Any other artistic skills?

Any other artistic skills?

Post by Redtech »

Just a thought that came to mind, apologies if this has been done to death before:

Would you call yourself a one-trick pony when it comes to art, or do you have other creative talents?

Do your skills help your artistic work in regards to your comic?

I'm thinking more "creative arts" like drama, music, dance then natural aptitudes like being a whizz at Javascript etc.

I'll start the ball rolling. I am not a gifted actor, but I'm a very talented body actor, I can impersonate, pose and exaggerate and I did use to go to drama school for a few years, I've never really thought about it, until my boss commented on how I do the "Charlie Chaplin" when carrying heavy objects!

And in my comic it helps because although I'm still at the "LEARN F-ING ANATOMY" stage, having a feel for a pose, the weight, the motion is improtant for making positions feel realistic. If I can't do a pose, my chars sure as hell ain't going to be able to do it! A full length mirror helps.

Well, since I'm sitting here sulking and avoiding getting dinner, even though I'm really, really hungry, I may as well respond.

I write. All the time. Not writing makes me twitchy and irritable. I also play every musical instrument known to humankind, including the accordion. I am not sure that this latter skill helps me with cartooning, but it's true that if I ever need to draw an accordion, I'll know where the buttons go.

Hell, I'm not even that good at the (already a cop-out) artistic style I use now. Really, the only thing I'd say I'm good at artistically is a good sense of comedic timing.

I can play a few instruments, but it doesn't help much with the comics.

Wow, that's a good question. I can write, and I've been writing stories and RPGing with my friends for quite some time. I used to do cartoons a while ago...but if you're referring to artistic skills rather than writing and drawing, yeah, I don't think I have any. <.< Though I can artistically shatter a window in eight different directions by singing along to music.

Well, as for music, I can read music, can't play it or sing. As for a usefull skill, there's the graphical arts abilities which have helped in my photoshopping of my toons. Not to mention I have a really good ability at organizational structure. Not sure how cabinetry or mechanical skills would fit into this...

I don't have any artistic skills. I only make comics because I'm too lazy to train a monkey to do it for me.

Playing guitar, mostly. Origami, if you count that in art. I had my hand in directing, but it's not determined whether I had any skills.

I'm pretty good at miniatures painting, a hobby even geekier than drawing webcomics.

I make videos with a local independant studios (music videos for local bands, ads for tv stations, training videos for companies, that sort of thing), I make stop-motion animation films using plastic Lego men, I can carve wood, weld metal into interesting shapes that it wasn't originally intended to be (is that artistic or just bad welding?), I "play" the drums, I dj for my local youth and church groups (cd's, not vinyl) and I drive trucks (that should be considered an art form, especially with the traffic around here).

But I'm not really good at any of those things, or drawing...

Hm. I would say mainly art, but I am very down on my own stuff thanks to a high-school art teacher bashing it constantly. I did study fashion design, and journalism, and work as a typesetter/graphic designer (very low end basic stuff though).

I can sing (though I won't - no no no) and can act a bit.

My other great talent is creative cursing, but I'm not sure that helps me as a writer or an artist. :-?

I play clarinet and tenor saxophone, though not to anywhere near a professional level of competance. And I like to think I can sing, though I think that's more for the listener to decide.

I think I'm a good actor, and I have been told I have quite a talent for making faces.

I got into comics because I'm a decent writer and a decent artist, but I'm not great at either, so it makes sense to offer them as a package deal.

I... uh... also do some vocal impressions.
