I use both, as a strange holdover from when I was actually managing to update daily (grayscale weekdays, color Sundays)
Grayscale is faster. That's why I do it most of the time. I periodically make color strips, trying to some degree to put important plot moments in color, because color is prettier. I believe that periodic color is enough to help the reader imagine the rest of the strips in color.

"Bring out the gimp."
The GIMP is what I use. If nothing else, it'll let you save your black and white images as compressed PNGs and get the filesize way down.
I use colour to add some 'oomph' to what is otherwise, I'll freely admit, rather mediocre lineart. Also, I like the added conceptual freedom that colour gives you for highlighting little details.
Maybe if I start trying for a tri-weekly update schedule I'll switch to greyscale. But, to be honest, I find colouring quite quick and easy to do in my style. Of course, I don't shade anymore. And maybe that's more a comment on my (lack of) competance at coluring than anything else.

B&w for me, since I'm one of those apparent loosers who draws in a anime-isq fashion. As such, I try to emulate the style, which means in black and white with only chapter covers/special pages being coloured.
Though, it's also because in b&w I can get away with alot more in regards to neglecting backgrounds then I could if I coloured, also my update schedule has me cramped for time, so trying to colour, then shade, then highlight all the various pages would be very time consuming.
*shugs* Not to mention, if it was coloured it would detract from the emotions I try to convey via the characters expressions. But that's just my two cents.

All hail the GIMP.Cope wrote:The GIMP is what I use. If nothing else, it'll let you save your black and white images as compressed PNGs and get the filesize way down.
"VOOM!" is what a space dreadnought's main cannon should sound like.

Colour... because with my comic, there isn't much to look at, so might as well make it colour.
Also, colour is the only thing that allows me to make new puppets. If I used grayscale/B&W, it would look strange.

I prefere black/white comics, I find that there's little more impressive things than black/white contrast. Also, colour hides the line and inking quality, which is to me one of basic elements of comics. I like economy, so achieving something with simple lines instead of with colours and tones, for me is a plus.
This is, of course, if artist is actually a good inker.
I do my comics mostly in black and white. I'm not a very good colourist, but that's not the reason. Rather, it's backward: because of my love of black/white expression, I never really put effort to learn colour, instead I rather concentrate on learning various black/white techniques.
I contemplated colouring my current comics, but realised that they aren't a very good ground for colouring. They are made with very little space left for colour, and they wouldn't add anything significant to them.

Actually, after chapter 2, I've been using digital screens for my b/w pages, but I always think of them as b-w/greyscale because, after compression, they look like a textured grey to me (and I'm working in the greyscale space and printing as b/w orders).VinnieD wrote:I suppose I left out a category though.
