If you didn't give him your address, you're probably not getting one in the mail.

Pastimes. It used to be in downtown Glenview, but moved to Niles briefly. I thought it closed but it moved across the street by the Toy's 'R Us. Doesn't even have a sign over the shop.Col wrote:What store was that?theSuburbanLetdown wrote:I actually maganed to procure a few copies of the book, seeing as how the comic shop by my house didn't close, it just moved. The shop guy also let me take more than one after I proved to him I was in the book.
Huh, well that's cool. Keith's Komix in Schaumburg was the only store I could find that had it. All the others I called weren't carrying it. Didn't try any out by you though, admittedly.theSuburbanLetdown wrote:Pastimes. It used to be in downtown Glenview, but moved to Niles briefly. Saturday was my regular comic pickup day, but we almost didn't make it; I had to beg and plead to make sure we got in just so I could pick up a copy of the ComicGenesis issue. Everyone involved did a great job, I thought.
The reviews I've seen - not just about the ComicGenesis sampler, but about all the comics for FCBD - seem to fall into two main categories:
- Have a complete, standalone story, and
- Don't do reprints.
It seems like, if the ComicGenesis team wants to be "taken seriously", you should look into putting together a crossover next year. Chose a certain group of characters, come up with a short but entertaining story for them, and then have CG's best artists each do a few pages. Cameos aplenty as possible, and a key on the last couple of pages pointing out where the characters come from.
Obviously, the main problem is deciding which characters, who'll do scripting duties, who'll do art duties, etc. And maybe you'd want to have a price tag attached, since whoevers characters are "front and center" and whoever does art duties will definately get major billing there.
But it would certainly kick the legs out from under Mr. Snooty Critic and his "Blah blah I will complain about a comic not being good enough because it's a collection rather than a whole story."

The comic is only free to the customer. The comic still has to be published and shipped out. In fact, one of the complaints I saw was the fact that ComicGenesis was the most expensive comic for the retailer - the other comic publishers were able to reduce their price to about 25 cents per copy, while ComicGenesis ran about 55 cents each.ryclaude wrote:having a price would kinda defeat the purpose of FREE comic book day.
Got my comics in the mail. Very nice of them to send several copies to us.
I think a crossover would be a horrible idea. Completely defeats the purpose since the characters have nothing to do with each other in their actual comics, and each comic has it's own genre, theme, and tone about it. That's the point of having samples in this instead of one continuous issue. People want more of a story? Go to the websites. You'll get way more story out of most of those comics than any of the issues released on FCBD.

Fair enough. Like I said, for what it was intended to be, it was very well put together.
The problem is that there were reviews mentioned in this thread, and some people clearly felt those reviews cast the comic in a bad light. All I was trying to point out was that, if you take the critiques about the CG comic seriously, that's what the reviewers are "recommending". Not just about your work, but about most of the free comics.

A very carefully planned out crossover could work - a story where the characters selected got to act well in the personas they have in their home comics. But a carefully planned out crossover would be a nightmare to produce.
The $0.55 per comic to the store might be reflected in the cost that KeenSpot Entertainment had to bear - They covered just somewhat over half the cost of the book. I doubt the Free Comic Book Day comic with the Simpsons and Futurama in it had any difficulty raising the funds for the comic. Probably just came out of the advertising budget.
Honestly, I don't CARE what the bloggers had to say about it - the more they pan the CG FCBD comic, the more advertising the CG FCBD comic gets. Besides, the bloggers are blogging after the comic's been out there - people have already read it and formed their own opinions.

it should also be noted that those of you who managed to get your hands on the CG FCBD book, that is the only place we're ever going to publish that particular Shenanigan comic, so treasure it.
