The sad fact is that it's scientificly plausible to shoot knives.
By sculpting the handle of the knife so it just barely fits into the barrel and using slug-less bullets (Flash bulets. It's what they use in the movies. They have gunpowder, but no head.) you can fire it and the force of explosion should be enough to propel the knife twenty to thirty feet.

This is how Brandon Lee died, except it wasn't a knife's handle lodged in the barrel, but rather an actual bullet.

So it wan't a flash bullet, as much as an old-fashioned bullet.....

Actually, both were used, except the regular bullets and gun (Appearing in the pawn shop scene and one of the gun fights) had their gunpowder remove. All but one...

What happened was there was just enough gunpowder left in it to shoot the bullet up into the barrel and lodge it there (Bullets are slightly larger but much more malleable than the barrel of a gun, which is why a gun leaves its traceable "signature" on a bullet, which is how detectives trace guns in murders and shootings). When a gun was called in for the scene when Crow was supposed to shoot himself this same gun was brought in. Using the flashcaps, the force of the explosion brought the pressures a regular bullet would experience, thus propelling the lodged bullet up and out at the same rate a real bullet would.
