Webcomic Hosts - know any? (Not Spam)

Post by Dr Neo Lao »

Seriously, this isn't spam, nor am I advertising other competing services. Just check my post count and where I've been posting to get an idea of what I'm about.

Okay, on to the actual question: do you know of any sites that a random person can just rock up to, fill in a form and have their own webcomic on the internet?

So far, I have discovered seven:
  • Comic Genesis
  • DrunkDuck
  • ComicSpace
  • SmackJeeves
  • ComicFury
  • WebComicsNation
  • ComicDish
The reason for me asking will become more apparent later, however any assistance will be appreciated. Those seven I think cover almost all available webcomic-specific hosts (as opposed to generic free hosts like Geocities). I could have sworn there were more than seven though.

Note also that I'm not looking for places like RampageNetwork or Xepher (where you make a submission which is looked at and has to be deemed "good enough" to be accepted), but for places that allow almost anyone to join.

I don't expect anyone would have accused you of spamming. Unfortunately, your list covers my own knowledge of comic-specific free-for-all hosts, so I cannot help.

:D Thanks.

I spent a few hours searching and was surprised at how few there were. Of the seven listed, the only ones that I didn't previously know about where Comic Dish and Comic Fury.Almost everyone is on one of the big three (CG, DD or SJ) or on something under the banner of "own hosting" (with the majority being on free blogging sites or using a regular free host/paid host). There are a small few who are in small collectives (like EyeScream) but those are by far a minority.

Yeah, you covered all I know.
7 is a lot. Usually I knew of three or four.

Here's one more... the only Comicpress free webcomic host that I know of!

You beat me to it. I'm going to try out webcomic planet for my new comic. Two reasons:
1) it will force me to learn CSS, which I have been putting off
2) all kinds of ads are allowed.

You can use CSS on ComicGenesis too... but yeah, I know what you mean.

you could give xepher.net a go, but they're fairly choosy, and you're pretty much on your own as far as comic loaders are concerned.

SpiderForest is a free host, but it's not an "anyone can just fill out a form and join" thing, so I don't know if it counts. There's that whole admissions process.

good point. I've never checked the criteria, so I wouldn't know the conditions for joining.

But I have to say there sure are more hosts now than they used to be. I remember a time when Keenspace used to be the only free comic host out there.

Cornstalker isn't a host, just a collective of comics that are hosted on various places. That is, unless something largely changed since I was there the last time.

Correct. I was mainly looking for places where someone can just rock up, fill in a form and get hosting for their webcomic.

There are a slew of comic collectives that offer hosting and forums and advertising and such, but most of these collectives want you to already be hosted somewhere (so they can look at your work) and make a detailed submission which is compared to all the other submissions - then only the one they like the best is accepted. It's a pretty good deal and it makes sure that all the comics they have are of decent calibre, but they are not what I was looking for.

Thanks everyone for your input. :D

Another trend I'm noticing is a lot of people like to host their own sites now. Apparently things like Comicpress make it a lot easier than it used to be.

I got an account on Webcomplanet. I like the options but there are some issues with the FAQs and tutorials not reflecting the actual workings of the site! Get ready to experiment on this one.
