Hi, folks. Dan Forcey here from Platinum Studios. Kisai said it was OK to share some info with everyone here about our yearly contest, The Comic Book Challenge. If you haven't heard of the Challenge (and there's really no reason to assume you have, as we've only been doing it for two years now), it's a contest we do where you can submit a story idea and three pages of art over at http://www.comicbookchallenge.com. We choose 50 Top Entries to come to San Diego Comicon and pitch their ideas to a panel of judges. The top ten chosen by the judges are then posted online and the public votes for the winner. The winner gets a publishing contract from Platinum and is paid to produce their book and, last year, the runners-up got some pretty cool stuff, too (we haven't announced this year's prize package yet, but I can assure you, it's some pretty cool stuff). The 2006 winner was DJ Coffman's Hero By Night (http://www.herobynight.com) and the 2007 winner was Jorge Vega's Gunplay (http://www.whodiestoday.com) which just came out in bookstores a few weeks ago. The only requirement for entries is that it hasn't appeared in print before, so it's a great venue for webcomic artists that might want to work in the print medium, too. I'll be around here if anybody has questions (I'm a pretty consistant lurket on these forums anyway), so check it out and if you have any questions, feel free to ask. Submissions opened on May 1 and run through May 31. Thanks, everybody, for even considering it.
Cheers,
Dan Forcey

I'm a big fan of HBN. Good luck to anyone who enters^^ I don't have the patience or experience to produce serial work for print, but I'll be sure to vote.

Sounds great!
Now, if I only had a comic that was worth publishing...

Not sure I've ever been called alluring before.
For those of you who don't think you've got something that could win, don't sell yourself short. You should see some of DJ's stuff before Hero By Night. It was totally different and (although still quite awesome) a lot...simpler. (Hope DJ doesn't read that and take it the wrong way or I'll be in big trouble.)

I hope you do. It's not the perfect path for everybody, but it's a great opportunity if you are looking to get a book printed and get some exposure. Hero By Night was an idea DJ had "on the back shelf" while he worked on his main interest, Yirmumah. He still does that one as he's working on HBN, too.

Re: The Comic Book Challenge
Hey, folks. Sorry about the double post but I thought this might be interesting to some of you:
"Platinum Studios, Inc. announced today exciting changes to its annual contest, The Comic Book Challenge, which will transform it into a fully digital competition. In previous years, the Top 50 entrants had to make their way to San Diego, CA during one of the busiest and most expensive times of the year in order to pitch their concept live to a panel of judges. Now, from the convenience of their own home, each Top 50 entrant will be able to create a four-minute video pitch which he/she will submit online for judging. The panel of celebrity judges will then review the video pitch and original entry of each Top 50 entrant and choose the Top 10 entrants based on these submissions. The Top 50 entrants will be given one full month to create their own, unique video pitch.
“Even with the travel stipend we offered last year, a lot of the Top 50 had to pay out of pocket just to make it to the pitch, including some contestants coming from as far way as India and Australia, and I believe that may have discouraged some folks from entering,” said Dan Forcey, VP of Content Development at Platinum Studios. “We wanted to include as many aspiring comic book creators from as many places as possible so we decided to make participation even easier in order to continue growing The Comic Book Challenge into the international sensation we believe it is becoming.”
As part of these changes, Platinum has decided to extend its May 31st deadline to June 14th and public voting on the Top 10 will be similarly adjusted.
Visit http://www.comicbookchallenge.com for further details on the contest."
Hopefully, that'll make it a little easier for some folks to enter. Thanks, everyone.
