It's a small world, and it gets me every time

Post by VeryCuddlyCornpone »

Long story short: I go on vacation, we stop at the store, I notice this really cute guy working there. Keep trying to talk to him and/or make witty banter without being a creeper- luckily I avoid the latter part but I also fail to converse. Mom keeps urging me to go back so I can ask him out for coffee or something (oh my mommy) but I give up and resign myself to the fact.

Come home, go on Facebook, on a lark type in his name into the search thing- turns out 1. Boy has a girlfriend :( 2. Boy goes to my school 3. Boy also works at the radio station there. I guess I just managed to avoid seeing him all the times I was there.

But wut da fuuuuuuuuuup what are the odds? I feel like this kind of thing has been happening more to me lately, just running into people I really don't expect to run into and finding weird connections to people. (Of course Facebook The Ultimate Stalker Hamburger Helper makes finding those connections easier but still)

Is the world shrinking? What happens when the landmasses become standing room only? Will it be a continental musical chairs? What do you win if you are the last person to fit on the planet?

A lifetime supply of Soylent Green.
Existence is a series of catastrophes through which everything barely but continually survives.

I think the world only shrinks if you actively participate in acts of Facebook Stalking. I mean, I'd be right there with you on you "wow, coincidence!" kick if you were hanging out in your school's cafeteria, and you saw the guy walk by. That's serendipity. What you did was reconnaissance.

When i was a grad student at the university of Kentucky one of the professors I was working for had just started out and he had just hired a lab manager, this ukranian woman. It was weird, cause both of us felt like we knew each other somehow, but we didn't go to the same church, didn't run in the same circles, it was strange. Then for some reason I started talking about my past. Turns out, we knew each other from Iowa. She used to work for my uncle in his restaurant (which I had also worked in)... 13 YEARS EARLIER. now that's a small world.

Someone I went to ROTC with is doing a special cadet internship thing with someone I knew from MY summer training at Ft. Lewis. Especially weird is that its in Germany.

The new BN's S-3 officer is the girlfriend of someone I went to Transportation School with.

The Major who ran the Transportation School, and the Colonel who ran the Brigade, were BOTH graduates of my university.

One of the people I worked with in college did a study abroad in England and roomed with a girl who was on my floor freshman year.

Jack Kirby (THE Jack Kirby) attended my synagogue back home.

I chalk it all up to the law of averages.

On a trip to Disney World a few years ago with my family, out of pure coincidence we ran into our next door neighbor's son.

Though I guess that isn't terribly surprising as at any given moment about 1/2 the population of the US is located inside Disney World.

Yeah, I suppose you're right. I'm just glad I didn't try to woo him at the store, or else I would have a lot of potentially uncomfortable months on the horizon.

I ran into a coworker once at SeaWorld in Orlando shortly after entering the park, over by the dolphin nursery. We had absolutely no prior knowledge of either of us going to Orlando. And for us, going to SeaWorld was a spontaneous decision for that day.

Well I did meet an aquaintance while I was on vacation, although it's probably likely that I would run into someone. I barely knew him before, but we hung out and now I know him a bit more I guess. Interesting thing is I knew a few folks that would be in the same city at that time, but somehow didn't run into any of them.

No, I'm still in Hobart. But that's in Tasmania, which is an Island that is part of Australia, which is also an island. ;)

There's at least eight, you shameless exaggerator.

....

Contrariwise, I was brought up in Launceston and used to consider Hobart to be a pretty big place.
