Immortality in Webcomics?
For a crossover event I'm going to do, it would help if I knew the answer to a question---is there any webcomic you're aware of where people achieve immortality---not born with it, like some view elves or gods, but take a treatment, potion, what-have-you to BECOME immortal? Thanks in advance!---Al

The only one that springs to mind is one that I read a while back that was about some middle-aged guys that had become 'gods' and lived on the moon.
It was dreadfully dull, I'll see if I can find it...
Edit: Couldn't find it - it may not be on-line any more.
Schlock Mercenary has the current storyline dealing with making humans effectively immortal, but I don't think that's what you're after (and it's still in progress).
DMFA has a long-running storyline about Dan coming to terms with being a succubus, but that's not quite it either.
Vreakerz had a long-runing storyline that was pretty much what you wanted, but from around mid 2006 it was revealed that the main character was like that all along (or at least knew about it before the start of the story).
'Nother edit: Ha! Found one - Charby the Vampirate (half vampire, half pirate... or something). The art and storyline are all over the place, but the first couple of issues (new replacements for the originals) and some of the later stuff sorta make sense...
One more: Duh! How could I have forgotten Zebra Girl! It's almost exactly what you were asking for. Except that the protagonist was not trying to become immortal, she was turned into a demon when a spell book was slammed shut. But there is a lot of angsty drama. (And as a bonus, I just found out it's off hiatus, so I'm off to read what I'd missed out on... )

Do the reapers count? The reapers Dee, Shishi, and the very rarely appearing Enforcer Reaper: Luin are individuals whom have died, but due to having too many attachments to the earth, are unable to move on to the afterlife, making them prime candidates for being messengers between the worlds.
While technically reapers are ghosts they can become solid and interact as normal individuals.
THere's another more directly immortal character, but I can't really reveal it yet, since it would be a massive spoiler, so I guess it's no good for that.
There is a side character with a sort of reduced mortality, being Hermes the first, whom was once a superhero "Speedster" who's aging process has been decelerated. This aspect of his character though is only covered in his cast page bio, and isn't in the comic its self.

This exactly applies to my other comic, well kind of, they didn't do it on purpose. Though unfortunately, there's nothing to see. It was hiatused a couple years ago, and the immortal characters in question hadn't even shown up yet. So I guess that's not really very helpful at all. Though if you're curious, it's here: http://quuren.comicgen.com The immortal characters are there on the main page even.
I'm working on the story currently, and it will revive at some point, starting over completely. Probably focusing entirely on the immortal characters. The Imari.
In my story, the world was once abundant with magic, which is speculated to have fallen from the sky originally. The magic was everywhere, creating magical creatures and things, unicorns, dragons, fairies. None relating to humans though, since they were less susesptible to it. Except that there were a number of pockets in hidden places, where the magic was especially dense, and a number of humans wandered into them, lost or exploring, and they were overcome by the vast amounts of magic, taking it all into themselves. They fell into comas, not waking up for many years. 20-200. And thereafter they found themselves to be immortal and possessing incredible magic powers, which took literally ages to figure out how to control.
In other news, vampires and things will probably be your best bet. Or in Sorcery 101, the main character is immortal because he became blood bond to a vampire. So will live as long as the vampire does.

This made me think of Black Tapestries, where in the first couple of chapters the main character not only gets turned into a werefox, but has her soul broken by the villain so that she can't die, no matter how badly her body is mutilated (less than SFW.)

well in my comics "world" a "andriod" can not exsist forever as this would cause problems , with humans seeing them as competing - so each andriod is a allowed a "time-span" depending on there function and importanceRisky wrote:Is that something that is achieved in your comic, or are your AIs born that way?datachasers wrote:what about Andriods / AIS / AI systems , they are immortal , as long as you have parts and maintain them -
barring catastrophic damage - ( if a andriod loses all power without certain conditions being met the brain formats itself ) ie it requires a certain amount of current ( 0.000023nv ) or above to sustain memory and inteligence )
AIS systems differ in they are more like standard computers - they can survive a power off only losing a small portion of memory ( much like ram being dumped when you kill power to a computer ) some AISs would require longer to come back up to speed after a full shut down ( thats why its never done ) also some damage could occur at the time of shut down
- AIS's ( Artifical Inteligence Systems ) do not have a limit so they are pretty much eternal -
but for a andriod that would be more deeds earn more lifespan .. kinda strange i guess -
( sorry for the long post )

Foxfire has a method of immortality, buuuut it tends to be rather finnicky and invokes a cost.. basic process involves
1) soul orb crafted by the finest of Thae'lith Artificers.
2) one or more Thae'lith of "Prelate" class to trap Soul in said orb.
3) person of sufficient mental prowess can remain aware in the orb, choosing to "hibernate" if need be.
4) Thae'lith prelate, and several other living beings for the process of resurrection.. requires a bit of a live sacrifice.
5) shower, change of clothes, for the person who was just resurrected, born anew...
6) a team to clean up the mess..

whoever thought resurrections would be a joyous occasion filled with light and hope are sorely mistaken.. of course immortality is achieved only if one plays their cards right.

The Foxfire way sounds almost like the magical equivelent of how Dr. Who regenerates...
Thanks, everyone! A.I.'s are not exactly what I was aiming for, but I wanted to hear all methods. Thanks!---Al

If you're still interested, the main character of my story (not a webcomic, but this is more writing oriented and not art oriented) is immortal.
He interacted with an experimental portal that opened to a different dimension, one with different laws of physics and a creature from that world attempted to crossover. It was unable to exist in its form (think like a gelatinous Venom symbiote) as the nature of our universe just could not sustain it, and attempted to inhabit the main character's body. In the process, it began rewiring his genetic code to make him a more suitable host. One of the things altered was the aging process, halting it so he wouldn't grow old and die.
He doesn't have "enhanced healing factor" like Wolverine from the X-Men, but unless mortally wounded (or if kept alive artificially) then his body will eventually fix whatever wounds he suffers to the original state with at best a small scar. This is provided nothing gets lopped off, ie. he can not regrow limbs but minor organ damage can be repaired given time, muscles will heal and repair, tendons can reattach, etc.
He also as a result doesn't leave certain forms of DNA evidence behind such as skin cells and hair unless forcibly removed. Nothing is dying, so nothing falls off.
A final change is his brain and capacity for learning, which continues to grow over time as he applies himself. This doesn't mean he reaches genius levels of intelligence, simply that he can remember things from his early life as well as his recent life, something that can at times be difficult to sort out.
That's about all I've got, if you need more info then drop me a PM.
