Has anyone ever commented on your "style" or art?

I'm sure they have, but someone told me my art style was "outdated". Wha? I don't understand. How can ANY art style, outside of caveman drawings and possibly heiroglyphics be outdated?

Are you kidding? We have an entire thread partially dedicated to commenting on someone's style. If you're an artist, it's gonna happen. It's inevitable. I say get used to it, or never draw around other people.

I think style is a word thrown around loosely nowadays, but whatever. From what I have learned, style is the kind of art that most complements the storytelling. So, in that case, I'm still developing mine.

People tell me they can recognize when I've drawn something. That's about as close as it'll get.

I'm also somewhat sure someones going to be asking you why you keep making these quiz topics soon. :p

it happens alot in the art world and style can be a really loose term, esspecially when speaking of someones "art style."

I oddest comment I've gotten was I was out drawing at a park I believe and someone came up behind me and stared at my art pad for awhile then said "you have a really weird style" lol....

Gotten a bunch of "Thank you for not drawing anime" and then some comments by my professors that is stuff like my people have flat football eyes and I should work on making them a bit more realistic. And a person from Darkhorse said my inking style was a bit jarring and I should fiddle with it. But the I'm glad it's not anime and more American thing is the only comment from fans. So I guess being inspired by Andy Kurbert's art has served me well.

I tend to get stuff along the lines of "I don't usually like manga, but I'm ok with yours," or that it has a touch of American influence which makes it more unique than most manga.

Outdated is an odd term to use for style, especially with webcomics.
If it works with the story, it's reasonably attractive and fairly unique, I wouldn't worry about what other people say about it.

Critiques like that are good to just keep in mind and think about, without necessarily implementing a big change if you don't really agree.

I've gotten such fluctuating reviews about style that I kinda have no idea what it means. I've been called anime (*coughnotanimatedthankscough*) manga, american and, well, "odd," I've been told color choice is great and color choice sucks...and many other contradictory things. Then I decided since I don't ever desire to make a career out of art I didn't really care, and would do it the way I pleased.

Styles can't be outdated IMO, they can only be reminiscent of a past popular era. For example, a decade or so from now, manga will be considered outdated. The style may still be in use, it just won't be what all the kiddies will be trying to draw and make webcomics with. Eh. I've decided that won't be such a bad time then, heh.

I get stylistic remarks all the time. I usually don't realize I have a particular way of styling something until someone points it out.

It's nice, though, to always be developping your style in a community of artists. That way, you can get critiques and feedback about changes. If all else fails, you can leech off of them.

People tend to like my style, I've recieved stuff like it's unique, and theres an underlying geometric thing which they think is cool.

I think it was Levi-chan who called my style "French~y-cum-Japanese"... Other than that, people kind of say "Keff has a style!", but I don't quite know what it is.

I get a lot of of comments on style, but thats mostly because I change it from week to week and people complain about the new style.

The only thing anyone has ever said about mine was shortly after the comic started. They said the eyes were weird...and they were right. I still haven't figured out the best way to do them, but with the way I have now I can do a lot more expression than I used to!

Not many people seem to like the way I draw eyes, but enough do to convince me to stick with them.

I actually have a variety of eye styles, usually differeing for close-ups or from farther away. More often, younger people have only the white and color, older have a white iris within the color, and I'll go just white and the color sometimes for older if they're supposed to seem a little inhuman. Close-ups tend to have my rather simplistic mimickry of what I call "Sailor Moon eyes" that feature these little white curved bars within the colored section.

Well once someone said junkRIOT was full of melty faced mongoloids, but my style hasn't much been CALLED anything, but I've never had it related to anything else.

Most of my extended family, upon seeing my art, ways, "Oh, this is like that.....Japanese.....stuff? Y'know....like pokemon..."

Anyway, while a large segment of my style has been m4nga influenced in the past, I'm staring to move back to a more westernized look as of late, with larger noses, smaller eyes, actual chins, ect.

Does that stop the comparisons? 'Course not.

Yeah, I've come to terms with my anime roots. I draw anime because I think it's pretty, and that's that. I'm not going to draw anime just because it's popular... and I'm not going to stop drawing anime just because it's popular, either. If some people look down on me because of it, I don't care. It's how I like to draw.

I've drawn a lot of stuff in a lot of styles over the time I've been drawing, and the one thing I seem to get from people who've been seeing my stuff through all that time is that they can recognize what I've drawn, though they've never been able to fully quantify what it is about it that makes it recognizable.

As for my current project, yes, it's manga style, yes, a lot of people draw that way, no, I'm not going to change it just because everyone and their dog thinks it's the way to draw. I picked manga for this project because it felt like the best stylistic fit. I've also done furry comics, realistic ones, Disney-esque stuff, and even this weird thing where one of the characters looked like (and essentially was) a stoned muppet with no mouth. And on all of them I felt like the style of art fit the style of the story. (And yet, even through all that stuff, people could tell what was mine. I still can't figure it out...)
