Black or white (or anyother color I guess)

Post by SergeXIII »

What color do use for the background for your cells ie. the "empty space"?

I always go with black. I dunno, dark colors there kinda make me feel like the cells are more so connected then when I see bright ones.

I feel Brian Clevenger's 8-Bit Theater does this the best.

What do you guys/gals use?

White

If you've ever been to ND, you'll know it's NOTHING but white in the winter.

White if it's daytime, black if it's night.

Yeee-up, that's chromatic complexity for you.

White for my BW comic, whatever the colour of the nearest wall is for my coloured one (like if the walls are blue some panels will have that blue as a back and nothing else, like the wall consumed the entire background).

I use black, though I might switch to dark green. It helps the comic fit with my site design. I'd make it transparent, but the font I use for lettering is anti-aliased.

Heh, I use white cause otherwise I'd have to use Photoshop to erase around *everything* (b&w scans).

Though, if I had a choice, I'd probably pick a darker color. They give a kind of blending sense, or something like that.

For the spaces in between panels? White...more out of laziness than any artistic choice...one less thing I have to fill in.

Black, but that's more because it covers up the fact that I can't draw good panels.

White...it is easier on my eyes... and because, someday, I will make some prints of it, if just for my own enjoyment (always finding ways of saving resources...I sometimes print some pages at home for my relatives. If I used black or colour between the panels I would spend so much ink  ).

I do it in the background color of the particular story we're in. Each of the stories on my site has a different color.

The sky, depending on time, season, weather and mood. That, or I have one open panel and continue bg into the empty space.

White or crosshatching. I try to get a backround into every panel though. Comics without backrounds just look so goddamn bland.

GO FLOATING IN VOID! WOO!
Caught in the headlamp glare of your own blinding vanity/Mesmerised by the stare of your shallow personality
Gorging the junk food of flattery you drag your fat ego around/Everyone floored by the battering you give to whoever's around
Oh Narcissus you petulant child admiring yourself in the curve of my eyes/Oh Narcissus you angel beguiled unsated by self you do nothing but die

I have backgrounds on my comics whenever possible. For panel dividers I use black unless the background is very dark.

Usually my panels are separated by black, occassionally I experiment with other things like one open panel, insets, gradients, etc. The panels themselves have backgrounds obviously (though that wasn't the question).

Space around frames? White, usually.
Black is used when you want a dark, grim page. My problem with black is, it tends to make a mess when content of frames is black too, so you're not sure where the border of the frame is supposed to be. Strange, noone thought of making white borders on pages with black background.
I've also seen yellowish colour for comics that mimic some old, golden-age comics "Flick". I don't remember seeing any other colour used.
Thinking about it, colours like red or yellow would be too distracting. Imagine a screeming red wallpaper, you wouldn't enjoy sitting in that room, eh? Light blue would probably work, or any other light shade of colour.
