Honestly, I don't think the tv show version of the Boondocks will work out. The animation, in my opinion, is trying too hard to be anime/american. I don't know. That's just me. Also, the themes of Boondocks makes better sense as a newspaper strip than it might as a cartoon. I mean seriously. If the show makes too much of an emphasis on being controversial, ie racism and "Bush Sucks" talk, the show might definately flop.Jen_Babcock wrote:I'm not sure how well it will translate into a TV show though.
I think it should air on Sunday, with AS's comedy block, instead of Saturday, with the anime and stuff. That way, its content will match the overall theme of the Sunday Block.

The comic strip itself isn't very lively either. Most of the strips consists of the TV talking to the characters, and maybe the characters talking back to the TV. I'm sure this will not be the case for the tv show, but if it remains as politically charged as it is it may not do so well. I'm hoping that he's fleshed out his characters more for the show, as they usually only come off as extensions of McGruder's own voice in the strip.

When it's not Political it's okay, but honestly it's soooo far left wing that I just can't see eye to eye with it.
I lost all respect for the creator last year when he basically used the comic as a campaign against Republicans.
I'm sure the cartoon will be more of the same only even MORE irritating because there will be voices.

Why would that be a problem? Republicans are EVIL.
... Sorry.
I agree that this will appeal to a limited audience, and that's why it won't work. As a rule, newspaper is often a rather liberal medium, so newspaper comics can get away with trashing the system. TV is much more conservative, and a TV show that doesn't appeal to, or downright offends, the majority just won't get good viewership.

Boondocks ain't my thing, really. I don't think they're risking anything by having a cartoon with it's viewpoints on CN though. Call me crazy, but I think there's probably more viewers of CN leaning away from Bush rather than towards. I suspect there'd be more controversy if it was on in the afternoon instead of late at night.

Sorry for what? Having an opinion? I'm more of the mind that politicians as a whole are selfish and lazy. However the alternative is rather unpleasant. As to the Boondocks, I don't care for political comics in general. Just more stuff for people to get mad and fight about.Black Sparrow wrote:Why would that be a problem? Republicans are EVIL.

I do like Boondocks, but none of my local papers run it, so I rarely get to read it. I do find the heavy use of political...ness to be off-putting, but it is funny, so I'm able to like it.
As for the show, I saw that same add you did Subhuman. And, while I thought the add was stupid, the idea of Boondocks being made into a show piqued my interest. Though deep down inside I know that, like most newspaper comics made into TV shows, it will more than likely suck (accept Garfield and Friends. Garfield and Friends kicked ass), I am really hoping it wont.

I like Boondocks on most occasions. Its a good political/pop culture satire cartoon, usually hit or miss with its jokes. I read the comic a little when it first came out years ago, fell off of it, then got back into it when it began appearing in my local newspaper 2 years ago.
Back when it first started, it had some minor character development and plots, but it stopped when the characters reached their current limited personalities. It felt like McGruder only wanted character development so he could get everyone used to the characters personalities, then once that phase was done, he could just have them tell jokes/comments forever with little plot/development. He only has plots or continuity when there's a message, like his recent "Hurricane Katrina survivors" story when Huey's distant from New Orleans crash his Granddad's house. There's nothing wrong with that I suppose, but I feel Boondocks could do a lot better from that model.
As for the TV series, I'll have to see it to pass judgement. I'll be interested to see how the characters come out, because they're forced to have more personality than they portray in the comic strip. It'll be like meeting the real characters for the first time.
One more thing, I hope the depressing mood of the comic strip doesn't translate to the show. The comics have a depressing feel to them, because of the overall color scheme of browns and other washed out looking colors. The only thing is that the comics aren't that depressing to begin with, so it could a little lighter color scheme.

Actually, it was 9/11 that threw the strip off the creative rails. Before then, as noted, there were ongoing plots and a fairly wide cast of characters. Then came the attacks, and BushCo's response to them. McGruder's anger got the better of him, and the strip rapidly deteriorated into the Huey N' Caeser Rant-A-Lot Show, with occasional guest shots by Grandpa and Riley. (Almost as bad as Mallard Fillmore!) Only in the last few months has McGruder finally started to regain some of his footing. I also have to express disgust at McGruder's practice of hiring other people to do the drawing on the strip, while he is "busy" speechifying and cutting deals in Hollywood. Still, I occasionally read the strip, and will probably check out the TV version.Dark Spider wrote:I like Boondocks on most occasions. I didn't notice if anyone posted this already, but for those who haven't read the strip, you can see it here.
And I've also read a few Footrot Flats strips, and enjoyed them.
