sounds like things I couldn't imagine-- guess most people couldn't unless they were there.McDuffies wrote:When I was visiting my home back during the war, it was several kilometers from the front line so lost bullets or grenades were not unheard of, every local village psycho was armed and dangerous and there were a lot of armed robbers, so threat was constant, though usually not immediate, more like lingering in the air, you know, constantly covering windows, using only rooms that look away from the street, not leaving the yard unsupervised, not talking to strange men and all that... Most of direct threats fell on my parent's back and they did a lot to shelter us from it.
I also took my high school graduation exams under the bombing, but I never felt like I was in any immediate danger.
I suppose I was sort of lucky when it comes to that. Like, several years ago, due to my father's involvement in politics, his opponent arranged for a bomb to be thrown in our backyard. Noone was hurt, but they were scared a lot, I was away at the time so I heard about it only a few days later. Years earlier than that, my father was attacked by an insane sympathizer by the oposing party at a footbal game, barely escaping. Earlier that evening he offered me to go to a game, but I didn't feel like going. So I guess I have a plenty of luck in not being at the place of the life-threatening situation.

Re: I almost died today
I see shit like that every time I go outside on a mission. I hate driving anywhere that takes me even close to settlements because its just the most depressing, third world conditions. Violence still is a big problem on a local level, and the police and Army are too busy just trying to keep the checkpoints clear. The trash, the disrepair, the corruption, it's everywhere.
Things have gotten better over here, but I'm safe behind inches of plate armor and bullet proof glass with machine gun equipped vehicles escorting me. There are people on the road driving in mini-vans, and I'm worried that I'm going to watch one of them get blown up right in front of my eyes and be able to do nothing about it.

Re: I almost died today
I think we did have a good score considering the circumstances. Noone of people close to me died, we managed to save enough of our property to start anew. A lot of it thanks to my father who anticipated many things. For instance, though he had an officer rank, he arranged to serve as regular artillery soldier instead, which was a good move since most of officers from my hometown garnizon were trialed for command responsibility in war crimes (my hometown is now considered second worst case of genocide in Bosnia). But like I said, we kids were sheltered as much as we could have been.Phact0rri wrote:well thats not the sort of thing you shouldn't ever say.. cause its so true.
