and altered the lyrics in order to sell crappy food, but Outback did it with permission. Who am I to get upset if they seize an opportunity to make more money, especially when so many "fans" don't bother to even buy albums? (Terrible confession: I only legitimately own the last three, and that's in spite of the fact that I really, really love The Bedside Drama.)Yeahduff wrote:I was in this hipster type restaurant last month when that song came on. edit: Terrible confession 2: I cannot get into anything by Stars that comes before Set Yourself on Fire.

Yes, yes it is. Maybe that's why. (Which is not to say I don't love their newest album, although it's not as consistently good.)

Re: Get Ya Freak On.
I'm really really bad at keeping up with music. I've heard songs for the first time ten years after they were popular. True story! So yeah, "Wraith Pinned to the Mist" is a total anomaly there.
The WSPYSD song was kinda cool. It got stuck in my head too for a while, but somehow replaced it with "Re: Your Brains."

Well, songs where he reworks old blues and gospel songs are probably the most groundbreaking stuff he did. I just like his voice and lyrics, and he's got a hinch for pop melody.Phact0rri wrote:I agree with this statement. I've listened to "Vampire weekend". They're kind of irritating and cool at the same time, like if a music box tried to make a rock album...
And yeah, new REM is energetic, lots of fast songs.

Re: Get Ya Freak On.
it is kinda cool when you got tv on and you hear some riffs and your like heeeeyyyy... cool. I guess my only thing is when the band has no say and the label takes the initiative to license a song for a product the band might not want to support.
I know I'd be angry if some proctor and gamble ad licensed a song of mine (not like that'd ever happen but still)

Yes, if they didn't have a choice, that's a different case altogether. I'm almost positive the Outback one, at least, was a case of a drugged-up Kevin Barnes thinking it would be super-cool to have a song in a steakhouse commercial.

Re: Get Ya Freak On.
See, I don't begrudge him for doing an ad, and I would've accepted if he gave them an existing song. But taking an existing song and making it about some corporation just really irritates me. Seems that anything that's made is just sitting around waiting to be put in an ad, but this is well covered ground. I guess on the bright side this hasn't stopped him from performing nude.
Awful confession: I know very little Stars that isn't Set Yourself On Fire.
