Good enough?

Post by Dburkhead »

Hi. New here.

I had been considering doing a webcomic for some time but didn't think I was "good enough." There was always something I wanted to brush up on, a portion of my artwork I wanted to improve to get "ready."

I finally realized I was doing what we call in writing "waxing the cat" ("I'll get to that story right after I wax the cat"). So instead of worrying about whether or not I'm "good enough" I figure it's best to just do it. It'll go or it won't. And I can expect that if I keep working at it, I'll get better.

Just do it.

Even if you do suck, your really not going to get better until you start trying anyways. Win-Win situation, plain and simple.

Excellent idea. Best way to get better, anyway, is to just DO it.

We're an active forum here. I don't think I have ever seen a time when there aren't at least 5-6 logged in users. Other times it'll jump as high as 40-50.

I'm not sure but this might be in the wrong forum though. Might be better suited for the techniques + tricks one. Not sure though, the topic seems to stradle the lines. A Mod might decide later, but no worries.

Such is the power of the forum!
Another one of its powers is forcing you to join in comic jams, thus increasing your skill and siphoning time away from real life.

Welcome to keenspace.

Half of us suck.

Half of us are good.

Then there's Faub and Mr. Bob.

I thought about posting it in Techniques and Tricks, but the comment was more about philosophy than about technique.

well, i think it's time to put on some pants, because at work they lectured me about not wearing a tie, so I don't think they'd like it if I showed up with no pants on

Well i looked a bit at your site, and i see you have art classes under you belt (unlike many of us). From what i've seen i'd say you're certainly "good enough" to start.
I guess it also depes on what are your amibitions (if any) with this thing...

Your art might improve with time (as i hope mine will - i give it two years to shape up  ). But i think it's more likely that you'll learn more about things specific to webcomics, about how you should write your story, how to do the page layout for best effect, working with computer tools for coloring & all that (if you plan to do that), etc.. And most of this is best learned from experience.
(ofc i know close to nothing about any of these things either - but i hope to learn)

Dburkhead, your art is good enough, honestly. From perusing your website, you definitely have the talent. The question is whether or not you draw *fast* enough to meet your chosen update schedule. If you're worried about that, choose to update only once a week or so. Fit a schedule that works for you.

The best thing about doing a webcomic, I have found, is that you learn to turn off your internal editor -- the piece of you that keeps saying, 'That isn't good enough'. You have to get *something* on the page by the deadline. Don't worry about how good it is, just do it. With practice your quick drawings will become as good as the ones you spent weeks polishing and slaving over. That's the theory, anyway. :) Best of luck!

I say that you are good, and your practicing figure drawings is a definate sign that you will continue to improve. :D

Go for it, talent is for people like Soap, FAUB or Bob. The rest of us just make do however we can :P .
Faith is what credulity becomes when it finally achieves escape velocity from the constraints of terrestrial discourse- reasonableness, internal coherence, civility, and candor. Thus, the men who commited the atrocities of September 11 were neither cowards nor lunatics of any sort, but Men of Faith- perfect faith- and this, it must finally be acknowleged, is a terrible thing to be.

Don't worry about it, just browse the new submissions a few times and you'll get a whole new feeling of confidence in your work.

Either that, or you'd get to know suicide a whole lot more personally.

You got the touch
You got the power
After all is said and done
You've never walked, you've never run,
You're a winner
You got the moves, you know the streets
Break the rules, take the heat
You're nobody's fool
You're at your best when when the goin' gets rough
You've been put to the test, but it's never enough
You got the touch
You got the power
When all hell's breakin' loose
You'll be riding the eye of the storm
You got the heart
You got the motion
You know that when things get too tough
You got the touch
You never bend, you never break
You seem to know just what it takes
You're a fighter
It's in the blood, it's in the will
It's in the mighty hands of steel
When you're standin' your ground
And you never get hit when your back's to the wall
Gonna fight to the end and you're takin' it all
You got the touch
You got the power
When all hell's breakin' loose
You'll be riding the eye of the storm
You got the heart
You got the motion
You know that when things get too tough
You got the touch
You're fightin' fire with fire
You know you got the touch
You're at your best when when the road gets rough
You've been put to the test, but it's never enough
You got the touch
You got the power
You got the touch
You got the power
