Not really. As far as math rock goes, Don Cabalero is one of bigger names; a long-lasting, influential band. Helmet isn't unknown either.

They're well known bands if you listen to a certain genre. Mostly Don Cabalero.
Anyways... supergroup status seems to rely on a band name and not musician's name. Satriani and Sammy Hagar aside, why would I care what RHCP drummer is doing, even if I was listening to RHCP? He's, like, the least known member of the band, he's certainly not Keith Moon, for what it's worth they could have gotten any drummer. Blind Faith or CSN&Y were supergroups in real sence of the world because most of their members were hugely popular, and today Raconteurs might be a supergroup because both White and Benson are established on their own, but most of those groups members that aren't exactly the major creative force of their bands. It's more an indication that if you play in a popular band, it's easier to meet with people who are also in popular bands than with unknowns.

But SGM are wonderful!

To me personally musicians wouldn't have to be popular names, but they'd have to have a distinguishable playing style. Like if there was one actual superstar you might as well say that it's just his new band. But if he teamed up with, I dunno, Mike Garson, Graham Coxon or Brian Viglione, you'd want to hear that combination because those musicians have reckognizable styles even to people who aren't afficionados of particular instrument.

"Modern Guilt" by Beck: Some of his early albums from the 1990s were pretty sophomoric , but starting with "Sea Change" IMO he became one of the few musicians who get progressively better over time. "Sea Change" is pretty awesome too.

"Boxer" by The National: Listen to the songs "Fake Empire" and "Mistaken for Strangers" on YouTube. Like a less Joy Division-inspired version of Interpol.

"Fist of God" by MSTRKRFT. If you can't wait any longer for the next Daft Punk or Justice album, they can be your musical nicotine patch.

"I Created Disco" by Calvin Harris. Techno Brit Pop at its finest. Best songs: "Acceptable in the '80s", "The Girls", "Merrymaking at My House"

The other day while I was reorganizing my iTunes during an OCD trip I came up with what I think are the ten best albums ever recorded:

I actually think the oposite, stroke from Odelay to See Change is great, with Mindite Vultures and Sea Change among some of my favourite albums. It's stuff after that that I wasn't very impressed with, starting with Guero which I thought was trying to imitate Odelay almost song by song. New albums, I feel like they're "Beck routinely doing Beck stuff" and I grew to expect him to be unpredictable and fresh.

Speaking of The National, their recent album "High Violet" is quite good. Liked it more than "Boxer" anyway, though still figuring out if I enjoy it more than "Alligator."

Speaking of super groups, Them Crooked Vultures is really a fun rock album. I was impressed after being a bit weary from crap like Audioslave.

Otherwise I've been listening to a band called Hammock a fair bit lately. Instrumental music is sometimes good to draw to and other times it makes me want to go to sleep. Random other music includes doves' and elbow's latest albums and a bunch of hipster crap that isn't terribly worth mentioning.

The new Caribou album is currently blowing my mind. (For those who don't know, he used to go by the name Manitoba until he was forced into a name change by Handsome Dick Manitoba) I think the dude from Four Tet had something to do with this album too. I read that they were trying to make electronic music that sounded like it was made out of water - and it certainly does. Really densely layered - the kind of album where you'll hear something different every time.

I have to say I'm not so keen on most new music, and I haven't been for years. For a brief period I used to keep up with all the new music, but the last year I remember being really great was 2002. Nothing much after that really grabbed me. It's quite sad, really - I hear about all these new bands that are supposed to be great and most of them just bore me to tears. So, I guess what I'm getting at is this: are there are any really unusual or unique bands in recent memory that are worth checking out? And PLEASE, for the love of god don't say "Animal Collective" - sorry. There's nothing wrong with AC, I just don't think they're AMAZING...and frankly I'm tired of hearing about them.
