Hmm, a quick search shows me that I've only said I don't like him before anyway, not given the full spiel as to why. Maybe someday I will, and then you shall crumble before the mighty wisdom and logic of my words! CRUMBLE I SAY

Always glad to have Jim North validate my opinions by being so very wrong.
Reading a short story collection by Jhumpa Lahiri called Unaccustomed Earth right now. Most of the stories involve families split by distance, and it's basically solidifying my opinion that all love is doomed.

Want to restart "A Lion Among Men", the third book in the Wicked series. I've read "Wicked" and "Son of a Witch" and enjoyed them, granted they could have added a few more things into it. I like the different perspectives of the classic story of Oz overall. Rumor has it there will be a fourth book coming out told via Glenda's perspective.

I don't believe I've read Bunuel's and I thought I had most of the Cary Grant bios at this point.McDuffies wrote:Louis Bunuel's biography was the best of it's kind I've read. Re: A Book Thread
I saw Wicked at the Pantages in Hollywood, and I'll be honest: I loved the first act. I was NOT keen on the second act. Why, you may ask? Retcon. Maybe its the "perspective" of being told from a different POV, but it just came off as a retcon. Granted, it was a very good retcon, but I still noticed it. I'm curious to read the books, see how they compare. Sadly, right now I'm on a professional development kick so it's a lot of military history.Ekolter wrote:Want to restart "A Lion Among Men", the third book in the Wicked series. Speaking of bios, Colin Powell has a very fascinating one.

Re: A Book Thread
There's an idea. I used to have a first-edition copy of Wicked, which was sent as promotion to my student radio station way back when the book was first published. It was good. Never got around to reading any of Gregory Maguire's other books, and lost that copy of Wicked.Ekolter wrote:Want to restart "A Lion Among Men", the third book in the Wicked series. I'm also trying to find some good examples of illustrated novels, where the illustrations are integrated and complementary to text, but given that "illustrated novel" is interchangeable with "graphic novel" for certain folk who just don't want to be pigeonholed in their pompous descriptions of comics, it's proving difficult. Anyone got any leads?

Re-reading Stranger In a Strange Land for the eight hundred millionth time... it's been a while.
Re: A Book Thread
I've yet to read something from Lahiri that ends on a happy note. Just finished Interpreter of Maladies after reading The Namesake, and yes. Give up all hope now.Yeahduff wrote: Reading a short story collection by Jhumpa Lahiri called Unaccustomed Earth right now. On the same thread, just read The Brief, Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao. It's pretty great nerdy literature.

Re: A Book Thread
I don't know why, but Maguire's writing style makes me want to scoop out my eyes with a spoon so I never have to read anything by him again. I made it through Wicked, and halfway through Son of a Witch, and came out of it wishing I had my time back so I could do something enjoyable like dancing with a starving grizzly bear while wearing a suit made of honey and fish.Ekolter wrote:Want to restart "A Lion Among Men", the third book in the Wicked series. We saw the musical in Chicago summer before last, and it was pretty spifty. I enjoyed it. Wife's obsessed...she's got a little Wicked shrine in her office, complete with witch hat.
Re: A Book Thread
On my quest to read all 6 Jane Austen novels(some quest eh?) Much later in life than 90% of every other female I've met(seriously was this required reading for some in highschool, why did I not read these till now or ever be told how awesome they were?) I am currently reading Emma (finished Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, and Persuasion). Until I've finished these last three I can't bring myself to buy something new just to have it sit on my shelf.

We're down to only ten boxes of books...not counting what's not packed. TC has one entire bookshelf dedicated just for his books. I got reading material. Just getting the time to read is another thing.

Re: A Book Thread
Thoroughly recommending XDM - X-Treme Dungeon Mastery by Tracy & Curtis Hickman. It's an awesome book for those geeky enough to like role-playing (which I am). It also helps that it is illustrated by Howard Tayler.
I'm also reading the Vorksigan series byLois McMaster Bujold. Problem is, since the books are mostly out of print, I'm having to pick them up in an ad-hoc fashion second hand and I'm reading the series out of order...

Re: A Book Thread
I finished Emma a few days ago and am currently working my way through watching any film adaptations I can get my hands on before I move on to the Mansfield Park (No spoilers Phact ;P )
After I finish the Austen novels I'm thinking about reading Secret Garden and Little Princess. As mentioned before working my way through all the books people seemed to have had as required reading and apparently I didn't... Fear the Louisiana School System.
